Moth Colour Marking

As part of this year's National Moth Night18th-19th September 2009. a number of recorders around the country will be colour marking moths in the nights leading up to and in some cases for a period after (NMN) If you see/capture a colour marked moth, it would be appreciated if you could send in the details to Planetthanet.org in order to contribute to the overall return. Details required are the date, location, species, colour and position of the mark.           Many Thanks (Gadget)

Saturday 26th September 2009 Dumpton Thanet

Moths have declined over the past few nights with number down to below one hundred moths in the trap, Night 23rd 2 Clancy Rustic, and 21 Diamond Back's and on the night 24th Oak Lutestrings and Dusky-lemon Sallow were recorded, last night 3 Diamond Back's, 1 Blair's Shoulder Knot, 4 Feathered Ranunculus were the best of the bunch. (Gadget)

Thursday 24th September 2009 Newington Ramsgate

A few moths overnight included 3 Diamond Back's, 1 Mullein Wave, 1 Mallow, 9 L Album Wainscot, 2 Blair's Shoulder Knot, 2 Marbled Beauty, 1 Marbled Green, 3 Angle Shades, 9 Feathered Ranunculus, 4 Lunar Underwing, 1 Sallow, 1 Orange Sallow, 2 Silver Y and 1 Dark Spectacle. The previous night there were 3 Sallow and Red Underwing. (Phil M)

Thursday 24th September at Kingsgate and Pegwell Traps

Night of 23/9. Single Oak Lutestrings at Kingsgate and Pegwell are noteworthy for the Concrete Isle and to a slightly lesser extent Feathered Brindle and Grey Shoulder-knot - both at Pegwell. Other than that is was rather predictable. (F Solly)

Wednesday 23rd September 2009 Cliffsend

In amongst the L-album Wainscots & Blair's Shoulder-knots I was
surprised to find a Short-cloaked Moth. No migrants apart from a Rush Veneer & a few Diamond-backs. (Claire W)

Tuesday 22nd September 2009 Dumpton garden Late News

Having been "National Moth Night (weekend?)" I ran the Milton Mk VII and had the good fortune to record a Golden Twin-spot. Absolutely nothing else of note! (Dylan) P. S. Many thanks to Franny for confirmation of my id.

Tuesday 22nd September 2009 Pegwell Bay

Night of 21/9. Dusky-lemon Sallow, Sallow, Orange Sallow and Autumnal Rustic made the Pegwell trap slightly more interesting than the recent norm. Good numbers of L-album Wainscots throughout the month, the usual absence of migrants. (F Solly)

Sunday 20th September 2009  Newington Ramsgate

A slightly better selection of common stuff in the garden last night which included an Acleris cristana which is only the second one I've ever taken in my rather naff garden. A spectacular little Tortrix anyway. Other bits included the first Acleris sparsana of the autumn and a record catch (I think?) of L Album Wainscots - there being 28 of the little critters in the traps overnight which I believe is the most I've ever had? Otherwise a dozen Diamond Back's plus singles of Clepsis consimilana, Rush Veneer, Least Carpet, Yellow Shell blah blah blah blah etc.(Phil M)

Saturday 19th September 2009 Pegwell & Kingsgate Traps

Night of 18/9. My traps have been rubbish for what seems like weeks - largely due to being blown out by one wind direction or another. Less wind and a very slight improvement last night which included at Pegwell, Red-green Carpet, 4 Bricks, Yellow-line Quaker, Orange Sallow, Brindled Green and 2 Black Rustics. Interest at Kingsgate was limited to a Convolvulus Hawkmoth and a couple of Pale Tussock caterpillars on an Alder, whilst there was no interest in my garden; as usual (F Solly)

Saturday 19th September 2009   Newington Ramsgate

A few more moths overnight included about ten Diamond Back's, 1 Lobesia littoralis, 1 Carnation Tortrix, 1 Garden Pebble, 10 L Album Wainscots, 1 Clancy's Rustic and a Frosted Orange. The night prior there was little other than Clancy's Rustics. I did see a Hummingbird Hawk Moth yesterday whilst birding on the groyne near the western undercliff. (Phil M)

Thursday 17th September 2009 Dumpton Thanet

night of the 16th: 34 Diamond Back's, 2 Silver Y's, 1 Clancy's Rustic, 1 Rosy Rustic, 1 Centre-'barrel' Sallow, 1 Orange Sallow and a Convolvulus Hawkmoth. (Gadget)

Wednesday 16th September 2009 Newington Ramsgate

Obviously the garden has been dreadful for our mothy friends this past week given the stiff northerly's which are starting to drive me up the wall - if anyone's interested? Last night things picked up 'a little' and amongst all the normal mid September bits there were a Carnation Tortrix, 10 Diamond Back's, 1 Black Rustic, 2 Sallows and 2 Silver Y's. This past week the only stuff worth typing out for this rather dull instalment were singles of Red Underwing on the 11th and a Clancy's Rustic on the 12th. I did also get a second generation Mottled Rustic on the 13th too - it's not often they turn up during the autumn. (Phil M)

Sunday 13th September 2009 Eastry

Couple of firsts for the season this morning with a Large Wainscot and a Frosted Orange, together with a Rosy Rustic, two new Small Dusty Wave and very nice Common Marbled Carpet. Seven smart Willow Beauty, several Large and Lesser Yellow Underwing, not to mention the five Centre-'barrel' Sallow..  hey ho..  86 macros in all of 15 species. (Bill Martin)

Thursday 10th September 2009 Newington  Ramsgate

It's been very slow this past week and I've hardly caught anything of any interest. Judging by the lack of news on the website I can only assume that it's been poor all over? Overnight I did come across a nice fresh Sallow but otherwise the traps contained very little. Yesterday there were singles of Common Pug (2nd generation?), Shaded Broad Bar, Marbled Green etc. I did catch a Centre Barred Sallow on the 6th but even I realise that's scraping the bottom of the barrel. (Phil M)

Sunday 6th September 2009 Eastry

A very pretty Large Thorn missed the trap by a few inches and came to rest in the grass (brown stuff) this morning. I fear many must do because a young gang of extremely plump blackbirds always manage to beat me to the trap before dawn! Anyhow, this morning's survivors included notable singles of Angle Shades, L-album Wainscot, Cabbage Moth and Feathered Gothic. Also a Yellow Shell, Shuttle-shaped Dart and Small Dusty Wave. Two each of Brimstone, Burnished Brass, and Centre-barred Sallow. Best of the rest lots of Flounced Rustic, Square-spot Rustic and Vine's Rustic. In all a total of 121 macros of 25 species. (Bill Martin)
