Moth Nights with RSPB

Tuesday 31st October 2006 Westgate Thanet

A few bits last night included a Brick, 2 Large Wainscots, 2 Angle Shades, 3 Diamond-backs, 3 Lesser Yellow Underwings, 2 Rusty Dot Pearls, 2 Turnip Moths, 4 Blair's Shoulder Knots and 2 Silver Y. (Tim Hodge)

Tuesday 31st October 2006 Newington Thanet

A few bits and pieces made it into the traps overnight. The catch included 12 Rusty Dot, 2 Rush Veneer, 1 Diamond Back, 2 November Moth, 1 Gem, 1 Turnip, 1 Angle Shades, 5 Silver Y, 1 Large Wainscot and 1 Dark Sword-grass. The night previous was very quiet with only 4 macros and a handful of migrant Pyralids on show - though 2 of the macros were singles of Vestal and Yellow-line Quaker, which made up for the lack of numbers. Looks like it'll hard to get much moth-wise for the next night or two looking at the weather forecast - dammit!! (Phil M)

Sunday 29th October 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 28/29 October. Again, with mild conditions overnight, there were quite a few moths on the wing. Best here was a tardy Canary-shouldered Thorn. Migrants included 12 Silver Y, 16 Rusty-dot Pearl, 8 Rush Veneer and single of Palpita vitrialis, Dark Sword-grass and Pearly Underwing. Residents were a bit thin but included Feathered Thorn, Spruce Carpet, 4 November Moth and a Pale Mottled Willow. (Dave B)

Sunday 29th October 2006 Dumpton Thanet

Night of 28th October 2006, 3 Rush Veneer, 4 Rusty Dot, 1 November Moth, 1 Lesser Yellow Underwing, 1 Blair's Shoulder-knot and most surprising of all was Convolvulus Hawkmoth. (Gadget)

Sunday 29th October 2006 Newington Thanet

A little bit of migration hit my back garden at long last with a potential goodie turning up in the shape of a Small Marbled - a scarce migrant to Britain and a new moth to Thanet methinks? As the moth is extremely
late I will reserve judgment until old Hairy has a look but I'm sure that’s what it is. Other 'bits' included 1 Rush Veneer, 13 Rusty Dot, 5 Diamond Back's, 1 Common Marbled Carpet, 1 Gem, 1 November Moth, 1 Turnip, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw, 1 Angle Shades, 1 Silver Y, 2 Large Wainscot and 1 Blair's Shoulder-knot. The past couple of nights have been dire.   (Phil M)

Sunday 29th October 2006 Westgate Thanet

Nothing surprising, but the most moths I’ve had for 8 days, including 1 Monopis obviella, 6 Diamond-backs, 1 Acleris sparsana, 1 Rusty Dot Pearl, 1 Amblyptilia acanthadactyla, 1 Pearly Underwing, 1 Delicate, 1 Large Wainscot, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw and 2 Silver Y’s. (Tim Hodge)

Saturday 28th October 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 27/28 October. After a few days 'up north' it was good to return to a few decent moths on the balcony. Best was Blair’s Mocha, which was a first for the site. Other migrants included 8 Rush Veneer, 8 Rusty-dot Pearl, 10 Silver Y, 2 Dark sword-grass and single of Gem, Palpita vitrialis, Delicate and Pearly Underwing. Amongst the residents were Brick, Yellow-lined Quaker, 5 Acleris sparsana, 7 November Moth and a latish Double-striped Pug. (Dave B)

Friday 27th October 2006 Newington Thanet

Not very much going on overnight though I did get a Vestal, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw, 1 Large Wainscot and another Red-line Quaker (my eighth of the autumn) which would normally constitute a half decent night at this time of the year in a normal season. Other makeweight bits included 5 each of Rush Veneer and Rusty Dot plus 3 Diamond Backs, 1 Crosidesma plebejana and a Monopis obviella. (Phil M)

