Newington Ramsgate
Even though one of the bulbs conked out
overnight in one of the traps I was surprised to find
only one macro moth in the trap that actually worked. Even
more surprising was that the moth was a Golden Twin-spot
... my eight garden record and the first since 2005. (Phil

Not very many moths in the garden traps
- singles of Rusty Dot, November Moth and
Scarce Bordered Straw the only things of any note. The
Rusty Dot is only the second one I've taken all year I
think? (Phil M)

In the past few days a little better with November Moth, Mallow,
Feathered Thorn, Blair's Shoulder, Knot Sallow, Clancy
Rustic, Grey Pine Carpet and a Setaceous Hebrew
Character. (Gadget)

I only had three macros in the trap last
night. They were Mallow, White Point & Scarce Bordered
Straw. (Claire W)
Saturday 24th October 2009 Eastry
Something to brighten up a rainy day,
and two new moths in the trap for me too. A single Streak
and a couple of Feathered Thorn, along with Red-
and Yellow-line Quaker, November Moth, Brick and a
Vine's Rustic. Twenty macros of thirteen species.. I'm
happy! (Bill Martin)
Wednesday 21st October 2009 Eastry
All things being relative, a minor moth
fest this morning. Double figures for the first time for
weeks after the rain last night. First for the season three
fresh Merveille du Jour, together with a first autumn
Grey Shoulder-knot. Another Green-brindled
Crescent, couple of Brick and a nice Angle
Shades. Thirty two macros of thirteen species, a very
welcome little haul. (Bill Martin)

Ramsgate
There were a surprising amount of moths
in the garden traps overnight. Nothing too exciting but
there were 4 Mallows which is a staggering amount for
my place. I've caught less in some whole years I think?
Otherwise 2 Acleris sparsana, 1 Common
Marbled Carpet, 1 Shuttle Shaped Dart, 6 Large
Yellow Underwing, 7 Lesser Yellow Underwing, 3
Blair's Shoulder Knot, 1 Feathered Ranunculus, 7
Lunar Underwing, 1 Sallow and 1 Dusky Lemon
Sallow. Also of note is that Ben Lewis found a fully
grown Convolvulus Hawk Moth caterpillar near the
toilet block in Pegwell car park the other day. (Phil M)
Tuesday 13th October 2009 Pegwell
Trap
Night of 12/10. A better night than I was expecting and
for Thanet a reasonable selection of autumnal species at
Pegwell that included; Scarce Umber, 4 Turnips
(a good count this year!), 1 Green-brindled Crescent,
Dark Chestnut, 2 Barred Sallow, 2 Dusky-lemon
Sallow, 1 Large Wainscot and a late Straw Dot.

Sunday
11th October 2009 Newington Ramsgate
I did catch some moths overnight many
of which were far too boring to write out here. I'd just be
wasting your time? The more interesting 'bits' included
singles of Clepsis consimilana, Mallow,
Red-line Quaker and yet another Beaded Chestnut
- my fourth of the autumn. Okay - I'll admit none of these
moths are really properly 'interesting' - especially the
tortrix. You have to make do with meagre scrapings when you
run a trap in a Thanet back garden during autumn of course.

Ramsgate
Overnight here in outer space (nowhere
near the real world) there were a few bits - the non-nightly
stuff being 1 Acleris rhombana, 2 Diamond
Back's, 1 Spruce Carpet and 2 Beaded Chestnuts.
I also have a large unusual looking Oecophoridae
- I'm not yet sure of its identity. No doubt you'll all be
pulling your hair out in tense anticipation until I finally
get around to identifying it? Don't worry Dyl - I'll ring
you as soon as I find out what it is as I know you'll be
super interested - I don't want your old ticker going whilst
you wait? (Phil M)

Lunch time today a
Hummingbird Hawkmoth was feeding on flowers in the
Garden, moths from last night were poor but did record
Mallow, 3 Diamond Back Moths, 1 L-album
Wainscot, Blair's Shoulder Knot, 2 Luna Underwings
and 4 Feather Ranunculus. (Gadget)

October 2009 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps
Night of 8/10. Kingsgate was
blown out and produced very little. More than a was
expecting at Pegwell, the pick of which was a Merveille
du Jour (a far nicer specimen than that of the Newington
lard). Other bits included 1 Red-green Carpet, 2
Mallow, 1 Common Marbled Carpet, 1 Spruce
Carpet, 1 Lesser Treble-bar, 1 White-point,
1 Brick, 1 Dusky-lemon Sallow, 2 Barred
Sallow and 1 Clancy's Rustic. After such
excitement, I had to rejoin the 'real world'! (F Solly)
Thursday
8th October 2009 Pegwell & Kingsgate Traps
Night of 7/10. Heavy rain and an onshore wind, Kingsgate
was appalling. More moths at Pegwell than I was expecting
but nothing to get excited about. 3 Mallows, 1
Dusky-lemon Sallow, 3 Barred Sallow and 1
Large Wainscot bearly cut the mustard as interesting
moths. ------- Night of 6/10. Finally some migrants! Amongst
the hoards of Craneflies at Pegwell was a Blair's Mocha,
2 Pearly Underwings and a Dark Sword-grass.
Despite the ridiculously warm night, resident species
remained unremarkable, Red-green Carpet,
Dusky-lemon Sallow and Barred Sallow was about as
interesting as it got. Kingsgate only had singles of
Pearly Underwing and Dark Sword-grass. (F Solly)

Westgate Thanet
Westgate moths, surely there aren’t any,
you say. Well, yes, you’re right, especially when I don’t
run my traps. But I have had them on over the past 3 nights
and I caught a scarce moth last night, a Madder Pearl,
Mecyna asinalis. I’m told that it’s about the 10th
Kent record, but old Hairy wants to see it so I’m guessing
it’s a new one for Thanet. Other bits have included a
Barred Sallow, Mallow, Clancy’s Rustic, 2 Silver Ys,
2 Angle Shades, a Rush Veneer, up to 3
Lunar Underwing and 3 Blair’s Shoulder Knot and
up to 8 Feathered Ranunculus. (Tim H)

A slightly better catch was had
overnight in the milder conditions. Not too much quality of
course the highlights being 3 Diamond Back's, late
specimens of Cochylis hybridella and
Endotricha flammealis plus singles of Pearly
Underwing, Sallow and Barred Sallow. (Phil
