Saturday 26th April 2008 Pegwell area
No car so stuck with the delights of Thanet! Almost
immediately bored with birding so I gave up and ponced around the Pegwell
area, A few Wild Clary plants in flower along the cliff-top are
rather early. Lots in flower on the Hoverport but as you would expect mostly
plants of waste ground such as; common and Sticky Mouse-ear, Common
Whitlow-grass, Oxford Ragwort, Cornsalad, Wall Speedwell etc. Of more
interest was a scattering of Danish Scurvy-grass the first that I
have seen at Pegwell. Formerly scarce in Kent but now common along major
roads with verges due to winter salting. The more robust English
Scurvy-grass was thinly distributed in the saltmarsh. A surprise was a
decent colony of Rue-leaved Saxifrage, a very local plant on Thanet.
Lots of Ground Ivy, White Deadnettle and Lords and Ladies in
Stonelees and Common Twayblade and Water Crow-foot just
starting to flower. Despite the warm weather, rather poor for Butterflies,
Lots of Peacocks and Small Whites but just a few
Green-veined and Large Whites, only 2 Commas and 3
Orange-tips. (F Solly)

the river. (Tim H)
Tuesday 15th April 2008 Pegwell Cliff-top
Lunchtime along Pegwell Cliff-top sunny but an
unpleasant edge to the breeze, very few Butterflies on the wing although 2
Small Tortoiseshells are noteworthy these days, Other than that just
3 Peacocks, 1 Comma and 3 Small Whites. (F Solly)
Sunday 6th April 2008 East Blean
5/4/2008. At the feeding station today (I've been
desperate to say that for years) was a rather smart Yellow-necked
Mouse feasting on Sunflower hearts. Afternoon visit to East Blean
timed perfectly to coincide with total cloud so that there was little
activity. All I managed was a few of the micro moth Eriocrania
subpurpurella. Early spring flowers pretty much the same as the
previous visit although Bluebells are just starting to
flower. (F Solly)
Friday 4th April 2008 Pegwell Area
4/4/2008. Butterflies were limited to a few
Peacocks and Commas in the rather cloudy
conditions. Lots of Bees, particularly in the Gorse areas including a few
Common Carder Bees. The only plants of note were
Early Forget-me-not and Hairy Sedge - both rather
local on Thanet. (F Solly)
Friday 4th April 2008 Monkton NR
In the company of Gadget & Francis, I spent over an
hour watching the antics of the newts in a small pond inside the quarry.
Great Crested and Smooth Newts were
present along with several species of aquatic insects and a Water
Vole. Apologies for the poor quality images, I'm still learning!

Thursday 3rd April
2008 Pegwell Cliff-top

have seen this year. (F Solly)
Wednesday 2nd April
2008 Western Undercliff & Hoverport
The lunchtime jaunt along
the Western Undercliff to the Hoverport in rather weak sunshine but much
milder than of late produced a reasonable selection of Butterflies with; 12
Peacock, 1 Red Admiral, 1 Comma, 1 Speckled Wood,
1 Small White and 1 Holly Blue. I also came across a small
patch of Red Deadnettle and Dandelion which was very popular
with various bees. In my brief time there, Large Red-tailed Bumblebee,
White-tailed Bumblebee, Buff-tailed Bumblebee and Meadow
Bumblebee put in appearances. (F Solly)
