Saturday 26th May 2007 Newington Thanet
Nothing of any quality overnight - singles of Blood
Vein, Common Wainscot and Small Square-spot about sums it up.
Numbers of Heart and Darts were up to 37 overnight which was
surprising giving the weather. Much better the night before with 2-Mottled
Pug, 1 Pale Tussock, 1 Least Black Arches etc plus a new
moth for my garden a White Spot - quite a rarity for Thanet. (Phil
M)
Friday 25th May 2007 Westgate Thanet

trifasciata, Small Magpie, Thistle Ermine, Green
Pug, Peppered Moth, White Ermine, 2 Cinnabar Moths,
Grey Dagger (spp) and 2 Tawny Marbled Minor. Migrants were 2
Pearly Underwings and 7 Diamond-backed
Moths, whilst other bits included Prays fraxinella, Waved

Wednesday 23rd May 2007 Newington Thanet
Slightly dull these past few nights even though moth
numbers are starting to rise ever so slightly. Overnight included: c6 Diamond-backed
Moth, 1 Flame, 1 Dusky Brocade, 1 Treble Lines
etc. Recent catches have included Common White Wave, Small
Square spot and a third Chamomile Shark on the 19th.Otherwise
as you'd expect. (Phil M)
Wednesday 23rd May 2007 Westgate Thanet
Quite a few micros last night included 2 very smart Azalea Leaf Miners (Caloptilia
azaleella), 21 Diamond-back Moths, 1 Bryotropha
affinis, 1 Platyedra subcinerea, 4 Epiblima
cynosbatella, 1 Eudonia pallida and 3 Udea
olivalis. A reasonable selection of macros included my first Willow
Beauty, Dark Arches and Marbled Minor for the year. I should
point out for the sceptics amongst you that good old Francis kindly
verified most of the macros. Quite how long it will be before he gets
bored doing so is difficult to say. (Tim Hodge)
Tuesday 22nd May 2007 East Blean & Monkton NR
An hour around East Blean late morning produced a selection of micro
moths, although apart from the attractive day flying species - Alabonia
geoffrella and Nemophora degeerella mostly difficult
to come by. About 15 species the pick of the remainder being Olethreutes
arcuella and Incurvaria pectinea. Very
few macro moths and by far the best was a female Drab Looper around
some Wood Spurge - a scarce moth in Kent. Also on the 20/5/2007
A brief
visit to Monkton Nature Reserve somewhat surprisingly produced the
attractive pyralid Pyrausta nigrata - new for Thanet I
believe. (F Solly)
Tuesday 22nd May 2007 Dumpton Thanet
Night of the 21st May2007 good numbers of moths over
night, noteworthy were the influx of Diamond-back Moth (Plutella xylostella)
a
total of 48 and a good number of Setaceous Hebrew Character total
of 29. (Gadget)

("Nettle-tap"), 1 Argyresthia goedartella, an
influx of 13 Diamond-back Moths, 3 Epiblema cynosbatella,
3 Common Marbled Carpet, a pale worn carpet (Spruce/Juniper?) to be
i.d'd., 1 Yellow-barred Brindle, 1 Light Emerald, 12 Heart
& Dart, 1 Large Yellow Underwing, 1 L-album Wainscot,

turned up yesterday. (Tim Hodge)
Sunday 20th May 2007 Newington Thanet
A
lesser catch on Saturday
19th overnight number wise but a few half decent back garden moths
sneaked in. Top moths were singles of Brown Silver-line and The
Shears. The Brown Silver-lines was only my second back garden record -
I've had the Shears 2 or 3 times in the past. Other 'bits' included: Maiden's
Blush, Peppered Moth, Eyed Hawk-moth and a Light Emerald. (Phil

