Moth Nights 2008

Sunday 30th November 2008 Kingsgate trap

Night of 29/11. An easterly wind overnight, so somewhat surprisingly there were single Brick and December Moth in the Kingsgate trap (F Solly)

Friday 28th November 2008 Newington Thanet

6 moths in the traps overnight, including the first macro's I've had since the latest blast of northerlies. They were - 2 Light Brown Apple Moths,1 White-shouldered House Moth,1 Feathered Thorn,1 Dark Chestnut and 1 Blair's Shoulder-knot. The night before I took virtually naff all - only a Light Brown Apple Moth, (Phil M)

Thursday 27th November 2008 Pegwell Trap

Night of 26/11. The wind dropped and straight away awash with moffs! Single Red-green Carpet, Lesser Yellow Underwing and Blair's Shoulder-knot and 5 LBAMs - well worth the effort. (F Solly)

Thursday 20th November 2008 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 19/11. Extreme excitement in the moff traps overnight. A December Moth was the sole visitor at Kingsgate, whilst at Pegwell there were single - November Moth, Feathered Thorn, Crocidosema plebejana and 5 LBAMs. Almost overwhelming, (F Solly)

Monday 17th November 2008 Newington Thanet

Just browsed the moth page and seeing as I hadn't 'reported in' since the 5th of the month I thought I'd better do so now or risk the wrath of Thanets first ever website owning midget. I'm still getting moths every night, though in very small numbers. Some silly bits still on the wing in this mild weather were having lately - last night I caught a Caloptilia specie (it's a rufipennella or an elongella - I forgot to check it, it's in the fridge) plus a Brown House Moth, which is ridiculously late for here. On the night of the 13th I had my latest ever garden date for Shuttle-shaped Dart and even sillier was an Archips podana on the night of the 15th! I’ve never caught one any later than September in past years. I've also taken 1 - 2 Mottled Umbers on 5 dates (which is by far the most ever) plus only my second ever sighting of Scarce Umber on the night of the 12th. Otherwise the occasional Large and Lesser Yellow Underwing, Silver Y, Angle Shades, Dark Sword-grass, Blair's Shoulder-knot, Feathered Thorn, November Moth, Blastobasis decolorella (or whatever they call them nowadays?) plus Crocidosema plebejana's on 3 dates is noteworthy for here too. I know it's dull - but it's November 'and' in Thanet. I might even have to start doing some birding soon? Now that is getting desperate. Tatty bye. (Phil M)

Friday 14th November 2008 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 13/11. The fun just doesn't end in the moff traps, how lucky am I? At Kingsgate, 1 Feathered Thorn, 1 Brick, 1 Satellite, 1 Silver Y, 1 Diamond-back, 2 Acleris sparsana and 6 LBAM. More at Pegwell, as has been the way recently - 1 Mallow, 2 November Moth, 1 Feathered Thorn, 1 Scarce Umber (they really are scarce on Thanet), 1 Brick, 2 Dark Chestnut, 1 Chestnut, 1 Oak Nycteoline, 29 LBAMs, 1 Crocidosema plebejana, 1 Blastobasis lacticolella, 1 Amblyptilia acanthadactyla and 1 Emmelina monodactyla (F Solly)

Friday 14th November 2008 Monkton Thanet

A Hummingbird Hawkmoth in the Monkton garden this morning. The first of the year, incredibly. (Dave M)

Wednesday 12th November 2008 Pegwell Trap

Night of 11/11. Still very exciting in the moff traps! 1 Red-green Carpet, 1 November Moth, 1 Feathered Thorn, 1 Blair's Shoulder-knot, 6 Bricks, 1 Dark Chestnut, 1 Angle Shades and 1 Silver Y. The little blighters were represented by a few LBAMs, 1 Acleris sparsana and 1 Acleris schalleriana (F Solly)

Wednesday 5th November 2008 Newington Thanet

Still a few bits coming too the MV's overnight which included: 2 Acleris sparsana,1 Mottled Umber,1 Willow Beauty,1 Turnip,1 Lesser Yellow Underwing,1 Blair's Shoulder-knot,1 Angle Shades etc. The Willow Beauty was a very late specimen for my garden. (Phil M)

