Moth Nights with RSPB

Saturday 30th September 2006 Westgate Thanet

Rather quiet last night, but I did get another Clancy’s Rustic, 2 Diamond-backs, 1 Delicate, 3 Rush Veneer, 1 Black Rustic, 1 Blair’s Shoulder Knot, 1 Copper Underwing, 1 Lunar Underwing, 1 Marbled Beauty and 1 Silver Y. (Tim Hodge)

Friday 29th September 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 28/9. Favourable looking conditions - perhaps a bit breezy but very disappointing by recent standards, particularly at Pegwell. Kingsgate. 1 Gem, 4 Pearly Underwing, 3 Delicates, 1 Small Mottled Willow, 1 Clancy's Rustic, 5 Scarce Bordered Straws, 1 Rusty Dot and 18 Rush Veneers. Nothing of note amongst the very few residents and nothing of note at Pegwell which again presumably suffered from the breeze. (F Solly)

Friday 29th September 2006 Newington Thanet

Moths overnight included: 1 Least Carpet, 1 Spruce Carpet, 1 Clancy's Rustic (different to one the night previous) 1 Scarce Bordered Straw and 1 2nd generation Mottled Rustic. (Phil M)

Friday 29th September 2006 Dumpton garden

Night of 28th September. The first time I've used the trap for a while, shift patterns and a wedding in Sheffield being the problem. A reasonable night with my first Clancy's Rustic being the obvious highlight. Other migrants were 1 Delicate, 1 Convolvulus Hawkmoth, 3 Silver Y and 14 Rush Veneer. (Dylan)

Thursday 28th September 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 27th September 2006. A real migrant fest at Kingsgate last night although unfortunately nothing new. The migrants outnumbered the poor selection of residents. Another Blair's Mocha, 2 Convolvulus Hawkmoths, 1 Dark Sword-grass, 10 Pearly Underwings, 14 Delicates, 1 Clancy's Rustic, 2 Small Mottled Willow, 17 Scarce Bordered Straws, 64 Rush Veneers and 3 Rusty Dots. Pegwell was blown out for much of the night; single Pearly Underwing, Clancy's Rustic, Scarce Bordered Straw and 4 Rush Veneers were the only migrants. Pick of the residents were 2 Dusky Lemon Sallows and late Oncocera semirubella. (F Solly)

Thursday 28th September 2006 Newington Thanet

A few 'bits' in the traps overnight. My 3rd garden record of Clancy's Rustic - and my first of the year at long last, plus singles of Pearly Underwing and
Scarce Bordered Straw. Otherwise 1 Least Carpet, 1 Rush Veneer, 1 Blair's Shoulder-knot etc. Lesser Yellow Underwings were up to 46 plus a very late Endotricha flammealis perhaps noteworthy?? I'm stretching things a bit here perhaps?? (Phil M)

Wednesday 27th September 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 26th September2006. A reasonable selection of late-flying and migrant species. Notable were Black Rustic, Deep-brown Dart, Feathered Brindle, Canary-shouldered Thorn and the stunning micro Anthophila fabriciana. I was surprised to catch a late Flame. On the migrant front were singles of Dark Sword-grass and Scarce Bordered Straw, two each of Silver Y, Pearly Underwing and Delicate and 10 Rush Veneer, which seem to be all over the place at present. (Dave B)

Wednesday 27th September 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 26th September 2006. Kingsgate.  A cooler night than of late with substantially fewer moths. Dusky Lemon Sallow, Large Wainscot, Feathered Brindle and a presumed 2nd generation Treble Brown Spot were the pick of the residents. Few migrants with singles of Pearly Underwing, Small Mottled Willow and Silver Y, 10 Scarce Bordered Straws and 8 Rush Veneers. Surprisingly few of the latter given that I disturbed 400+ from the long grass in the area during the afternoon. Even fewer moths at Pegwell although there was a goody in the form of a Plumed Fan-foot - although it flew out of the trap as I opened it. The only there migrants were single Convolvulus Hawkmoth, Pearly Underwing, Scarce Bordered Straw and Silver Y with 10 Rush Veneers.  A fairly standard selection of residents including Deep Brown Dart, Black Rustic, Feathered Brindle, Blair's Shoulder-knot, Beaded Chestnut, Mallow etc. (F Solly)

Wednesday 27th September 2006 Westgate Thanet

A good night by my garden’s standards, with 1 Clancy’s Rustic, 1 Autumnal Rustic, 1 Delicate, 1 Blair’s Shoulder-Knot, 3 Diamond-backs, 1 Carcina quercana, 1 Clepsis consimilana, 1 Rush Veneer, 6 L-album Wainscot, 6 Feathered Ranunculus, 1 Lunar Underwing, 1 Copper Underwing, 2 Angle Shades, 1 Flounced Rustic (honest, Dave), 5 Pale Mottled Willow, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw and 1 Silver Y. The night before I caught what was probably the same Duponchelia fovealis from 4 days previously, 1 Acleris sparsana, 3 Rush Veneer, 1 Dark Sword Grass, 3 Pearly Underwing, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw and 3 Silver Y. (Tim Hodge)

