Moths in the
garden traps overnight included 1 Oak Nycteoline, 1 Large
Yellow Underwing, 1 Lesser Yellow Underwing, 3 Angle
Shades and 7 Blair's Shoulder-knot. (Phil M)

Rather meagre
pickings overnight. The total catch was a rather 'dull' 2 Blair's
Shoulder-knot, 2 Feathered Ranunculus, 1 Setaceous
Hebrew Character, 2 Angle Shades, 2 Lunar Underwing
and a single Brick. Mind you not that Brick is a 'dull'
moth for my back garden as it's the first one I've caught in about
three years which is ridiculous. (Phil M)

October 2008 Newington Thanet
I was surprised to
many moths the past two nights the temperature had dropped so low
but overnight amongst a surprising amount of moths there were
singles of Green-brindled Crescent and a scarcity in the
shape of a Pink-barred Sallow - only my second ever capture
in the garden. The previous night I took a few bits that included
Barred Sallow and a Red-line Quaker. (Phil M)

October 2008 Newington Thanet
A few bits came to
the MV lights overnight including 1 Mallow, 1 Feathered
Thorn, 2 Green-brindled Crescent and a garden rarity in
the shape of an Oak Lutestring. It's been very poor for moths
recently with very little of any interest whatsoever. (Phil M)

Thanet
I’ve actually turned my trap on for the last 2
nights. Must have come over all queer. I can report a Clancy’s
Rustic, a Caloptilia rufipennella, a
Diamond-backed Moth and a Red-green Carpet, which
surprisingly (or not?) was new for my garden, plus a few regular
bits including 4 Feathered Ranunculus. (Tim H)

October 2008 Newington Thanet
Of the moths in
traps overnight singles of Large Wainscot and Sallow
were the pick of the bunch. There were also 8 Lunar Underwings
which is just about as many as it's possible to get in my back
garden nowadays (Phil M)

October 2008 Beltinge
Night of 10/10 -
still the small trickle of migrants continues with a Delicate
last night. Other bits included Silver Y, 4 Clancy's
Rustic, 2 Sallow, 2 Mallow and a scattering of the
usual stuff. (Barry H)
Friday 10th October 2008 Garden Minster Thanet
Around lunchtime my attention was drawn to bright
orange moths flying around some plants. They were Vapourer Moth
males attracted to a newly emerged female; one of the males had already
mated with the female. First photo shows a male moth, the second the
wingless female with mating male behind, the third is of the female laying
eggs on the plant stem. What a life the female emerges from her cocoon
emitting pheromones males appear almost instantly and one mates with her,
after that she stays on that same stem and lays all her eggs around her then
dies, that's evolution! Also in the garden today two Hummingbird
Hawkmoths feeding on Salvia flowers. (Don Wilks)
Thursday 9th October 2008 Beltinge
Night of 9/10 - second Dewick's Plusia
of the autumn was the best moth in the trap, not much else
Mallow, Black Rustic, Deep-brown Dart, Blair's Shoulder Knot, Silver
Y and Sallow made up the numbers. (Barry H)
Thursday 9th October 2008 Pegwell Trap
Night of
8/10. Cool, clear and damp, a lot less moffs last night. A Golden
Twin-spot was the highlight at Pegwell, where there was also
Oak Lutesting, Autumnal Rustic and Feathered Brindle all
of which are of local interest. My garden was abysmal - consistency
is nice and there was nothing of note at Kingsgate. (F Solly)

During one of my
many recce missions outside to check the back garden moth traps I
found a nice male Four-spotted Footman clinging to the shed
wall. After potting it up and putting it in the fridge I immediately
went back outside and found another one sitting on the other trap
too! This one was another male. The early night temperatures dropped
off quite early and things slowed down to a standstill soon after
unfortunately. Other bits amongst a varied catch of 25+ species
included singles of Diamond Backed-moth, Rusty Dot,
Rush Veneer, Clancy's Rustic and Herald. The two
previous nights had shown little other than high numbers of
Lesser Yellow Underwing (46 on the 6th) though I did get singles
of Sallow, Red-line Quaker and Dusky Lemon Sallow.

Tuesday 7th October 2008 Kingsgate &
Pegwell Traps
Night of 6/10. Slightly more interesting last night - it didn't
take much. A Scarce Bordered Straw and Delicate at
Kingsgate were the only migrants. Other bits included 2 Mallows,
a late-ish Mullein Wave and a late Dark Spectacle.
Pegwell had a Gem, 2 Dark Sword-grass, 1 Scarce
Bordered Straw and 1 Palpita vitrealis. A better
selection amongst the residents that included; 1 Red-green Carpet,
1 Autumnal Rustic, 2 Green-brindled Crescent, 1
Dark Chestnut, 1 Beaded Chestnut, 2 Barred Sallow,
1 Dusky-lemon Sallow with late Burnished Brass and
Least Carpet. (F Solly)
Tuesday 7th October 2008 Beltinge
Night of 6/10 - a better night than of late
though nothing to get excited about Pink-barred Sallow, Barred
Sallow, 4 Mallow, 5 Silver Y, Light Emerald, Feathered
Thorn and a Large Wainscot were the better moths. (Barry
H)
Monday 6th September 2008 Pegwell trap
Night of
5/10. The wind finally dropped during the night, a few more moths in
the Pegwell trap than of late although nothing of any note. Singles
of Mallow, Black Rustic, Green-brindled Crescent, Red-line Quaker
and Sallow with 26 L-album Wainscots were amongst the
usual dross. The rather unexciting micros were Acleris
schalleriana, variegana and sparsana, Eudonia angustea,
LBAM, Phyllonorycter messaniella and Emmelina
monodactyla. (F Solly)

Thursday 2nd
October 2008 Newington Thanet
Very few moths in
the traps overnight after the first really cool night of the autumn.
I did catch a nice Red Underwing - otherwise nothing more
exciting that 2 Lunar Underwing, 1 Blair's Shoulder-knot
and a Burnished Brass amongst very low numbers of other
common species. I did also catch another Sallow on the last
day of last month. (Phil M)
