Moth Nights 2009

Tuesday 31st March 2009 Beltinge

Night 30/3 - a 50 plus moth night, but apart from a Double-striped Pug and a couple of Clouded Drab it was all the usual moths, (Barry Hunt)

Monday 30th March 2009 Stonelees Pegwell

There was a male Emperor Moth flying around in Stonelees this morning.     (Phil M)

Monday 30th March 2009 Newington Thanet

3 moths in the traps overnight - one of them was a Dotted Border which is a moth I don't catch too often here in concrete city. I've hardly been catching anything this past week or more - just the occasional Hebrew Character, Common Quaker and Early Grey. (Phil M)

Monday 30th March 2009 Beltinge

Night 29/3 - the first trapping I've done in over a week due to the poor weather, it was chilly and frosty but the wind, at least for my site, was favourable. 24 moths caught with nothing to exciting, Hebrew Character, Common Quaker, Small Quaker, Chestnut and Early Grey being the moths in the trap. (Barry Hunt)

Friday 27th March 2009 Dumpton Thanet

My first Early Grey of this year last night with 2 Hebrew Characters and 1 Emmelina monodactyla, (Gadget)

Monday 23rd March 2009 Pegwell Trap

Night of 22/3. A thrilling visit to the Pegwell trap, 6 Common Quaker, 4 Hebrew Character with single Twin-spotted Quaker and Powdered Quaker (F Solly)

Thursday 19th March 2009 Beltinge

Night of 18/3 - 13 Hebrew Characters, 8 Common Quaker, 1 March Moth, 1 Satellite, 3 Early Grey and 2 Clouded Drab. Was more than I expected on what was a chilly night. The previous night was my worst for a while with just 11 moths 3 Early Grey, 5 Hebrew Character and 3 Common Quaker.   (Barry Hunt)

Wednesday 18th March 2009 Dumpton Thanet

Numbers are go up slowly, Three moths over night 2 Clouded Drab and 1 Common Quaker, (Gadget)

Tuesday 17th March 2009 Beltinge

Night of 16/3 - a slightly reduced catch on the previous night saw 12 Common Quaker, 13 Hebrew Character, 1 March Moth, 1 Early Grey, 1 Small Quaker, 1 Clouded Drab and 1 Emmelina monodactyla. (Barry Hunt)

Monday 16th March 2009 Newington Thanet

Only 3 moths in the traps overnight - 2 Common Quakers and a single Clouded Drab. (Phil M)

Monday 16th March 2009 Westgate Thanet

Four moths! How impressive is that? A Satellite was new for the garden, others were Early Grey, Common Quaker and Endrosis sarcitrella. Yesterday saw an Agonopterix propinquella. Overwhelmed, I'm just off to lie down. (Tim H)

Monday 16th March 2009 Beltinge

Night of 15/4 - a reasonable night with 36 moths trapped, 16 Hebrew Character, 14 Common Quaker, 2 Small Quaker, 2 Clouded Drab, 1 Early Grey and 1 Diurnea fagella. Could just scrape another night of moffing tonight, (Barry Hunt)

Sunday 15th March 2009 Beltinge

Night of 14/3 - only four moths last night, 2 Hebrew Character, 1 Common Quaker and 1 Tawny Pinion, tonight looks like the last chance for a while for me, north-easterlies, cool temperatures, ahh must be Spring!          (Barry Hunt)

Sunday 15th March 2009 Newington Thanet

Only 3 moths overnight in the cool clear conditions but one of the critters was a long awaited Oak Beauty - the first I've ever caught in my garden - which might I add 'continues' to be far superior to old hairy has-beens gaff a mere half a mile or less n/east of here, regardless of what he might try and tell you. The other two macros were more predictable - both being Common Quakers. I'm still to catch a Hebrew Character this spring. (Phil M)

Sunday 15th March 2009 Dumpton Thanet

Two moths last night both Emmelina monodactyla and both outside the trap on the walls, (Gadget)

Saturday 14th March 2009 Beltinge

Night of 13/3 - couldn't quite believe it but 58 moths were trapped last night, new for the year were 4 Clouded Drab, 1 Shoulder Stripe, 1 Pale Pinion and 1 Small Quaker. The rest made up of 21 Hebrew Character, 18 Common Quaker, 1 March Moth, 1 Dotted Border, 2 Oak Beauty, 5 Early Grey, 1 Emmelina monodactyla, 1 Amblyptilia acanthadactyla and 1 Agonipterix alstromeriana. (Barry Hunt)

Saturday 14th March 2009 Dumpton Thanet

Two Moths last night 1 Common Quaker and 1 Emmelina monodactyla (Gadget)