Wednesday 27th September 2006 Newington Thanet

The poorest catch of the autumn so far overnight with only just over 100 macro moths of 21 species plus only 4 of micro. Only 'bits' worthy of any mention were 1 Least Carpet, 1 Mallow, 1 Pearly Underwing, 2 Scarce Bordered Straw and a single Rush Veneer. (Phil M)

Tuesday 26th September 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 25th September 2006. Very few moths in the trap last night, no residents of note although still a good selection of migrants. 1 Convolvulus Hawkmoth, 2 Dark Swordgrass, 2 Pearly Underwings, 2 Delicates, 1 Cosmopolitan, 6 Scarce Bordered Straws, 1 Ni, 2 Rusty Dot and 20 Rush Veneers. Very poor at Pegwell - the fewest moths of the month so far. 2 Delicates and 3 Scarce Bordered Straws being by far the 'best'. (F Solly)

Tuesday 26th September 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 25th September. Rather quiet last night compared to the night before. Still a few regular migrants with 4 Scarce Bordered Straw, 12 Rush Veneer and a couple of Silver Y. Of some note was my first Straw Dot in a long time. Otherwise 12 Feathered Ranunculus and 8 each of Angle Shades and Lunar Underwing. Nicest moth was yet another Canary-shouldered Thorn. (Dave B)

Tuesday 26th September 2006 Newington Thanet

A few migrants made it into the traps overnight though none of the one's I was after unfortunately. There were 3 Scarce Bordered Straw, 1 Pearly Underwing, 1 Delicate, 1 Silver Y and 1 Rush Veneer. Very little else
worthy of mentioning 1 Least Carpet, 1 Mallow and an Acleris sparsana the best of the bunch. (Phil M)

Monday 25th September 20006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 24th September 2006. Residents again poor. Reasonable selection of migrants.  1 Gem, 3 Convolvulus Hawk-moths, 1 Four-spotted Footman, 2 Dark Sword-grass, 8 Pearly Underwing, 9 Delicate, 3 Small Mottled Willows, 1 Clancy's Rustic, 5 Scarce Bordered Straws, 4 Rusty Dots and 23 Rush Veneers. The first Red-green Carpet and Deep Brown Darts of the year at Pegwell and 5 Spruce Carpets were the most notable of the residents A selection of migrants with 1 Blair's Mocha, 1 Convolvulus Hawk-moth, 1 Hummingbird Hawk-moth, 2 Pearly Underwings, 1 Delicate, 1 Small Mottled Willow, 5 Scarce Bordered Straws, 2 Silver Y's, 4 Rusty Dot's and 28 Rush Veneers. (F Solly)

Monday 25th September 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 24th September 2006. What a difference a day makes! The night before was dullsville with hardly anything in the trap (apart from a nice Canary-shouldered Thorn). Last night it was quality all the way. New for the site was Autumnal Rustic, 2 Deep Brown Dart, 2 Black Rustic, Feathered Brindle and the migrant pyralid Palpita vitrialis. Other migrants included Ni Moth, Clancy's Rustic, Convolvulus Hawk-moth, Silver Y, Scarce Bordered Straw, Dark Sword-grass and 6 Rush Veneer. Other moths included 3 Common Marbled Carpet, Brindled Green, a high count of 10 Angle Shades and a Twenty-plume Moth. (Dave B)

Monday 25th September 2006 Newington Thanet

Another disappointing night in reality as I am expecting something half decent but it never seems to arrive. That said 24-macro specie plus 10 of micro overnight but nothing unexpected. Best bits were: 2 Mallow, 1 Large Thorn, 1 Pearly Underwing and 1 Black Rustic. Also another Acleris sparsana (a good run of these this autumn) plus another very late Small Magpie Moth. Other common migrants were singles of Silver Y and Diamond Back plus 3 Rush Veneers. (Phil M)

Sunday 24th September 20006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 23rd September 20006. As usual, nothing of note amongst the resident species, a scattering of migrants but only what are currently the usual suspects. 1 Convolvulus Hawk-moth, 1 Pearly Underwing, 5 Delicate, 1 Small Mottled Willow, 11 Scarce Bordered Straws and 8 Rush Veneers. A similar situation at Pegwell with 1 Convolvulus Hawk-moth, 1 Pearly Underwing, 4 Delicate, 2 Small Mottled Willow, 4 Scarce Bordered Straws, 9 Silver Y, 1 Rusty Dot and 20 Rush Veneers. (F Solly)

Sunday 24th September 2006 Newington Thanet

Heavy rain on and off all night after midnight didn’t help the mothing - I did get a male Gem and the first Blair's Shoulder-knot of 2006 - but other than that only Large Thorn, a late Endotricha flammealis and 2 Acleris sparsana as back up. (Phil M)

Sunday 24th September 2006 Westgate Thanet

A rather better night, including a Clancy's Rustic, an Orange Sallow, a Black Rustic, 12 Diamond-backs, 2 Amblyptilia acanthadactyla, 1 Least Carpet, 1 Light Emerald, 6 Shuttle-shaped Darts, 3 L-album Wainscots, 4 Lunar Underwing, 1 Angle Shades, 8 Pale Mottled Willow, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw and 1 Silver Y. (Tim Hodge)

