Friday 29th April 2011 Stonelees nature trail
I'm not really a moth person but on a walk around
Stonelees today i came across a Latticed Heath moth close to the exit
gate Pfizers end.. This is usually a great area for Orange tip
butterflies, and when they arrive Green Hairstreak butterflies.

Sunday 24th April 2011 Broadstairs Garden
I spent some time with the camera in the garden today and was pleased to
find what I'm fairly sure is a female Variable Damselfly (Coenagrion
pulchellum) of the blue form - see photo. Also present were various
hoverflies, including Epistrophe elegans, Syrphus ribesii, Myathropa
florea and Helophilus pendulus. An ichneumon wasp
was also seen, I think Amblyteles armatorius. i found 2
interesting spiders, Tetragnatha extensa and the very
attractive Anelosimus vittatus. Finally 2 Speckled Woods
were showing well. Not bad and shows what a few days nice weather can do!

Tuesday 19th April 2011 Ham / Worth Marshes
Went for a walk this morning, hoping to find a Hairy Dragonfly, without
success. Lots of butterflies, Orange Tips, Green Veined White, Peacocks,
Comma, and Small Tortoiseshell, Large and Small White. My
patience was rewarded with my seasons first Large Red Damsel, so a
quick photo and thanks for making my morning worthwhile. (Roly W C)

recorded Small Copper Butterfly around the white house area, just a
few Slow Worms around the Big Gully and a few Lizard Orchid
Resets and a Twayblade just coming up in the Little Gully,
Small White, Green -veined White and Speckled Wood were seen in
the Elms, (Gadget)
Wednesday 13th April 2011 Sandwich Bay
I had
called into the Sandwich Bay Observatory today to pick up some bits, while
having a Coffee and a chat with Steve Ray & Ian Hodgson outside by the
Dipping Pool, we were alerted by others that a Painted Lady Butterfly
was around the front of the Ringing room, good but brief views, sadly no
photos, (Gadget)

Friday 8th April 2011 Pegwell / Cliffsend
With my head gradually recovering, I persuaded the missus to take me to
the Viking ship. We took a slow "wobble "along the cliff-top to the horse
paddocks, looking for some butterflies. Species found were: Small White,
Comma, Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell and my first "blue" of the
season, a Holly Blue. Other no ted insects were, Buff Tailed
Bumble, Red Tailed Bumble, and one which I think was "Bombus
Humilus" as far as my reference book describes, I wish it had kept
still long enough for a photo, as this is a new spot for me. ( Roly W C)
Friday 8th April 2011 Broadstairs
Whilst Checking out the insects in the garden this afternoon I was
amazed to find a Dotted Bee Fly, to complement the 2 seen at Minster.
A good record for my suburban garden, I think. Unfortunately, by the time
I'd fetched my camera it had disappeared but I'll have another look
tomorrow. (Jerry Lanfear)
Thursday 7th April 2011 Pegwell Bay
I found a Bee Fly (Bombylius major) in Stone Lees this morning, sunning itself ready
for the rigours of a days nectar hunting. There was also a male Emperor
Moth zigzagging around the paths in Stone Lees around 9.3 too - the
first of spring and very nice too. (Phil M)
Wednesday 6th April 2011 Minster Marshes
Whilst we wandered around the marshes, it was clear that it was a good
day for insects. 50+ Small Tortoiseshell butterflies were a real
treat, with Peacocks also very numerous. Green-veined and
Small White were noted along Marsh Farm Lane and a solitary Red
Admiral by the Fishermen’s car park. Two Dotted Bee-flies
(Bombylius
discolor) provided some action for the cameras and the first St. Mark’s Flies
of the year were also recorded (Gadget & Dylan)
Wednesday 6th April 2011 Mockett's Wood
A trip back to Mockett's Wood for some bird pictures was unsuccessful
but I did manage to find this very busy Bee Nest being built. (Simon
Piggott)
Saturday 2nd April 2011 Stonelees Pegwell Bay
Decided to have a look around Stonelees this afternoon, as the weather
was mild, for butterflies. I wasn't disappointed, 2 Red Admiral, 3
Small Tortoiseshell, 5 Peacock and 3 Comma. Another few
weeks of this mild weather will bring out some more, with the first dragons
also appearing any time. The Comma sat still for a picture, nice.!!!! ( Roly