Thursday 26th October 2006 Newington Thanet

Things picked up slightly after a dodgy couple of nights previous. Not too many moths but I did get 5 Rush Veneer, 3 Rusty Dot, 3 Diamond Back's, 1 Crosidesma plebejana, 1 November Moth, 2 Lesser Yellow Underwing, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw, 1 Angle Shades, 2 Silver Y, 1 Sallow, 1 Red-line Quaker, 2 Large Wainscot and 1 Blair's Shoulder-knot. The most unusual moth I’ve taken recently was an extremely late Common Pug on the night of the 24th. (Phil M)

Thursday 26th October 2006 Dumpton Thanet

Night of 25th October 2006. nine species with 18 moths, 3 Silver Y, 5 Rusty Dot, 1 Rush Veneer, 3 Diamond Back's, 1 Dark Sword-grass,1 Pearly Underwings, 2 Angle Shades, 1 Blair's Shoulder-knot and 1 Palpita vitrealis (Gadget)

Night of 24th October 2006. Slightly more than the recent dreadful nights at Pegwell. 1 Red-green Carpet, 1 Mallow, 8 November Moths, 2 Pearly Underwings, 1 Delicate, 1 Cosmopolitan, 1 Satellite, 2 Angle Shades, 1 Large Wainscot, 1 Eudonia angustea, 12 Rusty Dots, 7 Rush Veneers, 1 Acleris sparsana and 2 Blastobasis lacticolella being the entire magnificent haul.  By contrast, the only moths at Kingsgate were single L-album Wainscot and Chestnut, 3 Rusty Dots and 3 Rush Veneers (F Solly)

Monday 23rd October 2006 KG IV Park & R/gate Cemetery

2 Hummingbird Hawkmoths at the bottom of Winterstoke steps in what seems to be a movement of Red Admirals with c50 all morning. (Craig S)

Monday 23rd October 2006 Winterstoke Steps Thanet

There were 2 Hummingbird Hawk-moths flying around the plants and chalk cliffs at the bottom of Winterstoke Steps in the mid-morning sunshine. (Dylan & Craig)

Sunday 22nd October 2006 Newington Thanet

16 species of moth overnight included 1 Rush Veneer, 1 Common Marbled Carpet, 1 Willow Beauty, 1 Gem, 2 Lesser Yellow Underwing, 1 Pale Mottled Willow, 2 Angle Shades, 1 Pearly Underwing, 1 Silver Y, 1 Delicate, 2 Large Wainscot and 2 Blair's Shoulder-knot. (Phil M)

Night of 21st October 2006. Five species but only 7 moths 1 Large Wainscot, 1 Silver Y, 1 Black Rustic, 1 Clancy’s Rustic and 3 Rusty Dot (Gadget)

Saturday 21st October 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 20th October 2006. The wind dropped but for one night only it would seem. Unfortunately it caught the moths unawares. Residents at Kingsgate were, in Phil talk pants. 3 Large Wainscots being by far the best. Migrants were restricted to the usual suspects (they get very boring night after night). 1 Gem, 1 Dark Sword-grass, 3 Pearly Underwings, 6 Delicates, 2 Clancy's Rustics, 8 Scarce Bordered Straws, 2 Silver Y's, 5 Rusty Dots, 4 Rush Veneers and 2 Diamond Backs. Slightly more in the way of residents at Pegwell but nothing of note. Migrants were also rather predictable - 1 Pearly Underwing, 3 Delicates, 1 Clancy's Rustic, 1 Small Mottled Willow, 3 Scarce Bordered Straws, 4 Silver Y's, 10 Rusty Dots, 12 Rush Veneers, 1 Palpita vitrealis and 1 Diamond Back. By far the best moth was a Cypress Carpet - a long awaited first for Thanet. (F Solly)