Saturday 23rd September 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 22nd September. Very little in the trap overnight but a couple of highlights. First was a nice Orange Sallow, followed by a pristine Clancy's Rustic - a first for the site. Thanks Gadget for showing me yours from yesterday, very instructive! (Dave B)

Saturday 23rd September 2006 Newington Thanet

A disappointing little spell in the back garden traps this past few nights considering all the half decent stuff going on around the coastal traps in Thanet. Overnight I took an ever-dwindling array of moths, which included 1 Mallow, 1 Large Thorn, 1 Treble Bar and 1 Delicate. Other bits recently have included the occasional Scarce Bordered Straw, Sallow (21st) 1 Wax Moth (20th) and a Plodia interpunctella on the 21st, which was new specie of Pyralid to the back garden traps. Quite a few Harlequin Ladybirds about recently - I caught about half a dozen one night. (Phil M)

Saturday 23rd September 2006 Pegwell  & Kingsgate Traps

Night of 22nd September 2006 Pegwell was absolutely dire! The first Mallow and Feathered Brindle of the year and the only migrants being 4 Scarce Bordered Straws and 4 Rush Veneers. Kingsgate was also appalling for residents with a Feathered Brindle being by far the best moth. A scattering of migrants - 2 Convolvulus Hawk-moths, 3 Pearly Underwings, 3 Delicates, 2 Small Mottled Willows, 7 Scarce Bordered Straws, 10 Rush Veneers and another Antigastra catalaunalis. (F Solly)

Friday 22nd September 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 21st September 2006 Continuing to be poor for resident species, a Sallow (scarce here) being the only thing of note. A good selection of migrants, the best of which was Blair’s Mocha. In addition, 1 Gem, 8 Convolvulus Hawk-moths, 2 Dark Sword-grass, 2 Pearly Underwing, 2 Delicate, 1 Small Mottled Willow, 5 Scarce Bordered Straws and 32 Rush Veneers. Pegwell was blown out for the first part of the night. A Dusky Thorn was the pick of the residents with migrants being restricted to 1 Dark Sword-grass, 2 Delicates, 2 Scarce Bordered Straws and a Dioryctria simplicella. (F Solly)

Friday 22nd September 2006 Pegwell NR

Night of 21st September 2006. Despite the breezy conditions, I also trapped on the Reserve at Pegwell. Very few moths. A number of Sallows and Barred Sallows, 1 Dusky Lemon Sallow and a Dusky Thorn were perhaps the most interesting along with a Caloptilia semifascia and a late Nyctegretis lineana. The few migrants were 4 Convolvulus Hawk-moths, 1 Delicate and 4 Scarce Bordered Straws. (F Solly)

Friday 22nd September 2006 Dumpton Thanet

Night of the 21st September 2006 turned up a few bits with another Convolvulus Hawkmoth in support was 1 Red Underwing, 3 Scarce Bordered Straw, 1 Four-spotted Footman (Female), 1 Delicate, 2 Rusty-dot Pearl,1 Dark Sword-grass and 1 Clancy's Rustic. (Gadget)

Friday 22nd September 2006 Westgate Thanet

Not a huge amount in my trap over the past few days, but I did catch a Duponchelia fovealis today. (F.S) Tells me that this is only the second Thanet record of this rare pyralid. (Tim Hodge)

Thursday 21st September 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 20th September 2006 Very poor for both numbers and species of resident moths, a Feathered Gothic being the only thing of note.  A scattering of migrants with single Convolvulus Hawk, Delicate and Ni, 3 Pearly Underwings and 3 Scarce Bordered Straws. Nothing of note at Pegwell. (F Solly)

Thursday 21st September 2006 Garden Elvington

My first Convolvulus for the year plus 3 Scarce Bordered Straw (been getting them rather frequent this year), 2 Autumnal and 1 White Ermine (I thought it was a bit late) (TRP)

Wednesday 20th September 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 19th September. Fewer moths still but some nice ones. Best of all was a fine Dusky-lemon Sallow, which flew into the kitchen though an open window! In the trap was a late Endotrichia flammealis, Agonopterix nervosa, 3 Lunar Underwing, 5 Feathered Ranunculus and a Galium Carpet. Migrants included 4 Dark Sword grass, 3 Silver Y and a Diamond-back Moth. (Dave B)

Wednesday 20th September 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Kingsgate. Night of 19th September 2006. A lot less moths last night, although there was a Striped Hawk (my 10th so far this year), other migrants being 10 Scarce Bordered Straws, 2 Dark Sword-grass and 2 Pearly Underwings. The only residents of note were a Pediasia contaminella and the first Brick of the year. Pegwell. 2 Dark Sword-grass, 2 Pearly Underwings and 1 Scarce Bordered Straw were the only migrants. Presumed 2nd generation Small Emerald and Short-cloaked Moth and a total of 26 L-album Wainscots were the only things of note. (F Solly)

