Monday 22 August 2011 Restharrow & Grove / Stodmarsh NNR
A single Fox was
on Restharrow at 5.30 this morning and at Stodmarsh I watched as 2 Field
Mice bounced their way down the track towards me and disappearing into
the undergrowth just inches away. Then a minute or so later there was a
Stoat no far from where I’d first seen the two mice. Not many
Dragonflies were about but I did see 2 Migrant Hawkers, 1 Common
Darter and a Brown Hawker. (Martyn Wilson)

Thursday 18th August 2011
Minster Thanet
Are there any spider experts out there? I was asked to look at this
spider that was in an outhouse. It looks a bit like an orb spider but it was
hanging upside down at the top of a window frame with no web, but just a
small amount of silk under it. The size of its body is about 1cm by 1cm, and
judging by the remains of insects below it. it had been there for some time.
The frame it was on was painted a pale cream which almost matched the body
colour.. Any ideas? (Don Wilks)
Thursday 11th August 2011 North Stream Marshside area
On Wednesday, I was told that some Brown Hawker dragonflies were on the
stream, so I drove over to see if I could get some pictures. When I arrived,
I scanned the stream seeing only one, which wasn't stopping, But I met 2
others, also taking pictures of another insect. On enquiring I found that a
number of Willow Emerald Damsels were present in the bushes, this is
a new species to me so I had to have some pictures, hope you like them. As
for the Brown Hawker, the clouds rolled in and the wind got up, then it
poured down, putting paid to the seeing any dragons, but I'll settle for the
little damsels. (Roly Wells-Colyer)
Tuesday 9th August 2011 Ham & Worth Marshes
I did my bit for KWT this morning and decided to see what Butterflies
and Dragonflies were flying around the marshes. Following the North & South
streams from the Coach & Horses, I immediately noticed the lack of dragons,
seeing only Common & Ruddy Darter with the odd female Emperor.
There seems to be a poor return of Migrant Hawkers this year having only
seen 1 or 2 so far this month. On the butterfly front, there were lots,
albeit common species, Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, Common Blue, Green
Veined White, Small & Large White, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock, Red Admiral
,Small & Large Skipper. Great to be out again.

Friday
5th August 2011 Kingsgate
Thanks to a recent
posting by Dylan and an old one by Francis, I was pleased to locate about
600 spikes of Ivy Broomrape opposite Kingsgate Castle and on the
clifftop. This is likely to be the only colony in East Kent. (Steve Coates)
Sunday
31st July 2011 Grove Ferry / Stodmarsh
Not a
lot of non-avian at the moment but we did see 3 or 4 Common Darters,
an Emperor Dragonfly and there were at least 20 Small Red-eyed
Damselflies from the Feast Hide. (Martyn Wilson)
