Mothing
There
are six permanent sites with, up to nine, moth traps operating within the area.
Between them, they have caught some of the rarest species to occur in the UK.
Our yearly species tally is matched only by Dungeness within Kent.
We
are always looking for new opportunities to expand our species lists, so are
quite happy to take generators and mobile traps to other local sites. Not only
does this add to our own enjoyment, but also helps fill in gaps for the Kent
Branch of the Butterfly Conservation Society (Moth Section) data base. We
regularly trap in the mixed woodlands around Canterbury and along the coastal
strip between Pegwell Bay and Kingsdown, to the south of us. Any visitors to
Steve Nash’s excellent Migrant moth
web site will have noticed how prolific
the Thanet area is.