Wednesday 5th November 2008 Pegwell Trap

Night of 4/11. A slightly different mix at Pegwell last night, 1 Mallow, 3 Red-green Carpet, 3 November Moths, 4 Feathered Thorns, 8 Mottled Umbers, 1 Dark Sword-grass, 1 Delicate, 2 Blair's Shoulder-knot, 2 Brick, 1 Dark Chestnut, 1 Barred Sallow, 1 Acleris sparsana, 10 LBAMs and 1 Emmelina monodactyla (F Solly)

Wednesday 5th November 2008 Dumpton Thanet

Another good night in the garden trap 3 Feathered Thorns, 4 Silver Y's, 1 Mottled Umber, 1 Angle Shades,1 Spruce Carpet, another Redline Quaker, 1 November Moths and 3 Diamond Back Moths. (Gadget)

Tuesday 4th November 2008 Pegwell Trap

Night of 3/11. A respectable selection of moffs in the Pegwell trap for the Concrete Isle at this time of year; although unfortunately nothing of note. 1 Mallow, 1 Red-green Carpet, 6 November Moths, 2 Feathered Thorns, 1 Mottled Umber, 1 Turnip, 2 Large Yellow Underwing, 1 Lesser Yellow Underwing, 1 L-album Wainscot, 5 Blair's Shoulder-knot, 2 Green-brindled Crescent, 1 Brick, 1 Yellow-line Quaker, 1 Clancy's Rustic, 1 Pale Mottled Willow and 2 Silver Y. The 'best' bits, 1 Caloptilia rufipennella, 1 Phyllonorycter messaniella, 6 Diamond-backs, 1 Blastobasis lacticolella, 33 LBAMs and 2 Crocidosema plebejana. (F Solly)

Tuesday 4th November 2008 Newington Thanet

Moths overnight included: 2 Acleris sparsana, 1 Blastobasis decolorella, 1 November Moth, 2 Mottled Umber and 2 Blair's Shoulder-knot. The night previous I took a Large Yellow Underwing and a Dark Sword-grass.     (Phil M)

Tuesday 4th November 2008 Dumpton Thanet

Moths overnight, 1 Blair's Shoulder-knot,1 Green-brindled Crescent, 1 Silver Y,1 Clancy Rustic, 1 Redline Quaker, 2 Diamond Backed Moths and 7 Light-brown Apple Moths. (Gadget)

Monday 3rd November 2008 Pegwell Trap

Night of 2/11. A whole raft of moffs in the Pegwell trap - 1 Common Marbled Carpet, 3 November Moths, 1 Feathered Thorn, 1 Large Yellow Underwing, 2 Blair's Shoulder-knot, 1 Brick, 1 Large Wainscot, 8 LBAMs and 1 Crocidosema plebejana (F Solly)

Sunday 2nd November 2008 Pegwell Trap

Night of 1/11. The moffs were off to a flyer for the new month. A real dilemma as to which tray to look at next, 1 Feathered Thorn, 1 Green-brindled Crescent and 2 Silver Ys (F Solly)

Sunday 2nd November 2008 Newington Thanet

A few macro moths for the first night in a while overnight as singles of Mottled Umber, Brick and Angle Shades came to the Mv's. Anything's worth looking at in November in a concrete back garden miles from any habitat, so I even counted the micros which were: 1 White -shouldered House Moth, c12 Light-brown Apple Moths, 5 Emmelina monodactyla and a Eudonia angustea. I know... boring? You're lucky to get anything at all after today’s Grand Prix - I almost had a heart attack during the last two nights of the Interlagos race! Mind you it probably would have done you lot out there in cyber land a favour in the long run? You're still stuck with my ramblings I'm afraid. (Phil M) (Gutted for Massa)

Sunday 2nd November 2008 Dumpton Thanet

Only three Moths in the trap from last night 1 Luna Underwing and two Silver Y’s but the trap will stay on so to keep the garden lit up, (Gadget)
