Sunday 26th April 2009 Ash Garden

Today while I was working in my garden at Ash, I found three newly emerged Ruby Tiger moths (Phragmatobia filiginosa) in the grass; I have recorded them emerging from what passes as my lawn in previous years, but three together is a new site record. (Norman M)

Thursday 23rd April 2009 Westbrook Thanet

Garden in Westbrook, I have so far seen Peacocks, several Commas, one Speckled Wood and today, I saw what looked like a female Orange tip but it didn't land...Five minutes later, I saw a male Orange tip. (Bernie Farrell)

Wednesday 22nd April Stonelees Area

An hour spent down at Stonelees after work this evening, The target was Grapholita internana; I very quickly lost interest due to the hoards of Cydia ulicetana and failed as a consequence. The only other moths were Pyrausta despicata and larva of Pempelia genistella on the Gorse. On the stroll down, Butterflies were much in evidence with Speckled Wood, Peacock, Comma, the three Whites, Orange-tip, Holly Blue, Small Copper and Green Hairstreak. Lots of low flowers at the 'bottom' particularly Doves-foot Cranesbill, Field Forget-me-knot, Cornsalad and Sticky Mouse-ear, of note for Thanet (I believe the first that I have seen here) were Thale Cress and the delicate Spring Vetch. (F Solly)

Wednesday 22nd April St Margarets Bay

Singles of Brimstone & Peacock & 3 Large Whites were all I could muster Butterfly wise late this morning whilst sitting at the cliff top (Ben Ring)

Wednesday 22nd April St Peters Thanet

I saw my second Comma of the year and a small pink moth about the size of a Cinnabar, but flatter with a furry head. I shall scour the moth pages.    (John C)

Saturday 18th April 2009 Stour Valley Area Late News

Orange tips in Fordwich, Trenley Woods and Stodmarsh between 7th and 14th April along with any number of Peacock butterflies and quite a few Commas and Speckled Woods.  (Jeremy Scarlett)

Wednesday 15th April 2009 Dumpton Thanet & Romelaere France

Last Friday the 10th April four of us went over to France for the day our destination (Romelaere Ares) I lost count of how many Brimstones and Orange-tips we encountered, I also came across some sort of Dung Beatles all working together, back in my garden on Thanet within the past four days, Large & Small Whites, Green-vain Whites, Commas, Peacocks, Small Tortoiseshells butterflies have been noted also many garden Spiders including a Foliage Spider (Clubiona terrestris) (Gadget)

Sunday 5th April 2009 Minster, Dover & Chillenden

A glorious day. I started my morning at Minster Marshes where I was fortunate to get some images of a Marsh Frog (Rana ridibunda). It was quite strange to see it basking in the early morning sunshine, as there was still a dusting of frost around the fishermen's car park. A mid-day jaunt to Deal included a detour to De Bradliegh Warf in Dover. Bev doing her usual tour of the emporium whilst I settled for a wander around the docks and Prince of Wale's Pier. A nice shoal of Thick-lipped Grey Mullet (Chelon labrosus) were feeding in the inner dock, I was almost tempted to dust down the rods! Next stop was at my daughter's cottage in Chillenden. The main reason was to see my grandson (he has just started to walk) but I did get distracted by the insects around the garden, a number of Dotted Bee-fly (Bombylias discolor) were nectaring on various flowering weeds. (Dylan)

Wednesday 1st April 2009 Monkton NR Thanet

A quick look round this small but very important reserve on Thanet this evening, good numbers of common species of birds Long-tailed, Blue, Great Tits and Chaffinches being very numerous, wire cages have been placed around the reserve covering new Orchid shoots, and the pond was looking good with very clear water with good numbers of both Great Crested and Smooth Newts showing well, worth the visit, (gadget)
