Monday 28th February 2005 Broadstairs to Ramsgate Harbour

Hopefully today's news is not that significant. I walked along the coast from Broadstairs to Ramsgate Harbour. Apart from the bizarre experience of watching a Buff-tailed Bumble-bee flying in the snow showers, it was the spectacle of thousands of dead and dying crabs (mainly Velvet Swimming Crabs, I think?) washed up along the shoreline that provided a bit of mystery. Knowing the state of the moon these could be post breeding fatalities otherwise they are a result of a far more worrying pollution incident. Naomi, at The Thanet Coastal Project, has been notified and we will post news of her findings when we receive them. Samples are to be sent away for post mortem examinations. (Dylan)

Monday 28th February 2005 Northdown Park & Mocketts Wood

Cow Parsley in flower Northdown Park Margate, Butcher’s Broom in Mocketts wood St Peters Broadstairs. Ivy-leaved Toadflax in flower on a number of walls across Thanet, together with Hairy Bittercress (the latter also in gardens/cracks in pavements etc). Common garden ‘weeds’ such as Red Dead-nettle, Groundsel, Chickweed, Annual Mercury and Dandelion can all readily be found. Thanet’s rather impoverished Fern flora is well represented at a few locations, with Hart’s Tongue, Black Spleenwort, Intermediate Polybody and Wall Rue (easy to overlook if not familiar with this species as rather un-fern like) growing on a number of walls.  (F Solly)

Monday 14th February 2005 Foreness Point

The only positive to come from today's visit to Foreness Point was the opportunity to watch a Weasel hunting the cliff-top besides the pumping station. (Dylan)

Friday 11th February 2005 North Foreland

I came across several nice clusters of Sweet Violet (Viola odorata) along the clifftop at North Foreland this morning. (Dylan)

Friday 11th February 2005 Late News

Thursday 10th February 2005 Late News Common Frog

Wile walking to the pub for a pool match, there was a Common Frog which i nearly stood on the footpath along St Luke’s Avenue Ramsgate, so i picked it up and put it on the nearby lawn. (Craig S)

Thursday 10th February 2005 King George VI Park

Hart's Tongue Fern (Phyllitis scolopendrium) - growing in the wall by the main entrance to King George VI Park, beyond the tennis courts in Montefiore Avenue. (Dylan)

Thursday 10th February 2005 Dumpton Garden Thanet

Sitting in the lounge having lunch today we observed a Wood  Mouse feeding on bird seed and peanuts under the bird feeding station in the log pile, I will try and get a photo of this fellow over the weekend. (Gadget

Wednesday 2nd February 2005 River Stour

I did go round to have a look at the River Stour behind Pfizer Sports Ground. There was a party of 9 Common Seals (3 male & 6 female) hauled out on the mud looking towards the river mouth. I was able to get within 150m of them without any signs of disturbance, in fact I had to clap my hands to make them wake up long enough to get the picture!(Dylan)