Saturday 21st October 2006 Newington Thanet

Still a few moths turning up in the back garden traps. Overnight I stumbled across: 4 Rush Veneer, 1 Rusty Dot, 1 Diamond Back, 3 Common Marbled Carpet, 1 November Moth, 1 Large Yellow Underwing, 4 Lesser Yellow Underwing, 1 Lunar Underwing, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw, 2 Pearly Underwing, 1 Silver Y, 2 Large Wainscot and 2 Blair's Shoulder-knot. A few late flying common moths the past few nights have included Bright-line Brown-eye, Straw Dot, Common Carpet and Garden Carpet. (Phil M)

Friday 20th October 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 19th October 2006 It's becoming increasingly tiresome to do the 12 mile cycle ride prior to work to check blown out moth traps - with no sign of the wind easing. The residents at Kingsgate totalled an under-whelming 2 Blair's Shoulder knots and a Large Yellow Underwing. The migrants were 3 Delicates, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw, 1 Silver Y, another Golden Twin-spot, 3 Rusty Dots and 6 Rush Veneers. Pegwell was even worse with just singles of Delicate, Black Rustic, Silver Y and a Choreutis pariana (Apple Leaf Skeletonizer) 2 Rusty Dot and 3 Rush Veneer. (F Solly)

Friday 20th October 2006 Westgate Thanet

A few bits overnight included my first Green-brindled Crescent, 1 Delicate, 3 Scarce Bordered Straws, 4 Diamond-backs, 1 Rusty Dot Pearl, 1 Rush Veneer, 1 Black Rustic, 1 Lunar Underwing and 1 Large Wainscot. (Tim Hodge)

Wednesday 18th October 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 17th October 2006, Superb conditions overnight particularly given the time of year but as usual disappointing results. Resident species at Kingsgate were again in short supply. A selection of the usual migrant suspects - 1 Gem, 1 Dark Sword-grass, 3 Pearly Underwings, 4 Delicates, 4 Clancy's Rustics, 3 Scarce Bordered Straws, 7 Silver Y, 1 Palpita vitrealis, 3 Rusty Dots and 6 Rush Veneers.  A better selection of residents at Pegwell which included; 2 Mallows, 1 Spruce Carpet, 2 Grey Pine Carpet, 1 Red-green Carpet, 1 Yellow-line Quaker and 1 Caloptilia stigmatella (scarce on Thanet). Very few migrants with just 4 Scarce Bordered Straws, 3 Silver Y, 1 Palpita vitrealis, 7 Rusty Dots and 8 Rush Veneers. (F Solly)

Tuesday 17th October 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 16/10. Both traps suffered from the wind and produced very little. At Kingsgate, 2 Dark Sword grass, 1 Pearly Underwing, 1 Delicate and 1 Scarce Bordered Straw. Whilst Pegwell had 1 Dark Sword grass, 2 Delicate, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw and just 1 Silver Y. The only resident of note was a late Least Carpet. (F Solly)

Monday 16th October 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 15/10. Kingsgate trap was pretty much blown out and I was in two minds as to whether I could be bothered to go there. Insanity prevailed. The only resident species were singles of Lesser Yellow Underwing and Blair's Shoulder-knot. A surprising selection of migrants, which included the first Golden Twin-spot of the year. Other migrants were - 1 Convolvulus Hawk, 3 Dark Sword grass, 3 Pearly Underwing, 2 Delicates, 2 Scarce Bordered Straws and 2 Palpita vitrealis. Pegwell had slightly more shelter from the stiff breeze and had 1 Dark Sword-grass, 1 Pearly Underwing, 3 Delicates, 1 Small Mottled Willow, 2 Clancy's Rustic, 2 Scarce Bordered Straws, 15 Silver Y's, 2 Rusty Dots and 12 Rush Veneers.  Pick of the residents was a Brindled Green and a late Phlyctaenia coronata. (F Solly)

Back
, 9 Lesser Yellow Underwing, 1 Clancy's Rustic, 6 Silver Y, 4 Feathered Ranunculus and 2 Blair's Shoulder-knot. Poor compared to the night of the 14th (Gadget)