Wednesday 20th September 2006 Newington Thanet

A much smaller catch overnight though still the occasional thingamy making the 'grand opening of the traps' worthwhile. The first trap held very little but trap number two held a Red Underwing, 2 Sallows and a Small Mottled Willow, which was only my third, capture of the autumn. Other makeweight species included singles of Diamond Back and Rush Veneer, 1 Silver Y, 1 Acleris sparsana, 1 Clepsis consimilana and 1 Blastobasis decolorella. (Phil M)

Tuesday 19th September 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 18th September. Rather quiet with smaller numbers of moths in the trap. Best was my first example of the pyralid Orthopygia glaucinalis. There were few migrants with 1-2 of Silver Y, Dark Sword-grass, Pearly Underwing, Scarce Bordered Straw and Diamond-back Moth. (Dave B)

Tuesday 19th September 2006 Newington Thanet

Far less in the traps overnight though it did contain 2 Scarce Bordered Straws, which in a normal year are a moth not to be sniffed at, plus a rather dead (probable?) Porters Rustic, which is scarce migrant
moth and being a Thanet first, it would nice to see a live one. I say 'probable' as the moth is (a) Dead (b) Worn and (c) a rarity I’ve not seen before - hence my caution. I’ve passed it on via a third party to 'Herr
Franny Know-it-all Hairy pants' (exact copy of as it's written on his birth certificate) for verification. It a very dull boring dead thing anyway - the moths not much better either. I caught the live Porters Rustic on the night of the 17th but it disappeared when I tried to pot it. It must have flown back into the trap and got fried in yesterday’s sunny weather?? (Phil M)

Tuesday 19th September 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 18th September 2006. A slight increase in migrant activity at Kingsgate overnight with 17 Scarce Bordered Straws, 1 Bordered Straw, 1 Small Mottled Willow, 6 Pearly Underwing and another male Four-spotted Footman. The best moth however was the pyralid Dioryctria simplicella  new to Thanet. Again little in the way of autumnal species and a rather boring selection of drab residents. Absolutely nothing of note and Pegwell and very poor numbers. (F Solly)

Tuesday 19th September 2006 Stodmarsh NNR

I found this freshly emerged Pink-barred Sallow resting on some Ivy in Stodmarsh car park last night whilst out on yet another unsuccessful Speckled Bush-cricket hunt with Dave Coppen. Quite a few moths
nectering - mainly Square-spot Rustics. (Phil M)

Monday 18th September 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 17th September. A similar mix of moths as yesterday but with fewer migrants. New was a female Four-spotted Footman and a freshly emerged Brindled Green. Other resident species included Burnished Brass, Feathered Ranunculus, Lunar Underwing, 2 Snout, 10 L-album Wainscot and another Agriphila latistria. Migrants included 2 Scarce Bordered Straw, Bordered Straw, 2 Dark Sword-grass, Delicate and Silver Y.         (Dave B)

Monday 18th September 2006 Newington Thanet

Night of 17th September. The catch was slightly down on previous nights but still quite a few moths in the traps. Best 'bits' were 1 Maiden's Blush,1 Gem,1 Bordered Pug,1 Scarce Bordered Straw,1 Centre-barred Sallow and a late Eudonia pallida. Also a few common migrants with 6 Diamond Back's plus singles of Rush Veneer and Silver Y. (Phil M)

Sunday 17th September 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 16th September. Another warmish and humid night and another good haul of moths. New for the site were Mottled Rustic and Agriphila latistria. A good variety of resident species included Large Thorn, Small Blood-vein, Snout, Nutmeg and a high of 8 Copper Underwing. Migrants were well represented with singles of Delicate, Dark Sword-grass, Small Mottled Willow, Pearly Underwing, Hummingbird Hawk-moth and Rush Veneer, 3 Silver Y and 5 Scarce Bordered Straw. (Dave B)

Sunday 17th September 2006 Newington Thanet

Good numbers of moths overnight given the time of year but no rarities unfortunately. A Pretty Chalk Carpet was a good moth for the garden also 1 Mullein Wave, 1 Bordered Pug, 1 Cypress Pug, 1 Lesser Broad-bordered
Yellow Underwing
, 1 Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, 2 Archips podana, 1 Celypha striana, 1 Acleris sparsana, 1 Clepsis consimilana, 1 Lobesia littoralis, 1 Agonopterix nervosa and 1 Phlyctaenia coronata. Migrant numbers were 4 Diamond Back's, 2 Rush Veneer, 1 Pearly Underwing, 2 Scarce Bordered Straw and 3 Silver Y. Numbers still incredibly high for mid-September with 11 Small Dusty Wave, 11 Willow Beauty, 41 Large Yellow Underwing, 31 Lesser Yellow Underwing, 39 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 17 Square-spot Rustic, 41 Pale Mottled Willow, 16 Vine's Rustic and 18 L-Album Wainscot. All in all 297 macro moths of 45 species plus another 12 species of micro. Lets hope these temperatures hold until the proper autumn species emerge. (Phil M)

