Sunday 31st August 2008 Kingsdown
I watched a rather tatty Swallowtail Butterfly
on the clifftop, behind the Kingsdown Golf Club carpark. Only seen for a
minute or so before it was lost as it headed south and I scrambled to get my
camera out of my back pack! (Dylan)

Friday 22nd August 2008 Garden Ash
Working in my studio at mid-day I could not ignore a loud and persistent
buzzing from behind the curtain. Expecting to evict an indignant bumble bee,
I was delighted to find a large female Hornet (Vesper crabro) She was
escorted to safety with due deference and without incident (Norman Mc)

Large White Butterfly Caterpillars are all over
the Brussels in our vegetables patch in the garden, a quick count lunch time
reviled 137 Caterpillars can't see many Brussels surviving this year. (Gadget)
Saturday 16th August 2008 Kingsgate Area
The first Autumn Ladies Tresses have just
started flowering at Kingsgate - who needs flashy tropical Orchids when you
have something as smart as ALT?! Ivy Broomrape continues to increase
and there are still a few grotty specimens in flower and Longleaf is
still flowering. Other than that not much other than Small and Common
Scabious, Black Knapweed, Dwarf Thistle and Wild Thyme (F Solly)
Friday 15th August 2008 Dumpton garden &
Sericol
Quite a few butterflies around the buddleias over the
past few days, Weather this morning was good enough for me to get a few
pics, Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell,
Comma, Common Blue and Large White
all seen today. I found a grasshopper, on the lid of a metal drum in the
Sericol yard, which I couldn't id. I got my supervisor to get a pic (Thanks
Alex) so I could name it when I finished my shift. It turned out to be a
female Long-winged Conehead - a very good record. (Dylan)

2008 Hoverport
A nice micro (shame about
the photo!) on the Hoverport at lunchtime, the tiny but very attractive
Calybites aurogutella was flying amongst St John's Wort. About 10
Painted Ladies and a few Peacocks, Red Admirals,
Common Blues, Whites and tatty Meadow Browns were also whizzing
around (F Solly)

Sunday 3rd
August 2008 SBBOT
Along with others at the monthly photo club meet, went
to see the Broad Leaved Helleborines growing in a small
copse on the golf course. Maximum count came to 12 plus plants, two still in
flower but with only the top four florets on each plant still in good
condition. (Don Wilks)
Thursday 31st July 2008 Kingsgate, Pegwell &
Lydden
A brief look on the Golf Course at Kingsgate after
doing the moff trap to check for wandering Dragonflies only produced 2
Common Darters and 2 Black-tailed Skimmers, Plenty of
Gatekeepers and smaller numbers of Meadow Browns nectaring on
Knapweeds and Purple Hairstreaks showing well on a low Oak. A single
Hummingbird Hawk is notable this year, I also checked the Hoverport
after the Pegwell trap and had 6 Painted Ladies, a few Peacocks
and Red Admirals, the usual Browns, Whites and Common Blues.
A couple of hours at Lydden this afternoon in sauna like conditions. A field
near the entrance contained Round-leaved Fluellen and Corn Mint - both
tricky to see these days, thanks to the 'custodians' of the countryside and
their excessive use of herbicides. Lots of Brown Argus were also
present in that field, As you would expect at this time of year, lots of
Chalk-hill Blues on the reserve, Common Blues, more Brown
Argus and plenty of Gatekeepers and Meadow Browns. Marbled
Whites and Small Skippers were in rather short supply. A single
Wall Brown, a couple of Brimstones and Silver-spotted
Skipper just starting. (F Solly)
