The catches are
well down as might be expected by now but I did get a Red
Underwing the night before last then a Sallow and 11
L-album Wainscots last night. (Phil M)

Quaker, Large Wainscot, Deep-brown Dart, 7 Black Rustic
and a few Silver Ys. (Barry H)
Thursday 25th
September 2008 Newington Thanet
The garden has
been blown out these past few nights so I haven't caught much of any
note. Overnight other than the obvious there was a nice fresh
Black Rustic and my first Blair's Shoulder-knot of the
autumn. I did also get 8 L-album Wainscots - the most I've
taken so far. (Phil M)
Thursday 25th

A few moths
returning to the trap included 2 Dark Sword- grass, 4
Black Rustic, Deep-brown Dart, Frosted Orange and a few
Lunar Underwing, L-album Wainscot etc. (Barry H)

Night 20/9 - a few
bits included Dewick's Plusia, 4 Silver Y and the odd
Diamond-back, also the first Mallow of the autumn
amongst the usual moths. (Barry H)
Saturday 20th September 2008 Pegwell Trap
Night of 19/9. 'Only' three migrants in the
Pegwell moth trap, although not to be sniffed at - singles of Convolvulus
Hawk, Delicate and Dewick's Plusia. Other 'stuff'
included; Grey Pine and Spruce Carpet, Orange Sallow,
Brindled Green and a season's peak of 36 L-album Wainscots. (F
Solly)
Saturday 20th
September 2008 Beltinge
Night 19/9 -
single Convolvulus Hawk-moth, 2 Black Rustic, 8
L-album Wainscot and a Centre-barred Sallow were the best
moths on what was a clear and pretty chilly night. Might be the last
moths I see for a bit as the stiffer easterlys kick in. (Barry H)

Thursday 18th September 2008 Newington
Thanet
A surprising
number of moths came to the light traps overnight - over 200 macro
moths of 32 species. Mind you 64 of them were Lesser Yellow
Underwings I suppose? Of note the first Deep Brown dart
I've taken here in years (they used to be annual) plus a Large
Thorn, Centre-barred Sallow, Rosy Rustic, 5 L-album Wainscots
etc. The only possible migrants I took were 5 Silver Y's and
a single Diamond Back. (Phil M)

September 2008 Newington Thanet
Yesterdays lost
Dewick's Plusia didn't turn up but there were better numbers of
'stuff' overnight. 'Stuff' included 2 Large Thorns, 5
Feathered Ranunculus, 2 Lunar Underwings etc (yawn!) and
best of all a Dusky-lemon Sallow amongst a catch of 30
species of macros and a hand full of micros. I will be omitting
'stuff' for the normal 'bits' on my moth entrees in future to save
confusion. Solly will be using 'stuff' soon - you mark my words.
He's always copying me. (Phil M)

September 2008 Newington Thanet
Another proper
rarity in one of the traps this afternoon when I emptied them - a
Dewick's Plusia. Unfortunately I lost the darn thing whilst
taking photos so if anyone wants to see it then let’s hope it comes
back to the light tonight? It's out there in the garden somewhere? I
had taken a few snaps just for insurance so it could have been
worse. Not much else - 2 Lunar Underwings and 4+ Silver
Y's etc. (Phil M)

Night 15/9 - not a
huge amount in the trap, highlight being a Vestal, other
moths included Rush Veneer, 5 Diamond-backed Moths, 8 Silver Y,
Frosted Orange and a White-spotted Pug. (Barry H)
Monday 15th
September 2008 Dumpton Thanet
Another
Convolvulus Hawkmoth in the trap last night which brings it up
to two for this year, other moths of note: 3 Silver Ys, 4
Diamond Back Moths, 2 Rush Veneers and 5 L-album
Wainscot and the first Lunar Underwing. (Gadget)