Friday 13th March 2009 Westgate Thanet

Well, I joined the 2009 mothing club last night, the trap going on for the first time this year. I predicted between 0-2 moths and either Common Quaker or Hebrew Character, so 1 moth (Common Quaker) came as no great surprise. It’s alright for Barry, at least he’s got decent habitat around his trap. (Tim H)

Friday 13th March 2009 Newington Thanet

A veritable moth-fest overnight given how bad it's been here of late, I caught 4 Common Quakers, 1 Early Grey, 1 Tawny Pinion and a Pale Brindled Beauty. Ooh inn it exciting eh? (Phil M) (overly happy with meagre pickings)

Friday 13th March 2009 Beltinge

Night of 12/3 - another reasonable night with 27 moths in the trap, 13 Hebrew Character, 7 Common Quaker, 2 March Moth, 3 Early Grey, 1 Dotted Border and 1 Grey Shoulder-knot. (Barry Hunt)

Thursday 12th march 2009 Newington Thanet

A funny thing happened this morning. I went out to my moth trap and found two weird creatures inside? I wasn't at all sure what they were at first but something in the back of my mind was nagging me that I'd seen something resembling them in the distant past? After many hours of exhaustive research I'd failed to identify these strange 'insects' for this is what they were, of this I was certain. Then as a last resort I tried a 'moth' book and lo and behold there they were - and the weird creatures were indeed 'moths' they even had their names written in English within the books pages. The first one was a 'Common Quaker' and the second slightly worse for wear individual was in fact a 'moth' known as the 'Chestnut'. Whatever next eh? Two apparently extremely common macro moths in only one night - I'll be breaking out the bubbly at this rate. I will keep the insects for a short while in case evidence is required? (Phil M)

Thursday 12th March 2009 Beltinge

Night of 11/3 - the best night of the year so far here produced a total of 30 moths. 12 Hebrew Character, 7 Common Quaker, 3 Oak Beauty, 2 Early Grey, 1 March Moth, 1 Chestnut, 1 Dotted Border, 1 Pine Beauty, 1 Tortricodes alternella and 1 Agonopterix heracliana. (Barry Hunt)

Thursday 12th March 2009 Dumpton Thanet

Only one moth last night a Common Quaker other than that very quiet in my garden. (Gadget)

Wednesday 11th March 2009 Beltinge

Night of 10/3 - despite the cool conditions a few bits made it to the trap, 4 Hebrew Character, 2 Common Quaker, 1 Satellite and a late Early Moth. (Barry Hunt)

Tuesday 10th March 2009 Pegwell Trap

Night of 9/3, almost a moff fest at Pegwell last night with singles of Common Quaker, Hebrew Character, Pale Pinion and Satellite, Thanet just doesn't get better than that - unfortunately! (F Solly)

Tuesday 10th March 2009 Beltinge

Night of 9/3, at last a Small Brindled Beauty in the trap, a new site record

Also 1 Oak Beauty, 1 March Moth, 3 Hebrew Character, 5 Common Quaker and 1 Tortricodes alternella, (Barry Hunt)

Sunday 8th March 2009 Beltinge

Night 7/3 - mild and breezy overnight and it produced a few moths, 1 Oak Beauty, 1 Chestnut, 1 March Moth, 6 Common Quaker and 1 Hebrew Character. (Barry Hunt)

Sunday 8th March 2009 Dumpton Thanet

Just the one moth an Amblyptilia acanthadactyla (Gadget)

Saturday 7th March 2009 Beltinge

Night 6/3 - a slightly milder night saw a few moths to the trap, 5 Common Quaker, 1 Chestnut, 1 March Moth and 1 Emmelina monodactyla.       (Barry Hunt)

Wednesday 4th March 2009 Beltinge

The last two or three nights have seen Grey Shoulder-knot, March Moth, 2 Chestnuts, 2 Hebrew Characters, Angle Shades, 5 Common Quakers, Dotted Border, Early Moth and Satellite. (Barry Hunt)

Wednesday 4th March 2009 Dumpton Thanet

Only the one moth this morning an Emmelina monodactyla (Gadget)

Monday 2nd March 2009 Pegwell Trap

Night of 1/3. The Pegwell trap was awash with moffs, little room left on the egg trays for any more. Using most of my fingers on one hand, I counted - 1 Common Quaker, 1 Hebrew Character and 1 Agonopterix heracliana      (F Solly)

Monday 2nd March 2009 Dumpton Thanet

Three moths in the trap this morning 1 Hebrew Character, 1 Pale Brindled Beauty, and 1 Emmelina monodactyla, (Gadget)