Saturday 16th September 2006 A two-night stay at SBBOT

A two-night stay at SBBOT, using two traps, turned up a good variety of moths including the following. Thursday 14th September: Scarce Bordered Straw 2, Small Mottled Willow 4, Delicate 1, Convolvulus Hawkmoth (I beside trap, one on Heligoland trap), Archer’s Dart 1, Rush Veneer 10, Friday 15th September: Scarce Bordered Straw 2, Feathered Brindle 1, Rusty Dot Pearl 1, Small Mottled Willow 1, Pearly Underwing 3, Quite a change from inland northwest Kent! (Peter and Pauline Heathcote)

Saturday 16th September 2006 My Work Place Thanet

Coming towards the end of my shift at 6.10am i noticed a moth flying around the crisps/drinks area of our store, which turned out to be a Hummingbird Hawk-Moth. (Craig S)

Saturday 16th September 2006 Convolvulus Hawk-Moth

I have just found a Convolvulus Hawk-Moth in my garden in Cardiff South Wales (R. M. Pitman)

Saturday 16th September 2006 Newington Thanet

A surprising number of moths overnight given the strong northerly wind (my back garden faces north) with 28 species of macro and 7 species of micro making it into the traps. Nothing too exciting - singles of Pearly Underwing, Scarce Bordered Straw, Rusty Dot and Diamond Back plus 1 Blood Vein, 1 Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, 3 Small Square-spot and 1 Lunar Underwing. (Phil M)

Saturday 16th September 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 15th September. Another interesting mix of migrants and newly emerged autumnal types. Another very fresh Convolvulus Hawkmoth was patiently waiting for me in the trap, this one much paler the last one. Other migrants included 3 Silver Y, 2 Pearly Underwing, 3 Rush Veneer, 7 Scarce Bordered Straw, and single Dark Sword-grass and Small Mottled Willow. New for my trap were single Beaded Chestnut and Spruce Carpet. Also nice were Large Thorn, Small Emerald, Annulet, 4 Burnished Brass and 2 Lunar Underwing. (Dave B)

Friday 15th September 2006 Pegwell Thanet

Night of the 14th September 2006 A Beaded Chestnut Pegwell Trap (F Solly)

Friday 15th September 2006 Newington Thanet

Quite a few moths in the 2 traps which included a nice female Four-spotted Footman. Otherwise all the normal candidates plus 2 Diamond Back, 1 Rush Veneer, 1 Amblyptilia acanthadactyla, 1 Agonopterix nervosa, 1 Endotricha flammealis, 1 Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, 1 Mottled Rustic, 2 Lunar Underwing, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw and 1 Silver Y. Good numbers of Willow Beauty overnight with 17 on the shed/house wall and another 7 in the traps. (Phil M)

Friday 15th September 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 14th September. With more favourable conditions last night I recorded a few more moths than of late. Best was a superb Convolvulus Hawk-moth sitting on the wall outside the trap - have been after one for a while now! Also new for the old balcony were Lunar Underwing, Sallow and a nice second generation Small Emerald. Other migrants included a record high seven Scarce Bordered Straw, Pearly Underwing, Small Mottled Willow, Silver Y and two Rush Veneer. (Dave B)

Thursday 14th September 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 13th September. Considering events not too far away from here the catch was a bit disappointing. However, I did record a reasonable selection but with very few migrants involved. Singles of Rush Veneer, Dark sword grass, Pearly Underwing, Scarce Bordered Straw and Silver Y were the best I could manage! Otherwise, yet another Annulet and a nice Feathered Ranunculus added some element of quality. (Dave B)

Thursday 14th September 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Kingsgate, night of 13/9. Rather dull and boring on the concrete Isle for both resident and migrant species so far this month. Autumnal species have been slow to appear and migrants have been in short supply and lacking in quality. A bit of a better night last night for migrants. The pick of the bunch was a nice male Four-spotted Footman with a supporting cast of; Vestal, Gem, 2 Convolvulus Hawks, 3 Dark Sword-grass, 3 Pearly Underwings, 1 Delicate, 8 Scarce Bordered Straws, 4 Rusty Dots and 9 Rush Veneers. Pegwell doesn't normally perform on the same night as Kingsgate, so it was a pleasant surprise to have a good selection of migrants there as well. The highlight was a cracking Antigastra catalaunalis, along with a Convolvulus Hawk, 3 Dark Sword-grass, 2 Pearly Underwing, Cosmopolitan, Small Mottled Willow, 7 Scarce Bordered Straws, 2 Rusty Dots and 8 Rush Veneers. (F Solly)

Thursday 14th September 2006 Newington Thanet

A disappointing catch given the high temperatures and southerly winds. Hardly any migrants - only singles of Silver Y, Diamond Back and Rush Veneer. The only noteworthy bits were 3rd generation Ruby Tiger, 2nd
generation Mottled Rustic, 1 Sallow, 1 Centre-barred Sallow, 1 Ephistia parasitella and 2 Agonopterix nervosa. (Phil M)