September 2008 Beltinge
Night 14/9 -
afraid I've been on the verge of moffing madness lately and had
quite nearly packed in for the year. The forecast winds are not
ideal here but just a touch south of east means at least I'll get
some moths. Last nights delights were 2 Rusty-dot Pearl, 1
Rush Veneer, 3 Diamond-backs and 13 Silver Y.
Other bits included 2 Centre-barred Sallow and 7 L-album
Wainscot. The last few weeks have seen huge numbers of Large
Yellow Underwings swamping the trap, a reasonable moth was a
Porter's Rustic last week. (Barry Hunt)
Saturday 13th
September 2008 Newington Thanet
Virtually nothing
worth talking about in the traps overnight - 2 Purple Bars
carried on the good run of the species in my garden this year,
otherwise nothing of any better quality than a Copper Underwing!
Cack! I went to Pegwell last night to try a bit of 'gooping' for Red
Underwing and Old Lady etc. I was really hoping for a Clifden
Nonpareil but who isn't? Anyway things got off to a bad start when I
noticed a near full moon! I knew it was going to be clearish but the
sight of this made me sure I was wasting my time but I just fancied
going for whatever reason. My two year old 'goop' solution (brown
sugar, molasses, beer, rum and rotten bananas) failed to attract a
single moth - though as I say the conditions were very poor.
Everything was very wet underfoot soon after darkness too. I did
have a few walks around the Country Park netting with a torch where
I caught many Square-spot Rustics, 2 Willow Beauty, 2
Snout and a Eudonia pallida. There were a few
Silver Y's and an Angle Shades flying around what's
left of the buddlieia near the car park. Incredible numbers of
Square-spot Rustics about - I caught 3 with one sweep of the net
at one point! (Phil M)
Friday 12th
September 2008 Newington Thanet
Slightly better
for moths overnight with a few better quality things showing up,
Goodies included singles of 1 Gem,1 Frosted Orange and
1 Orange Sallow - the Sallow being only my second ever
garden record. Other things included 1 Agriphila latistria,1
Eudonia pallida, a late Cherry Bark Moth,1
Purple Bar,2 Large Thorns,2 Copper Underwing,1
Rosy Footman etc. (Phil M)
Friday 12th
September 2008 Dumpton Thanet
Night of the 11th September best
moth of the night was The Vestal only the second time in my trap the first one being back on the 3rd October
2002, other bits of note: 1 Old Lady, 1 Copper Underwing,
1 Dark Sword Grass, 1 Burnished Brass and 3
Feathered Ranunculus. (Gadget)
Wednesday 10th
September 2008 Newington Thanet
Slightly better
for moths over here last night - I even caught a proper moth - a
rarity too, a female Four-spotted Footman. Quite a surprise
to get such a creature when it's been dire out there of late, other
bits included 1 Eudonia pallida, 1 Purple Bar,
3 Large Thorns and a Feathered Ranunculus. Poor as I
say the last couple of nights - a late Dark-barred Twin-spot
Carpet on the night of the 7th and the first Rusty Dot of
the year on the following night the only other things of note. (Phil
M)
Monday 8th September 2008 Kingsgate &
Pegwell Traps
Night of 7/9. Kingsgate continues to be
blighted by hundreds of Large Yellow Underwings and little
else as a consequence. Pegwell has escaped the curse at the moment
and last night produced a better variety than of late. Nothing of
any great excitement, even for someone as excitable as myself but it
was at least mildly amusing. Amongst the usual dross were;
Gallium Carpet, Spruce Carpet, Bordered Beauty, Six-striped
Rustic, Brindled Green, Frosted Orange and a fairly late
Brown China-mark. A few Diamond-backs and a Rush
Veneer provided a hint of migration.

Sunday 7th
September 2008 Newington Thanet
Very little these
past two nights, Overnight a Chinese Character, Rosy Rustic
and Copper Underwing the best of a very bad bunch. I did
catch a Ruby Tiger the night prior. Wow!! Better go before I
get you all over excited out there in cyber land? (Phil M)
Friday 5th
September 2008 Newington Thanet
200+ macro moths
of 33 species overnight - mainly Large Yellow Underwings,
Setaceous Hebrew Characters and Square-spot Rustics of
course, Little of any quality though 2 Purple Bars and 5
Burnished Brass of note more for the numbers of them rather than
anything else. (Phil M)
Friday 5th
September 2008 Dumpton Thanet
The number of
moths has declined over the past few nights Probably the most
interesting moth in the trap have been; White Point, Straw
Underwing, Copper Underwing, Feathered Ranunculus and last night
Centre-barred Sallow as the nights close in and the tempters
drop down I'm not expecting much in the way of any goodies to
drop in my Trap. (Gadget)
Wednesday 3rd
September 2008 Newington Thanet
Gotta agree with
Hairy - even I'm finding the traps dull in the extreme and I'm meant
to be the enthusiastic one? Unlike him I'm not getting any migrants
or autumnal stuff like Sallows etc. Virtually nothing of any note
this past two night - a Yellow Belle or a Large Thorn?
Probably the most interesting thing I've had was a very late
Lobesia absciana? No - that's not very interesting is it? I
did find a Green-veined White in the traps a few nights back?
Nah - even that's dull.ZZZzzzzzzzz...... (Phil M)
Monday 1st
September 2008 Newington Thanet
Still good numbers
of common moths at the garden traps even though it was a bit breezy
overnight. Of note: singles of Pyrausta despicata, Blood Vein,
Tawny Speckled Pug, Small Waved Umber, Purple Bar, Large Thorn,
Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, Copper Underwing, Old Lady and
Red Underwing, Also 10 Silver Y's and 51 Square-spot
Rustics being the highest counts for the year here. (Phil M)
Monday 1st September 2008 Pegwell &
Kingsgate Traps
Moths! Well what can I say, very exciting if
you like Large Yellow Underwings (up to 366), Vine's
Rustics, Square-spot Rustics and Setaceous Hebrew Characters.
I don't so it’s been hell. There was been a hint of migration over
the last week with a couple of Convolvulus Hawks, a number of
Dark Sword-grass, 1 Pearly Underwing, 1 Tree-lichen
Beauty, 1 Plumed Fan-foot and the odd Rusty Dot
and Rush Veneer. Early autumn species are beginning to appear
- Orange and Centre-barred Sallows, Feathered Ranunculus
and 2nd generation L-album Wainscot, More
Phyllonorycters in the traps than usual - mostly
geniculella and messaniella with a couple of the rather
attractive schreberella. Yellow V Moth seems to
be established at Pegwell - the only Kent location of this very
local moth - one even landed on our table in the Belle Vue the other
night! A Restharrow is of local interest, although was presumably a
wanderer from Sandwich Bay as was an Archer's Dart and a
presumed 2nd generation Rosy Wave. To keep Phil happy, I will
say something really pointless like Agriphila geniculea
is very interesting. (F Solly)