Monday 16th October 2006 Newington Thanet

A few moths overnight - mainly migrant species rather than late resident /autumn moths for once. Scouring the traps this morning turned up: 1 Rush Veneer, 1 Diamond Back, 1 Common Marbled Carpet, 1 Willow Beauty, 6 Lesser Yellow Underwing, 2 Clancy's Rustic, 1 Pale Mottled Willow, 9 Silver Y, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw and 2 Blair's Shoulder-knot. The previous night was quite poor in comparison to Tim, Gadget and Dave Beadle with only 11 species taken - the highlights of which were 1 Rusty Dot, yet another Red-line Quaker and 1 Dark-sword Grass. (Phil M)

Sunday 15th October 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 14/15 October. Another relatively quiet night enlivened only by a noticeable flush of Silver Y with 31 logged - the most I've seen since August! Other migrants included 2 Scarce Bordered Straw, 2 Rush Veneer, 2 Rusty-dot Pearl and single Clancy's Rustic, Dark Sword grass and Pearly Underwing. Very few resident species were caught. (Dave B)

Saturday 14th October 2006 Westcliff Thanet

(Tim Hodge)

Saturday 14th October 2006 Dumpton garden

Night of Friday 13th October 2006 (250w MV) The "migrant fest" continues, despite a very obvious change in wind direction. Amongst the usual autumn resident species I also recorded 2 Convolvulus Hawkmoth, 1 Gem, 1 Pearly Underwing, 1 White-point, 3 Rush Veneer, 1 Diamond-back, 2 Scarce Bordered Straw, 3 Clancy's Rustic, 11 Silver Y and 2 Delicate. Large Wainscot and 2 Blair's Shoulder-knot. After sending in yesterday’s news I found another Red-line Quaker sitting on the shed so I caught 3 the night before last. About 4 - 5 years worth in one night for my garden.     (Phil M)

Thursday 12th October 2006 Dumpton garden

Night of Wednesday 11th October 2006. Another night of migrant activity resulted in the, long awaited, first garden record of Palpita unionalis (vitrealis - for the "new-wave" mothing crowd) with a supporting cast of 2 Delicate, 7 Rush Veneer, 3 Scarce Bordered Straw, 2 Silver Y, 4 Rusty-dot Pearl, 1 Convolvulus Hawk-moth (11th garden record for 2006) and a pristine example of Large Wainscot. (Dylan)

Thursday 12th October 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 11th October 2006. By my standards there were quite a few moths in the trap last night with 17 species of macro being the best showing for some time. A few more migrants included 10 Silver Y, 2 Scarce Bordered Straw, Pearly Underwing, 2 Gem, 2 Rusty-dot Pearl, 5 Rush Veneer and a single Palpita vitrealis. Resident moths were fewer but included 12 Angle Shades, 2 Blair's Shoulder-knot, Black Rustic and Mallow. (Dave B)

Thursday 12th October 2006 Newington Thanet

A few 'bits' these past 2 nights. Top things were 2 Large Wainscot on the night of the 10th plus another one last night along with a nice pair of Red-line Quaker - quite rare moths to my garden in normal years. Tuesday 10th October 2006 Newington Thanet

I’ve been offline since the end of September though there’s not been too much to catch up with news wise. Overnight was slightly better with singles of Red-line Quaker, Large Wainscot, Delicate, Barred Sallow plus 5 Rush Veneer, 1 Diamond-backed, 1 Endtricha flammealis, 1 Orthopygia glaucinalis, 1 Carcina quercana and 1 very late Cochylis hybridella amongst a catch of 14 macro and 11 micro moths. Since the start of the month I’ve caught 2 other Barred Sallow, 1 Sallow, 3 Pearly Underwing, 3 Scarce Bordered Straw, 5 Clancy's Rustic, 1 Feathered Thorn and a Oak Lutestring amongst all the other more obvious autumnal moths. (Phil M)