Thursday 14th September 2006 Westgate Thanet

A fair variety for my garden, although numbers were down. Bits included 1 Diamond-backed, 4 Rush Veneer, 1 Small Emerald, 1 Blood Vein, 1 Light Emerald, 2 Cypress Pug, 1 Yellow-barred Brindled, 1 Large Thorn, 1 Waved Umber, 1 Vapourer, 2 Pearly Underwing, 1 Feathered Gothic, 1 L-album Wainscot, 2 Copper Underwing, 2 Scarce Bordered Straw, 1 Bordered Straw, 1 Burnished Brass and 3 Silver Y. (Tim Hodge)

Wednesday 13th September 2006 Westgate Thanet

A few bits last night included 1 Dark Fruit-tree Tortrix, 1 Pyrausta aurata, 5 Rush Veneer, 1 Small Blood Vein, 1 Common Marbled Carpet, 2 Currant Pugs, 1 Waved Umber, 1 Centre-barred Sallow and 1 Silver Y. (Tim Hodge)

Wednesday 13th September 2006 Newington Thanet

A very warm night pulled in quite a few moths to the traps including a few migrant species - 3 Scarce Bordered Straw, 1 Pearly Underwing, 1 Silver Y, 1 Dioryctria abietella and 3 Diamond Back's. Numbers of common species were very high for the time of year with 34 Small Dusty Wave, 15 Willow Beauty, 44 Large Yellow Underwing, 56 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 26 Square-spot Rustic, 27 Pale Mottled Willow and 54 Vine's Rustic. Very little else worthy of note - 1 Currant Pug, 1 Least Carpet and a single Centre-barred Sallow the best bits. (Phil M)

Wednesday 13th September 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 12th September. What with warm and muggy conditions overnight the stage appeared to be set for greater things. However, as is the norm of late, the eventual catch wasn't up to much. I did catch my third Annulet of the season which was nice. I also recorded a high count of 40 Small Dusty Waves. Otherwise much of the same old stuff apart from a Centre-barred Sallow and a couple of Small Blood-veins. Migrants were reduced to single Rush Veneer, Scarce Bordered Straw and Dark Sword-grass. (Dave B)

Tuesday 12th September 2006 Westgate Thanet

A very unseasonable Waved Umber last night, plus 1 Diamond-backed, 1 Carnation Tortix, 4 Rush Veneer, 1 Wax Moth, 1 Amblyptilia acanthadactyla, 1 Small Blood-vein, 3 Light Emerald, 1 Flame Shoulder, 2 Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, 2 L-album Wainscot, 8 Flounced Rustics, 2 Silver Y, 1 Dark Spectacle and 2 Spectacle. A Vapourer the day before, plus 1 Yellow-barred Brindle and a Pearly Underwing. (Tim Hodge)

Tuesday 12th September 2006 Newington Thanet

35 species of macro and 16 of micro but nothing any more interesting than an Agriphila latistria. Other bits included 3 Silver Y, 1 Centre-barred Sallow, 1 Herald, 1 Caloptilia rufinpinnella, 2 Caloptilia syringella, 1 Gold Triangle and 1 Eudonia pallida. (Phil M)

Tuesday 12th September 2006 Dumpton Thanet

night of the 11th September 2006, I recorded my 3rd Convolvulus Hawkmoth for the garden this year to date also 2 Scarce Bordered Straw, 3 Silver Y's, 3 Rush Veneer,1 Dark Sword-Grass and good numbers of autumn species. (Gadget)

Monday 11th September 2006 Dumpton garden

Fairly quiet apart from the resident autumn species. L-album Wainscots are starting to appear in increasing numbers along with the odd Feathered Ranunculus. The 4th & 5th Convolvulus Hawk-moths have been recorded on 8th (feeding on Nicotiana at dusk) & 11th to the 250w MV trap. Other bits have been regular 2's & 3's of Scarce Bordered Straw many being particularly dark individuals. Bordered Straw singles on 7th and 9th plus a couple of Large Thorn and a lone Oak Hook-tip on the 8th. (Dylan)

Monday 11th September 2006 Newington Thanet

Slightly better overnight once again though nothing too exciting. The wall of the house and shed were peppered with Small Dusty Waves when I went out at 06.00am - and the total including the dozen or so in the 2 traps added up to 43 moths. Certainly the most I’ve ever had in the garden. Other bits of note included 1 Mullein Wave, 1 Cypress Pug, 2 Light Emerald, 3 Large
Thorn
, 1 Rosy Rustic, 2 Old Lady, 2 Centre-barred Sallow, 1 Acleris rhombana, 1 Prays fraxinella and 1 Agonopterix nervosa. (Phil M)

Sunday 10th September 2006 Westgate Thanet

Another Buttoned Snout today, following one here last month. Francis tells me that they are only the second and third Thanet records, and that the first was in Westbrook. Makes you wonder if there isn’t a little colony somewhere round here. I understand they feed on hops, so Dylan should be able to track them down blindfolded. A few other bits included 1 Large Fruit-tree Tortrix, 1 Rush Veneer, 1 Wax Moth, 1 Small Blood-vein, 3 Light Emerald, 1 Pearly Underwing, 2 L-album Wainscot, 1 Copper Underwing, 8 Flounced Rustic and 1 Snout. (Tim Hodge)

