Friday 20th April 2007 Crundale / Wye area
Wednesday
and Thursday 18th and 19th April 2007
Spent two days out
photographing flowers at Spong Wood (KWT
reserve) and the Crundale / Wye area. The Bluebells is at
their best now, plenty of cowslips, primroses and other
spring flowers. At Spong Wood a few Toothwort (broomrape
relative) were out and also a good number of Herb Paris.
A few Early purple orchids also were out, with Twayblades
beginning to show. First Orange Tip was seen along with Brimstones
and Speckled wood, also saw a Hummingbird
Hawk Moth. (Don Wilks)

Monday 16th April 2007 Stonelees
Stonelees 14/4. Lots of Butterflies in the very hot sunshine. The
usual suspects were present in good numbers - Peacocks, Commas,
Small/Green-veined Whites, Speckled Woods, Orange-tips and 3 Green
Hairstreaks. Lords and Ladies flowering well, splashes of Ground
Ivy and lots of rosettes of that most spectacular of orchids - Common
Twayblade (F Solly)

Sunday 8th April 2007 Dumpton garden
Quite a few insects around the garden today. Several Drone
Flies (Eristalis tenax) were enjoying the
sunshine, as was a rather tatty Small Tortoiseshell. Best
of all was a Common Pond Skater (Gerris lacustris) that
was skimming over the surface of our splash pool - no it isn't that warm,
I just never bothered emptying it last autumn! (Dylan)
Saturday 7th April 2007 Stodmarsh NNR
6/4/2007. A not unpleasant but unremarkable afternoon visit to Stodmarsh.
Birds were much as everyone has been seeing - boring, with the addition of
a non-migrant Common Buzzard floating around. Lots of Cuckoo Flower,
Lesser Celandine and Ground Ivy with Greater Stitchwort
just starting. Good numbers of Hoverflies, as with elsewhere,
predominantly Eristalis tenax. An impressive patch of the
fungi Daldinia concentrica on an Ash stump and the lichen Cladonia
fimbriata on some rotting Elder. (F Solly)
Monday 2nd April 2007 Minster Marshes
As I was walking back to my car I found a Bee
Fly (Bombylius major) on the dead stem of a nettle. Using my
Finepix in macro mode, plus fill-in flash, I got a decent image! (Dylan)
