Thursday 26th May 2011 Pegwell Trap
Night of 25/5. Although clear for virtually the whole of the night it was
relatively mild. It was however the usual bitter disappointment in the moth
traps with little other than the usual junk Noctuids plus a few more largely
uninteresting micros. The only things of note were at Pegwell – singles of
Argyresthia cupressella and a fresh Concolorous.
Despite the coastal location, Cream-spot Tiger and Sand Dart
at Pegwell on the previous night were both notable for the site. (F Solly)
Wednesday 25th May 2011 Newington Ramsgate
Lots of moths last night ... very little out of
the ordinary. Heart and Darts were up to 32 individuals but otherwise
all the common late May stuff arrived in medium numbers plus a few semi
interesting micro's and the only moth of note being a May Highflyer.

Saturday 21st May 2011 Newington Ramsgate
I thought that I'd 'report in' as I haven't done
so in ages. The moth trapping hasn't exactly set the world alight here the
highlights these past few weeks being singles of Capua vulgana
(a new Tortrix to my garden) on the 15th and 16th, Grapholita
jungiella on the 18th, Brown Silver Line on the 8th, Flame
Carpet, Tawny Barred Angle and Cinnabar on the 9th,
Pale Tussock on the 10th, singles of Orange Footman on the 10th,
12th and 19th (a record haul for here), Shear's on the 16th,
Toadflax Brocade on the 3rd and a Chamomile Shark on the 17th.
Also a very early Bordered Beauty arrived on the 16th ... the best
part of a month early! Overnight amongst a medium sized catch of common
stuff there were singles Cochylis atricapitana,
Homoeosoma sinuella, Freyer's Pug, Treble-lines and a
nice Buff Tip. Dull! (Phil M)

Tuesday 10th May 2011 Pegwell Trap
Night of 9/5. A nice addition to the Thanet and ‘purity’ list (whatever
that is) was a Dew Moth at Pegwell. Other bits included Clouded
Border, Clouded Silver, Common Wave, Orange Footman and Large Nutmeg.
A bit of late news also from Pegwell was the stunning Tortrix –
Commophila aeneana on 7/5. Almost as bright orange as Dylan’s car –
I messed up the photo before losing it but will send it in for those
unfortunate souls who are yet to see D W’s automobile (F Solly)

Wednesday 4th May 2011 Clowes Wood Late
News
1/5/2011. Desperate to escape the misery of the on-going NE blast, I
decided on an afternoon visit to Clowes Wood - it giving me a chance of some
pine species along with the usual deciduous mix. Micropteryx calthella
were fairly conspicuous on Buttercup flowers and Adela rufimitrella
scattered around. 3 Metriotes lutarea were found amongst
Greater Stitchwort flowers and Nematopogon swammerdamella were
readily disturbed from track side vegetation. Gentle tapping (my
perspective) or manic beating (the casual observers perspective) didn't
produce a great deal until a nice Tortrix was coaxed out of a Fir -
provisionally identified as Epinotia fraternana (still need to
confirm), a very scarce species in Kent. Things then became rather quiet
with just singles of Epiblema cynosbatella and
Phyllonorycter harrisella. Whilst giving way to some cyclists (they
get everywhere!), I noticed a moth out of the corner of my eye flying just
over my head. With netting skills that PM can only dream of, the moth was
netted and potted. A rather attractive Tortrix, looking like a pine species
but one that I was not familiar with; unfortunately rather battered by the
time I had the opportunity to photograph. Having checked my literature it
would appear to be Gravitarmata margarotana (still waiting
confirmation) and if so would seem to be a new record for Britain. The only
other moths I saw after this were a single Anania funebrana
and lots of Cydia ulicetana around Gorse. (F Solly)