Sunday 10th September 2006 Newington Thanet

Slightly better overnight as the stiff north or easterly wind had stopped for the first time in quite a few nights. In the traps there were 2 Large Thorn, 1 Oak Hook-tip, 1 Mottled Rustic, 2 Scarce Bordered Straw, 2 Centre Barred Sallow, 1 Meal Moth and 1 fresh as a daisy Small Magpie. Very late for Small Magpie in my garden? Very little else of late though I did catch 2 Scarce Bordered Straws and a third generation Ruby Tiger on the 6th and a rare second generation Varied Coronet on the 5th. (Phil M)

Saturday 9th September 2006 Westcliff Moth Trap

Night of 8/9 September. Cool and clear last night so very few moths in the trap. However, whilst tidying up the balcony I noticed a lone moth resting on the handle of a wood-chopping axe! It turned out to be a beautiful Feathered Gothic, a species I'd not seen before and a most welcome addition to the garden moth list. (Dave B)

Saturday 9th September 2006 Dumpton Thanet

Hummingbird Hawkmoth in the Garden this afternoon, it appeared as if it was dead just laying on one of the plants then just as I was photographing it, it flew away up and over the fields, (Gadget)

Saturday 9th September 2006 Westgate Thanet

Slightly better than last night, which was dire. Best bits were a Small Blood-vein, 1 Red Underwing, 1 Old Lady, 1 Orange Swift, 3 Rush Veneer, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw and 3 Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing. (Tim Hodge)

Thursday 7th September 2006 Westcliff Moth Trap

Night of 6/7 September. Another clear and warm night with roughly the same mix of moths. New for me was my first Feathered Ranunculus which was rather nice. A total of 5 Scarce Bordered Straw was up though other migrants were conspicuous by their absence. A concerted sugaring effort in the Westcliff area by Phil, Katiw, James and myself turned up an Old Lady, a couple of Copper Underwings and little else. (Dave B)

Thursday 7th September 2006 Westgate Thanet

A few bits in my garden overnight included a Webb’s Wainscot, 1 Spectacle, 1 Diamond-backed, 1 Oegoconia quadripuncta, 1 Phlyctaenia coronata, 1 Wax Moth, 12 Small Dusty Waves, 2 Hummingbird Hawk Moths, 65 Large Yellow Underwings, 2 Old Ladies, 2 Scarce Bordered Straws and 2 Silver Y. (Tim Hodge)

Wednesday 6th September 2006 Westcliff Moth Trap

Night of 5/6 September. Another warm night and another disappointing catch with even lower numbers of the more common species. A fresh Small Blood-vein was my best moth, along with Large Thorn and yet another Short-cloaked Moth. Very few migrants with single Scarce Bordered Straw and Dark Sword-grass, a couple of Silver Y and 4 Rush Veneer. (Dave B)

Tuesday 5th September 2006 Westcliff Moth Trap

Night of 4/5 September. In spite of warm and favourable conditions last nights catch wasn't up to much. By far the best moth was my first Archer's Dart. Otherwise another Galium Carpet and a Short-cloaked Moth. Few migrants with a couple each of Silver Y and Scarce Bordered Straw, though 10 Rush Veneer was up. (Dave B)

Tuesday 5th September 2006 Pegwell Bay

A few species of moth on the 'gloop' (sugar/beer solution) overnight including these 2 Red Underwings on one of the trees near the car park. Other things included Old Lady, Square Spot Rustic, Large Yellow Underwing, Common Wainscot, Cabbage Moth, Mouse Moth etc. (Phil M)

Tuesday 5th September 2006 Newington Thanet

A disappointing catch given the conditions - but still more than the average early September catch. I was hoping for a migrant or two but had to make do with 2 Scarce Bordered Straw, 2 Diamond Back's, 2 Rush Veneer, 3 Silver Y's, 1 Dark Sword-grass and the only half decent migrant I took - a Small Mottled Willow was lying dead in the bottom of one of the traps. No doubt it had been nabbed by the ants? Non-migrant 'bits' highlights were 1 Large Thorn, 1 Vapourer, 2 Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, 1 Centre-barred Sallow, 1 Wax Moth and another Nephoterix angustella. I also took 4 Old Lady's - 2 on the 'gloop', 1 sitting on the fence and 1 in the trap. (Phil M)

Monday 4th September 2006 Westcliff Moth Trap

Night of 3/4 September. With less wind sweeping across the balcony I was hopeful for a decent haul of moths last night. Numbers were not particularly impressive but diversity was somewhat better than of late. Best was a White Ermine, followed by Short-cloaked Moth and Galium Carpet. Migrants were in short supply with single Dark Sword-grass and Scarce Bordered Straw. (Dave B)

Monday 4th September 2006 Newington Thanet

Lots of moths overnight (52 species of macro) though the bulk of the 500+ moths were made up of Large Yellow Underwing (136) and Vine's Rustic. (119) Top moth garden wise was a Lesser Wax Moth - only my 2nd ever
garden record though I did get another Crescent, which is a far nicer moth. Other 'bits' included 1 Currant Pug, 1 Toadflax Pug, 1 White Spotted Pug, 1 Large Thorn, 1 Sharp-angled Peacock, 1 Chinese Character, 1 Campion and 1 Marbled Green. Migrant species were 3 Diamond Back's, 4 Rush Veneer, 3 Dark Sword-grass and 5 Silver Y. (Phil M)

