Moth Nights 2011

Wednesday March 30th  Saltwood

54 moths of 9 species overnight. Highlights were 3 Double-striped Pug,  2 Diurnea fagella and a single Caloptila elongella, a new one for the year. (Paul How)

Wednesday 30th March 2011 Newington  Ramsgate

Moths overnight included singles of Double-striped Pug and Early Grey, 2 Hebrew Characters, 5 Common Quakers and 4 Clouded Drabs. Unfortunately the best moth of the night I found floundering next to one of the traps after a cat attack ... it was a Tawny Pinion. How do you stop these darn felines? ... other peoples pets are a menace, cats at the traps swatting the moths - dogs chasing off all the birds etc. I don't want to hurt the cats I just want rid of them away from my moth traps. (Phil M)

Wednesday 30th March 2011 Dumpton Thanet

Moving forward on the moth front in my garden, as there were four moths in the trap this morning, 2 Common Quakers, 1 Hebrew Character and 1 Clouded Drab, my excitement is building, and soon I should be getting double figures! (Gadget)

Tuesday 29th March 2011 Newington Ramsgate

It's been so poor around the garden traps this past few nights that I was pleased to find more than two moths today. Top of the pile was a wanderer from the woods in the shape of a Diurnea fagella which is a moth that I very rarely take here. The other 'back up' was all common stuff ... 5 Common Quakers, 2 Hebrew Characters, 1 Early Grey and 1 Clouded Drab. (Phil M)

Tuesday 29th March 2011 Dumpton Thanet

Sunday 20th March 2011 Newington Ramsgate

An enormous full moon and clear skies - not the best conditions for an early spring moth extravaganza, I didn't expect much and was correct to do so as I got precisely three moths ... 2 March Moths and a Common Quaker. I've hardly caught anything since I last reported in ... a few Quakers about it - mind you two March Moths in a sitting is very good for here. (Phil M)

Sunday March 13th 2011 Saltwood

Singles of Emmelina monodactyla, Dotted Border, Oak Beauty and Small Quaker, 21 Common Quaker, 4 Hebrew Character, and two new, singles of Early Grey and Satellite. A dizzy total of 31 moths. (Paul Howe)

Sunday 13th March 2011 Newington Ramsgate

A much milder night with some rain - I was hopeful of getting a few moths but had to make do with a rather disappointing five moths - 1 Emmelina monodactyla, 3 Common Quaker, 1 Hebrew Character and a Clouded Drab. I am desperate for a Twin-spotted Quaker ... I haven't caught one since 2006 and still haven't got any photos of this species and was really hopeful given the wind direction and temperature that I might get one. It's not too much to ask for ... they are hardly a rarity. (Phil M)

Sunday 13th March 2011 Dumpton Thanet

Another moth from last night things are looking good, this mornings delight a Chestnut, (Gadget)

Saturday 12th March 2011 Newington Ramsgate

A stiff southerly and improving temperatures gave me hope of a few moths - I caught five which is as good as it's been round here this month. The moths were singles of Agonopterix alstromeriana, Hebrew Character, Small Quaker and 2 Common Quakers. (Phil M)

At last I had 4 moths in the trap! 2 Common Quaker, 1 Light Brown Apple Moth, 1 Dark Chestnut. (Sue Smith)

Friday 11th Marsh 2011 Pegwell Bay

Three moths last night ... a Common Quaker ... a Hebrew Character and a Dotted Border (the same one as the night prior I assume as it flew off in the garden when I was trying to photograph it) .. nothing too exciting but it's early days. (Phil M)

Thursday 10th March 2011 Newington Ramsgate

Two moths overnight - singles of Dotted Border and Small Quaker, two species that are not annual in my garden though never totally unexpected as they are both common species around habitat. (Phil M)

Thursday 10th March 2011 Saltwood

Night of March 9th, 1 Tortricodes alternella, 1 Small Quaker, 7 Common Quaker, 1 Chestnut, (Paul Howe)

Wednesday 9th March 2011 Newington Ramsgate

At last a moth ... the first moth I've caught since ..er um ... the last one I caught. You can't argue with such logic can you? The moth was a Hebrew Character and after extensive research into the moths records I can exclusively reveal that its the first moth I've taken since February 26th! Well the first macro anyway ... I have had a couple of Emmelina monodactyl as during the last week of deep freeze. I see Bill recorded -6 degrees where he is and I'm not surprised as the bird water out in the garden froze absolutely solid the night before last! (Phil M)

Tuesday 8th March 2011 Eastry

Dared myself to put the trap out last night just for fun, without much prospect of a catch, the sky was clear and frosty and not a breath of wind. Dawn temperature was down to minus 6 degrees Celsius, so I was happy to find three Common Quaker had come in to play! (Bill Martin)