Sunday 20th May 2007 Westgate Thanet
It
was a bit hectic on Friday as I spent the day birding in France, and I
wasn’t able to look at my moth traps until dusk on Friday evening.
Although I didn’t get, as much as Phillip, it appears that a little
micro I caught is Argyresthia
cupressella, which
Francis thinks is a new species for Kent. It’s a North American
adventive first recorded in Suffolk in 1997. As it was virtually dark when
I potted it, I didn’t really see it properly so hope that old Franny has
got some photos. There were quite a few other moths on Friday, including Epiblema
cynosbatella, Waved Umber, Light Emerald, Orange Footman, a
late Clouded Drab and a Rustic Shoulder Knot. This morning
there was a Treble Lines, a Silver Y, 2 Rustic Shoulder
Knots, my 4th Eyed Hawk Moth of the spring and a
couple of pugs and a tortrix which I’ve left in Franny’s capable
hands.

Friday 18th
May 2007 Newington Thanet
As expected the moth traps attracted a lot more stuff overnight - the
weather looked quite good anyway. I 'took' over 50 species which is a
significant increase (inc 40 species of macro moth) and included: Monopis
obviella, Celypha lacunana, Epilblema cynosbatella, Codling
Moth, 1
Agopopterix sp, Blastobasis decolorella, Ephistia parasitella, 1 Small
Dusty Wave, 1 Maiden's Blush, 3 Common carpet, 1 Green
Carpet, 1 Shaded Broad-bar, 1 Common Marbled Carpet, 1
Garden Carpet, 2 Lime-speck Pug, 2
Common Pug, 2 Double-striped Pug, 1 Waved Umber, 1 Willow
Beauty, 1
Mottled Beauty, 6 Common Swift, 1 White Ermine,1 Buff
Ermine,1 Swallow Prominent,1 Least Black Arches,8 Shuttle Shaped
Dart,4 Setaceous Hebrew Character,7 Flame Shoulder,3 Heart and
Dart,1 Turnip,1 Small Clouded Brindle,3 Rustic
Shoulder-knot,6 Bright-line Brown-Eye,1 Lychnis,1 Cabbage,2
Grey Dagger,1 Knotgrass,1 Marbled Minor,2 Tawny Marbled
Minor,2
Mottled Rustic,1 Burnished Brass,1 Silver Y,1 Spectacle and 5
Angle Shades. (Phil M)
Friday 18th May 2007 Kingsgate & Pegwell
Finally some decent moth weather. Lots of moths - species and numbers,
in both the Kingsgate and Pegwell traps - mostly just the usual suspects
for the time of year and far too tiresome to mention. Little to suggest
any significant migration with just a scattering of Silver Ys and a
Rusty Dot, so a Splendid Brocade at Pegwell was somewhat of
a surprise.