Monday 4th September 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Kingsgate night of 3/9. Only 227 Large Yellow Underwings last night, a lot less than the last few nights but still far too many. Good numbers of the other standard junk Noctuids and more Geos of late but only the usual suspects - Blood-veins, Small Dusty Waves, Yellow-barred Brindles etc. A nice Hedya salicella is noteworthy for the site and a Laburnum Leaf-miner is rather late - at least for here. A reasonable selection of migrants with single Convolvulus and Striped Hawks, Cosmopolitan, Dark Sword grass, Pearly Underwing and 4 Scarce Bordered Straws plus a sprinkling of Rush Veneers and Rusty Dots. Pegwell probably suffered from the initial breezy conditions with the only migrants being 4 Scarce Bordered Straws. There were some micros of moderate interest - Oncocera semirubella, Ebulea crocealis and Clepsis spectrana. (F Solly)

Sunday 3rd September 2006 Westgate Thanet

Night of 2nd September, It may have windy last night, but it didn’t stop 173 Large Yellow Underwings infesting my trap. Little else of interest, with 1 Wax Moth, 1 L-album Wainscot, 65 Vine’s Rustics, 5 Silver Y, 1 Light Emerald and 1 Dark Spectacle. I caught a thick-set looking Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing type, and wonder whether it might be a Langmaid’s, but I suspect probably not. I’ll show it to the hairy one to see what he thinks. (Tim Hodge)

Sunday 3rd September 2006 Westcliff Moth Trap

Night of 2nd September. Way too breezy for my trap last night and thus few moths to sort through this morning. However, there was a Cosmopolitan and a Scarce Bordered Straw amongst the regular fare. (Dave B)

Sunday 3rd September 2006 Newington Thanet

Night of the 2nd September. A good catch of moths numbers-wise but little to get the pulse racing.2 Scarce Bordered Straw, 1 Dark Sword-grass, 2 Rush Veneer, 1 Rusty Dot, 7 Silver Y, 1 Latticed Heath, 1 Pyrausta despicata and 1 Nephoterix angustella being the highlights. Large Yellow
Underwings
were up to 113 and Vine's Rustic 92 overnight plus a 2nd generation Mottled Rustic – an unusual moth to my garden traps. (Phil M)

Saturday 2nd September 2006 Westcliff Moth Trap

Night of 1st September. A bit breezy overnight but mild. Fewer moths than of late with slightly less variety. Highlight was a nice Orange Sallow. Otherwise three Scarce Bordered Straw and two Rush Veneer. (Dave B)

Saturday 2nd September Dumpton garden

Night of Friday 1st September, The appearance of an immaculate Poplar Hawk-moth was a most unexpected highlight of a rather dour night. 3 Scarce Bordered Straw were the only migrants of note whilst colour was provided by my first Bordered Beauty of 2006. (Dylan)

Saturday 2nd September 2006 Newington Thanet

Lots of moths overnight (400+ macro's of 50 species plus about 20 micro sp) the highlights being 1 Currant Pug, 5 Light Emerald, 1 Large Thorn, 1 Least Yellow Underwing, 1 Nutmeg, 1 Old Lady, 1 Straw Underwing, 1
Crescent and 2 Pyrausta despicata. Migrant species were: 3 Diamond Back's, 3 Rush Veneer, 1 Silver Y, 2 Dark Sword Grass and 3 Scarce Bordered Straw. 80+ of both Large Yellow Underwing and Vine's Rustic. (Phil M)

Friday 1st September 2006 Dumpton Thanet

Night of 31st August 2006, Humming-bird Hawkmoth the 1st one ever to go into my trap, accompanied with plenty of common species mostly Large Yellow Underwings, Vines Rustic and Common Wainscot. (Gadget)

Friday 1st September 2006 Newington Thanet

Night of 31/08 - lots of moths overnight as the temperature seemed to hold throughout the night. Noteworthy stuff included - 1 Small Waved Umber, 1 Bordered Pug, 1 Currant Pug, 1 Latticed Heath, 1 Vapourer, 1 Broad Bordered Yellow Underwing, 1 Least Yellow Underwing, 2 Scarce Bordered Straw, 2 Old Lady, 1 Red Underwing, 1 Pyrausta despicata, 1 Pyla fusca and 1Eudonia pallida. The Pyla fusca was a new Pyralid for the garden traps. A few bits of late common stuff included singles of Buff Ermine, Flame, Phlyctaenia coronata and Spindle Ermine. Numbers of common moths were still high with 33 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 88
Large Yellow Underwing, 84 Vine's Rustic and 27 Common Wainscot. (Phil M)

Friday 1st September 2006 Westgate Thanet

Night of 31/08 134 Large Yellow Underwings last night. Yuk. A few bits included a Centre-barred Sallow, a Wax Moth, 2 Old Ladies, a Spindle Ermine, a Rush Veneer, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw, 2 Yellow-barred Brindles and a Dark Spectacle. (Tim Hodge)
