Friday 26th October 2007 Beltinge

Finally the annoying easterly wind begins to abate resulting in a few moths last night which included a Delicate, 2 Silver Y, 3 Rusty Dots, a Mallow, a Shuttle-shaped Dart and a Green-brindled Crescent. (Barry Hunt)

Thursday 25th October 2007 Newington Thanet

It was 'slightly' warmer out there overnight and there were four macro moths spread between the 2 moth traps - singles of Lesser and Large Yellow Underwing, L-album Wainscot and a Red-line Quaker. (Phil M)

Tuesday 23rd October 2007 Newington Thanet

Very few moths overnight though I was surprised to find a Nettle-tap sitting in the light of one of the traps overnight. The only other captures were singles of Large Yellow Underwing and Blair's Shoulder-knot. Very little going on at all this past week - only a few Delicates of note, (Phil M)

Monday 22nd October 2007 Pegwell Trap

Night of 21/10.  Very poor conditions for mothing the last few nights, only one moth in the Pegwell Trap last night, a Convolvulus Hawkmoth - how bizarre is that? (F Solly)

Tuesday 16th October 2007 Beltinge

I have not contributed for a while now, based on the fact that their, has not been a lot to contribute. The last couple of nights have seen a slight improvement here. 6 Delicates, 1 Dark Sword-grass, 4 Silver Y, 10 Diamond-backs, 8 Rusty Dots and a Pearly Underwing on the migrant front. Reasonable resident species have included Merveille du Jour, Brindled Green, 2 Red-green Carpets, 4 Mallows, Sallow, 2 Red-line Quakers, 4 Large Wainscots and a Dark Chestnut. The site name has been changed to Bishopstone as being only 30yds from the Glen a few locals have pondered the question “Why Beltinge?”   (Barry Hunt)

Monday 15th October 2007 Newington Thanet

Not very many moths in the traps overnight so I was surprised to find a rarity - a Cydia amplana when I opened the second of 2 very sparse moth traps.  A few other migrants included 2 Rusty Dots and a Pearly Underwing.  (Phil M)

Sunday 14th October 2007 Newington Thanet

Not much of a catch overnight though a nice fresh Yellow-line Quaker turned up so not exactly a waste of time. Otherwise, 3 Mallow, 1 Acleris sparsana etc, and an extremely late Phlyctaenia coronata was a surprising find in one of the traps. (Phil M)

Saturday 13th October 2007 Pegwell Trap

Night of 12/10.  32 species of macro moth in the Pegwell trap - which is very good for Thanet at this time of year. Top billing went to a cracking Merveille du Jour - very rarely recorded on the Concrete Isle. A good selection of the autumnal species which included; 3 Mallows, 1 November Moth, 1 Feathered Thorn, 1 Vapourer, 1 Green-brindled Crescent, 1 Brick, 1 Dark Chestnut, 1 Beaded Chestnut, 2 Barred Sallows, 1 Sallow, 1 Dusky-lemon Sallow and 1 Clancy's Rustic. There were several 'late' species with singles of Chinese Character, Mullein Wave and Phlyctaenia coronata. A scattering of migrants with 1 Dark Sword-grass, 2 Delicate, 1 Silver Y, 2 Rusty Dots and 3 Diamond-backs. (F Solly)

Saturday 13th October 2007 Newington Thanet

A few moths overnight included a nice Spruce Carpet - otherwise 17 species of common stuff including a massive haul of migrants - 3 Diamond Back's,3 Rusty Dots and a Silver Y. Portland will be pulling their hair out when they hear about this catch eh? Other than a couple of Delicates the past few nights I've taken absolutely nothing of any note.  (Phil M)

Thursday 11th October 2007 Foreness area

A Hummingbird Hawk moth was feeding on geranium flowers in a garden in Northumberland Ave this afternoon. (Rae Boulden)

Wednesday 10th October 2007 Newington Thanet

Evidence of a little migration in the traps overnight with 6 Diamond Back's, 1 Rusty Dot, 1 Silver Y and a Delicate amongst the other autumnal stuff still on the wing. Top moth went to the Red Green Carpet I found clinging to the Perspex in trap 1 - an ambition realised as it's taken me many years to actually get one in the garden. All things come to those - etc.    (Phil M)

