Wednesday 26th January 2005 Ash Levels

A nice array of mammals on display around the Ash Levels today. A magnificent adult Fox was watched hunting the reedy fringes of a field near the Power Station and I counted a total of 7 Brown Hares as I made my way around the various water meadows and set-a-sides that make up the bulk of the area. Plenty of Rabbits in the Orchards as I made my way towards Ash and off of the marsh. (Dylan)

Wednesday 26th January 2005 North Foreland

A few plants still flowering at North Foreland in addition to the ubiquitous Common Daisy, I noticed as I cycled by; Wild Carrot, Bristly Ox-tongue, Ox-eye Daisy, Oxford Ragwort and a very unseasonal Lesser Broomrape.  (F Solly)

Monday 17th January 2005 Elvington

Sitting at the bar of the club (Elvington) a Red Admiral flew along the bottle and rested on one of the optics. (TRP)

Wednesday 12th January 2005 Lydden HR Dover

Took this at Lydden this afternoon, Highland Cow eating berries. A bit of interest, as I was walking on Lower Road, Temple Ewell at 13.10, a Noctule Bat was about 60-70 feet up feeding frantically, It stood out so well against the blue sky and the sun shining on it, was able to follow it for about a minute. It should be in hibernation, but with the lovely spring weather must have thought it spring. Pretty certain that this in Common Ragwort which was flowering up on the downs at Lydden NR, flowering season should be June to November, tell you, the seasons have gone mad!! (Graham Crick)

Wednesday 5th January 2005 Larkey Valley Wood

Spurge Laurel and Hazel catkins in flower. Several Spindle bushes still with their coral-coloured seed cases, Guelder Rose still with plenty of berries and a single White Bryony with numerous berries – although the remainder of the plant was withered and beyond recognition. A couple of patches of Candle Snuff Fungus and the bracket fungi Coriolus versicolor   (F Solly)

Tuesday 4th January 2005 Common Seal Ramsgate Harbour

The guys in the Harbour Office told me that there had been a Common Seal in the Outer Harbour yesterday afternoon (3rd Jan) and I saw a Buff-tailed Bumblebee flying around some ivy along West Dumpton Lane at midday. Crazy weather, maybe it's worth running the moth trap? (Dylan)

Monday 3rd January 2005 Port entrance Ramsgate

There was a Brown Rat feeding along the tide line next to the Port entrance at 11.00 hrs. This behaviour was completely new to me leaving me to wonder if, in fact, it was actually Peter Petegrew? (Harry Potter joke for all you non-believers!) (Dylan)