Wednesday 4th October 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 3rd October 2006. A typical cool clear autumnal night and very few moths as a consequence. The only things of any note were the usual migrants - at Kingsgate, 4 Pearly Underwings, 3 Delicates and 3 Scarce Bordered Straws with a similar mix at Pegwell - 2 Pearly Underwing, 3 Delicates, 1 Clancy's Rustic, 2 Scarce Bordered Straws and 1 Silver Y.  (F Solly)

Wednesday 4th October 2006 Dumpton Thanet

Night of 3rd October 2006. the wind had moved around to the West and the temperature had dropped, only a few bits note worthy 1 Pearly Underwing,1 Clancy's Rustic,1 White point, and 1 Diamond-back Moth. (Gadget)

Tuesday 3rd October 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 2nd October. Well, at least the wind was much reduced but now we have cooler temperatures! So, again, rather few moths but a slightly better selection. New for the site was a Mallow. Otherwise a small selection of typical late flying species including Deep-brown Dart, Black Rustic, Blair's Shoulder-knot and Lunar Underwing. Migrants included singles of Delicate, Scarce Bordered Straw, Pearly Underwing, Rusty-dot Pearl and Diamond-back Moth. Rather late was a Brimstone. (Dave B)

Tuesday 3rd October 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 2nd October 2006. The wind dropped but with clear skies so did the temperature. The highlight at Kingsgate was an immaculate Merveille du Jour - a rare moth on Thanet. Little else amongst the few residents. A scattering of the usual migrant suspects with 1 Gem, 2 Convolvulus Hawks, 2 Dark Sword-grass, 4 Pearly Underwings, 3 Delicates, 2 Clancy's Rustics, 1 Small Mottled Willow, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw, 2 Silver Y's and 2 Rush Veneers. Very little at Pegwell, single Delicate and Scarce Bordered Straw were the only things of note. (F Solly)

Tuesday 3rd October 2006 Westgate Thanet

A few bits included 6 Diamond-backs, 1 Deep-brown Dart, 2 Rush Veneer, 5 Common Marbled Carpet, 2 Delicate, 4 L-album Wainscot, 1 Black Rustic, 4 Blair’s Shoulder Knot and 1 Angle Shades. (Tim Hodge)

Monday 2nd October 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Trap

Night of 1st October 2006. Very windy with frequent heavy showers - top conditions! Surprisingly a few migrants at Kingsgate although the same old stuff of course. Singles of Convolvulus Hawkmoth, Dark Sword-grass, Pearly Underwing, Delicate, Silver Y and 4 Rush Veneers. The very few resident species were not noteworthy. The more exposed Pegwell trap had even less with singles of Scarce Bordered Straw, Silver Y and 2 Rush Veneers the only migrants. Highlight here was a nice Frosted Orange - not very often encountered on Thanet these days. (F Solly)

Monday 2nd October 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 1st October. When will this evil wind ever stop! Again, way too breezy up here on the balcony but there was some compensation with my first Blair's Shoulder-knot for the site. Common but nice. Migrants involved single Pearly Underwing, Scarce Bordered Straw and Rusty-dot Pearl. (Dave B)

Monday 2nd October 2006 Westgate Thanet

It’s not taking long to do the trap these days, with only 42 moths of 17 species overnight. However, they included 2 Clancy’s Rustics, 2 Delicates, 2 Black Rustics, 1 Least Carpet, 4 Diamond-backs, 2 Common Marbled Carpets, 1 White-point and 2 Blair’s Shoulder Knots. (Tim Hodge)

Sunday 1st October 2006 Westgate Thanet

A few bits last night 30th September 2006 included a late Large Thorn, a Small Mottled Willow, my first Mallow, a Scarce Bordered Straw, 6 Diamond-backs, 1 Delicate and 2 Blair's Shoulder Knot. (Tim Hodge)

Sunday 1st October 2006 Westcliff Thanet

Night of 30th September 2006. Way too blustery for me to catch very much thought there was a Clancy's Rustic in the trap - my third of the autumn. Otherwise, the only migrant was a single Silver Y. Very little in the way of resident species. (Dave B)