Thursday 17th May 2007 Newington Thanet
A steady trundle of moths coming to the lights in the
back garden but nothing to get the blood pumping. The past few nights have
turned up Mullein Wave, Maiden's Blush, Blood Vein, Large Yellow
Underwing plus another Chamomile Shark last night. Migrants are
scarce but I did get singles of Rusty Dot and Silver Y
overnight. (Phil M)
Thursday 17th May 2007 Westgate Thanet
Still rather quiet, although there was a little bit more overnight, with
my first Broad-barred White and Light Emerald of the year,
plus an Eyed Hawk Moth, 3 Common Marbled Carpets and Dark
Spectacle amongst a few other common species.
(Tim Hodge)
Monday 15th May 2007 Newington Thanet
Not
too much going on overnight with the only new specie for 2007 being one of
the Grey/Light Grey Tortrix duo. I haven’t yet sorted out which was it
is. Otherwise nothing better than a Muslin Moth, Poplar Hawk and Rustic-shoulder-knot.
I did get the first Mottled Beauty the previous night amongst a
similar sized catch. (Phil M)
Monday 14th May 2007 Westgate Thanet
Not
much at all in the traps last night. The night before was better, with
interest provided by singles of Phyllonorycter messianella, Prays
fraxinella, an attractive tortrix Pseudargyrotoza conwagana,
Maiden’s Blush and Orange Footman, whilst Setaceous
Hebrew Character and White-point were new for the year for me.
(Tim Hodge)
Sunday 13th May 2007 Newington Thanet
A medium catch overnight. New things included singles
of Epilblema cynosbatella, Cochylis hybridella,
Lime-speck Pug, Peppered Moth and an Iron Prominent.
Otherwise only a Poplar Hawk-moth of note amongst all the other
common stuff. (Phil M)
Saturday 12th May 2007 Newington Thanet
Not too many moths overnight with the only new things to the traps being
singles of Celypha lacunana, Grey Dagger and a White
Colon which is quite a good moth for the garden. Certainly not annual
anyway. (Phil M)
Saturday 12th May 2007 Westgate Thanet
Not
a huge amount in the traps last night, but they did include an Orange
Footman and a Pale Prominent. (Tim Hodge)
Friday
11th May 2007 Newington Thanet
With the mothing picking up as we enter mid-month I'm getting new things
for the year most nights.’ Bits' have included: Bordered Straw
and Cabbage on the 7th,Latticed Heath and Maidens Blush
on the 8th then
overnight Waved Umber, Turnip, Marbled Minor and a presumed Chamomile
Shark which I haven’t yet checked properly but I would imagine
its too early for the Shark. (Phil M)
Wednesday
9th May 2007 Westgate
Thanet
I
dunno, you slave away for weeks just for Milton to come back and catch a
load of moths. I reckon he kept his trap on for the entire time he was
away and that it was full of dead moths when he got back. Luckily my poor
little urban garden had a good night last night, with 1 Mullein, 1 Least
Black Arches, 1 Chinese Character and 2 Phyllonorycter
messianella, ably supported by my first Buff Ermine, Common
Carpet and Lime-speck Pug of the year, plus 2 Silver Ys,
28 E. postvittana, 4 Shuttle-shaped Dart, 1 Brimstone,
1 Angle Shades, 1 Vine's Rustic, 1 Bright-line Brown-eye
and 2 Heart & Darts and Yellow
Belle.
I also caught a very dull dark grey micro, which looks like a new one to
me. Let's hope old hairy can tell me what it is. (Tim Hodge)

Shades. (Phil M)
Saturday 5th May 2007 Westgate Thanet
Whilst the cream of Thanet mothers has been enjoying the heat of the
United States, we poor people have had to put up with endless windy
north-easterlies. It’s all been rather annoying. A few decent moths did
creep into my garden though. The pick of the bunch were a Buttoned
Snout on Apr 24th, a Seraphim on May 1st
and an Eyed Hawk Moth on May 3rd, whilst back ups
included a Brindled Pug on Apr 20th, a Silver Y
on Apr 19th, 2 Ruby Tigers and Incurvaria
masculella on Apr 24th, Diamond-back Moths on
Apr 27th and 30th, Celypha lacunana on
Apr 29th, the Spectacle on Apr 30th and May 1st
and 2 Caloptilia betulicola on May 1st. First
dates for commoner species included Brown House Moth on Apr 23rd,
Common Pug on Apr 19th, Heart & Dart on Apr
25th, Flame Shoulder on Apr 29th, Cabbage
Moth and Bright-line Brown-eye on Apr 19th and Common
Marbled Carpet on May 1st. Numbers included 2 Monopis
obviella on Apr 25th, 56 Light Brown Apple Moths,
8 Double-striped Pugs, 5 White-shouldered House Moths, 3 Eudonia
angustea, 2 Esperia sulphurella, 3 Bright-line
Brown-eye and 2 Muslin Moths on Apr 24th, 5 Brimstone

and May 2nd, 2-4 Hebrew Character, Early Grey and Common
Quaker on several dates, 6 Angle Shades on Apr 22nd,
5 Pale Mottled Willows on Apr 24th and 29th
and 4 Dark Spectacles on Apr 28th. There endeth the
list. (Tim Hodge)