Wednesday 9th October 2007 Fisher's Estuarine Moth

Night of the 8/10/2007. It was a mild and cloudy evening. Tim had earlier in the year expressed a desire to see Fisher's Estuarine Moth. We (myself, Gadget and Tim) decided to have a look at one on the Kentish colonies. Despite protestations from Tim, he was twitching. We arrived at the location with the intention of checking it's, food plant - Hogs Fennel by torchlight. They typically just sit around and are easily found by their eyes shining orange in the light. Myself and Gadget with torches and Twitchier Tim without (!) though Gadget was able to provide him with a torch that was slightly less bright than a lighted cigarette. Despite that minor setback, we found the first moth straight away on just about the first Hogs Fennel and in a short space of time had seen 20+ of the impressive critters - all in very good condition. (F Solly)

Saturday 6th October 2007 Westgate Thanet

A Palpita vitrealis last night, which was a new one for my garden. Also a Delicate, a Silver Y and 3 Diamond-backs, plus a couple of Clancy’s the night before, otherwise rather quiet. (Tim H)

Friday 5th October 2007 Newington Thanet

Quite cool overnight and not too much going on. There were 6 Willow Beauty but otherwise numbers of moths were way down on what I have been catching. There were singles of Agonopterix alstromeriana and Acleris sparsana also 2 Blair's Shoulder-knot and a nice scale perfect Sallow along with all the other commoner autumnal stuff. (Phil M)

Wednesday 3rd October 2007 Pegwell Trap

Night of 2/10. More variety than of late in the Pegwell trap and a few more autumnal species, though nothing to write home about. Of slightly more note than the other residual dross were;  a late Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet, 1 Spruce Carpet, 1 Delicate, 1 Feathered Brindle, 1 Barred Sallow, 1 Sallow and 1 Dusky-lemon Sallow. (F Solly)

Wednesday 3rd October 2007 Dumpton Thanet

Night of 2/10 to 125MV Light 1 Spruce Carpet, Centre-barred Sallow, 1 Dusky-lemon Sallow, 4 Diamond Back's, 1 Blair's Shoulder-knot, 1 Black Rustic, 8 L-album Wainscot, 7 Feathered Ranunculus and a Frosted Orange from the night of the 1/10/2007 (Gadget)

Wednesday 3rd October 2007 Newington Thanet

Quite a few moths overnight as the temperature was extremely high for an easterly airflow. Top moth was another Frosted Orange - I caught one just over a week ago and that was a new moth for the garden. Hot on It's heels was my third Dusky Lemon Sallow of the autumn - that's more than I've ever taken in the garden. Other 'bits' included 4 Silver Y, 2 Diamond Back's, 1 Blair's Shoulder-knot and a Mallow.  (Phil M)

Wednesday 3rd October 2007 Westgate Thanet

My trap has been so bad recently that I haven’t run it a great deal, so it was amazing to have a few moths last night, with 102 moths of 29 species, including 1 Oak Nycteoline, 1 Green-brindled Crescent, 3 Clancy’s Rustics, 1 Delicate, 1 Pearly Underwing, 1 Dark Sword Grass, 5 Silver Y’s, 4 Diamond-backs, 1 Vapourer, 1 Black Rustic, 1 Blair’s Shoulder Knot, 11 L-album Wainscot, 8 Feathered Ranunculus, 1 Old Lady, 1 Red Admiral  butterfly and 3 Acleris sparsana. (Tim H)

Monday 1st October 2007 Newington Thanet

A surprising amount of moths in the back garden traps today. 17 species of macro moth and a few micro's included: 1 Rusty Dot,1 Silver Y,1 Burnished Brass,1 Red Underwing, 2 Clancy's Rustic, 1 Delicate and 1 Dusky Lemon Sallow. (Phil M)

Saturday 29th September 2007 Newington Thanet

Quite a nice selection of common moths after the strong northerly wind died off at last. Nothing too eventful of course - the pick of the bunch being singles of Vapourer, a late Ruby Tiger, Black Rustic, Blair's Shoulder-knot and a Clancy's Rustic. Most unusual of all, though a common moth earlier on in the year - was an extremely late flying Phlyctaenia coronata. 2 Acleris sparsana showed up too - my first of the autumn. (Phil M)
