Moth Nights 2010

Thursday 30th September 2010 Newington  Ramsgate

A few bits and pieces in the traps today included a nice Beaded Chestnut (orange version) plus 3 Clancy's Rustics, a Rosy Rustic etc. (Phil M)

Wednesday 29th September 2010  Pegwell Trap

Night of 28/9. A sprinkling of migrants at the Pegwell trap with single Plumed Fan-foot and Delicate, 4 Silver Ys, 4 Rush Veneers and 1 Rusty Dot. Other than that rather disappointing given the conditions – the standard Black Rustics, L-albums, Feathered Ranunculus etc with singles of Beaded Chestnut, Frosted Orange and Clancy’s Rustic. (F Solly)

Tuesday 28th September 2010 Newington Ramsgate

Moths overnight included singles of Archips podana, Rush Veneer, Least Carpet, Sallow and Silver Y plus 2 Rosy Rustic, 3 Clancy's Rustic and a nice Frosted Orange. (Phil M)

Monday 27th September 2010 Newington Ramsgate

After the strong northerly wind had dropped off I at last caught a few moths ... lovely. The pick of the catch was a stunning Mottled Umber ... well okay ... grotty Mottled Umber but I don't get all that many here. There were lots of other moths - singles of Rush Veneer, Clancy's Rustic, Rosy Rustic etc plus 26 Feathered Ranunculus and 19 Lunar Underwings etc. (Phil M)

Friday 24th September 2010 Newington Ramsgate

A massive catch of Feathered Ranunculus overnight - I counted 33 which from memory I would presume to be the most I've ever caught? Not much else other than the usual mind you - the first Mallow of the autumn plus late (ish) Least Carpet the only things that spring to mind. (Phil M)

Friday 24th September 2010 Pegwell Trap

A tad more interesting in the traps last night – which is not to difficult to achieve at the moment! Most of the ‘excitement’ was at Pegwell where there were singles of Oak Lutestring, Red-green Carpet, Sallow and Pink-barred Sallow. I did say it was only a tad more interesting. (F Solly)

Thursday 23rd September 2010 Newington Ramsgate

Just thought I'd better report in as no one else seems to be sending in any reports - I can only presume that everyone's traps are as poor as mine are at the moment? It has been dire out there since about July. The normal autumn moths are starting to build up in numbers this week - I've caught up to 16 Feathered Ranunculus, 7 Lunar Underwings and 12 L Album Wainscots whilst numbers of late summer moths such as Large/Lesser Yellow Underwings and Vine's Rustics continue to fall, which is a blessing. Square Spot Rustics are still around the 20 mark most mildish nights. Overnight I took 22 species of macro plus a few micros which included singles of Acleris sparsana, Acleris variegana, Rush Veneer, Large Thorn, Sallow and Clancy's Rustic. I did catch a Dusky Lemon Sallow the other night plus a very late Currant Pug on the night of the fifth but otherwise I just seem to be getting the same old stuff night after night. The night before last I also found two Western Conifer Seed Bugs around the lights in the garden too - only the third and fourth records for here. (Phil M)

Tuesday 14th September 2010 Newington  Ramsgate

Lots of moths in the traps - very little of any interest. There were lots of Square Spot Rustics for here (67) plus 91 Large Yellow Underwings and 64 Lesser Yellow Underwings also a late (ish) example of Agriphila tristella, a Rush Veneer and a second generation Mottled Rustic which is quiet unusual as they are usually only single brooded as far as I'm aware? (Phil M)

Tuesday 14th September 2010 Dumpton Thanet

As it is this time of year  Vines Rustic's, Square Spot Rustics, Large Yellow Underwings and Lesser Yellow Underwings are all in good numbers, the only other moths worth of note: were Feathered Ranunculus, Lunar Underwing with a Fresh Blood Vein and Cyprus Pug, (Gadget)

Sunday 12th September 2010 Newington Ramsgate

A far more varied catch overnight which included a few micros which are generally scarce by this time of year in my garden - well barring the vaste amount of Agriphila geneculea and a few Eudonia angustea that always turn up during autumn anyway. Late stuff for here included singles of Bramble Shoot Moth and Trachycera advenella also a Eudonia pallida which have been extremely scarce this year plus my third ever garden Brown China Mark. Amongst the macro's were 2 Chinese Characters, Large Thorn, Yellow Barred Brindle, Centre Barred Sallow, Lunar Underwing plus two Feathered Ranunculus which were my first one's of the autumn - not the last of course. (Phil M)

Saturday 11th September 2010  Newington  Ramsgate

Still lots of common stuff coming to the lights - probably a few hundred moths overnight though the bulk of the catch were made up of Large and Lesser Yellow Underwings plus Vine's Rustics and Square Spot Rustics. Of note was a small, grey looking Footman which turned out to be my first garden record of Hoary Footman. I had thought it was a bit late for the similar and far more common Scarce Footman but may have overlooked the specimen had I seen it last month? Other non nightly stuff was virtually down to singles of Mullein Wave and a late Satin Wave. (Phil M)

Friday 10th September 2010 Dumpton Thanet

The trap held good numbers of moths mostly Large Yellow Underwings, Vines Rustic's, and Grass Moths (Agriphila geniculea) it also held a Very nice Vestal, Dark Sword-grass and a very fresh Rosy Rustic, (Gadget)

Thursday 9th September 2010 Newington Ramsgate

Overnight moths were of a slightly more interesting variety though the only decent moth that I caught was a Palpita vitrealis. Hardly anything worthy of note since the turn of the month save a quite late and fresh Common Emerald that I caught the night before last. Other recent bits have included Chinese Character, Large Thorn, White Spotted Pug, Bordered Pug, Mullein Wave, Yellow-barred Brindle, Old Lady, Straw Underwing and Centre Barred Sallow. I'm getting large numbers of some species - Large Yellow Underwings have peaked at 109 moths and Vine's Rustic's at 77 this week. (Phil M)

Tuesday 7th September 2010 Cliffsend Thanet

Quite a few moths in the trap this morning, considering the weather. I was delighted to find a Palpita vitrealis under the last egg box in the bottom, amongst all the usual moths. (Claire W)

Friday 3rd September 2010 Pegwell Bay and Ramsgate

I bumped into Pete Forrest again today at Pegwell who told me that he'd flushed a Red Underwing off the office/toilet block wall up near the car park. When I went to unlock my bike I spotted that it was back and took this photo just before it took off in an explosion of Red, black and white. The garden traps have been poor lately - quite a lot of moths but absolutely nothing of any quality. Overnight the best I could do were singles of Bordered Pug and Straw Underwing plus 3 Large Thorns. (Phil M)

Friday 3rd September 2010 Kingsgate Thanet

The Prickly Lettuce plant on the Golf Course at Kingsgate was beginning to look a little ragged; closer inspection revealed a healthy population of Small Ranunculus caterpillars. (F Solly)

Friday 3rd September 2010 Dumpton Thanet

Centre-barred Sallow and Rush Veneers were the best in the trap last night, but still getting reasonable numbers of moths considering the weather, (Gadget)
