Night of 28/3 - just four moths in the trap: 2 Hebrew Character, 1 March Moth and 1 Small Quaker. The two previous nights have been equally stunning with Hebrew Character, Early Grey, Common and Small Quaker in pitiful numbers. Will the forecast of warmer weather improve this wonderful month? (Barry H)

Thursday 27th March 2008 Newington Thanet

Shock horror!! There were 3 moths in the traps overnight!! Or was it just some sort of surrealistic dream?? Anyway if I haven't gone completely bonkers - there were singles of Double-striped Pug, Hebrew Character and a Satellite. The Satellite was quite good for my gaff - only about my third or fourth one ever. That's 'if' I didn't dream the whole thing up? (Phil M)

Wednesday 26th March 2008 Pegwell Trap

Night of 25/3. A moff in a moff trap! Hard to believe these days. Pegwell as far as this month is concerned was overwhelming with 1 Common Quaker, 1 Small Quaker, 2 Hebrew Character and 1 Grey Shoulder-knot. (F Solly)

Tuesday 18th March 2008 Dumpton Thanet

Night of the 17th only one moth Diurnea fagella (Gadget)

Monday 17th March 2008 Leaf Miner

17/3/2008. Another day, another miner - I'm sure that you will be pleased to know, on this occasion, Phyllonorycter kleemannella from Alder at Seaton. Perhaps not too many more to come, parasites seem to have done very well (F Solly)

Sunday 16th March 2008 Leaf-Miner

Another one of does darn leaf-miners put in a appearance at the weekend. Slightly more interesting than usual in that it was a tick. The very small (wing span of 5.5-6.5mm) but rather nice Phyllonorycter anderidae emerged from Birch leaf mines, collected from Denstroude Wood last autumn. (F Solly)

Sunday 16th March 2008 Dumpton Thanet

The night of 12/3/08 - a few moths overnight 1 Clouded Drab and 7 Hebrew Characters, Still at least the strong winds have abated for now, and the next three nights don't look to bad, then it goes northerly and cold, wonderful! (Barry H)

Wednesday 12th March 2008 Beltinge

Night of 11/3 - another very windy night here, only produced three moths in the trap 1 Hebrew Character, 1 Common Quaker and a mild surprise in the form of a Grey Shoulder-knot.  (Barry H)

Tuesday 11th March 2008 Beltinge

Night of 10/3 - not a great night, just 1 Small Quaker and 2 Hebrew Character made the trap. (Barry H)

Monday 10th March 2008 Beltinge

Night of 9/3 - decided to run the trap as the strong southerly wind that was forecast had me thinking of woodland wanderers, as East Blean is about 3 miles to the south of the trap site I was hopeful, so it proved with 3 Oak Beauty, scarce here only one previous record. Other moths included 1 Early Grey, 4 Common Quaker, 4 Hebrew Character, 1 Small Quaker and 1 Epiphyas postvittana. (Barry H)

Sunday 9th March 2008 Belting

Night of 7/3 - in the trap last night, 1 Clouded Drab, 1 Early Grey, 1 Hebrew Character, 1 Chestnut and 2 Common Quaker. (Barry H)

Saturday 8th March 2008 Beltinge

Night of 7/3 - clear, cool conditions overnight only produced five moths in the trap, 1 Early Thorn, 2 Hebrew Character and 2 Common Quaker. (Barry H)

Friday 7th March 2008 East Blean

Under orders to be positive - no freedom of expression apparently allowed. Night of 6/3 an unexpectedly calm, mild and cloudy night. Having been nagged by Tim for what seems like an eternity, I decided to be sociable (not something that comes easy) and let him and Gadget know that I was available for a couple of hours of quality moffing at East Blean. I arrived just before 8pm; the others conveniently arrived after I had set up. There then followed 2 1/2 hours of really 'enjoyable' moffing in excellent company in some fine ancient woodland, The varied and mostly friendly banter being interrupted on occasions by some boring nonsense about cameras/lenses/F stops etc and the odd moth. For me, a predictable selection but not unpleasant; for Tim, a number of tarts ticks. The evening produced; 12 Yellow Horned, 60 March Moth, 1 Shoulder Stripe, 3 Brindled Pug, 1 Early Thorn, 4 Small Brindled Beauty, 12 Oak Beauty, 1 Engrailed, 4 Red Chestnut, 70 Small Quaker, 5 Common Quaker, 4 Clouded Drab, 1 Twin-spotted Quaker, 1 Grey Shoulder-knot, 2 Satellite, 12 Chestnut, 70 Tortricodes alternella, 1 Acleris notana/ferrugana and 1 Ypolopha ustella. (F Solly)

Friday 7th March 2008 Beltinge

Night of 6/3 - a mild night produced the following moths, 7 Common Quaker, 6 Hebrew Character, 1 Small Quaker, 1 Chestnut, 2 Diurnea fagella, 1 Acleris cristana, 1 Emmelina monodactyla and 1 Amblyptilia acanthadactyla. (Barry H)

Thursday 6th March 2008 Pegwell Trap

Night of 5/3. The Pegwell trap contained a rather unremarkable selection with 1 Early Moth, 1 Common Quaker, 4 Hebrew Character and 1 Early Grey Another leaf miner appeared in the form of Phyllonorycter ulmifoliella a Birch species from Denstroude Wood. You just don't know how lucky you are - or should that be unlucky! (F Solly)

Thursday 6th March 2008 Beltinge

Night of 5/3 - the northerly wind has gone which meant a return to reasonable conditions here, Six moths in the trap 1 Clouded Drab, 1 Satellite and 4 Hebrew Character.  (Barry H)

Wednesday 5th March 2008 Leaf Miners

5/3/2008. Bored with the little critters yet? Don't worry, you will be. Another couple of the blighters emerged, Phyllonorycter platanoidella - Norway Maple from East Blean and Phyllonorycter quinquegutella - Creeping Sallow from Sandwich Bay (F Solly)

Monday 3rd March 2008 Pegwell Trap

Night of 2/3. A vast array of moths in the Pegwell trap, with 4 Common Quaker, 3 Hebrew Character, 1 Clouded Drab and 1 Early Grey. It can now only be a couple of months before it’s actually worth moffing. (F Solly)

Monday 3rd March 2008 Leaf Miners

More news from the sad world of leaf mines, overnight hatchings were;  Phyllonorycter esperella - Hornbeam from East Blean, a 'live' Phyllonorycter ragella - Alder from Monkton Nature Reserve and some more Phyllonorycter quercifoliella - Oak from East Blean (F Solly)

Monday 3rd March 2008 Beltinge

Night of 2/3 - the colder air mass had arrived overnight and it certainly felt a bit chilly this morning on my visit to the trap site. Four moths were in the trap, 2 Hebrew Character and 2 Common Quaker. Looks like that might be my lot for the next couple of nights, northerly wind, cold nights, roll on summer! (Barry H)

Sunday 2nd March 2008 Leaf Miners

2/3/2008. Another leaf miner emerged - ready for it this time, Phyllonorycter nicellii - a common miner of Hazel leaves, collected from East Blean. I also took a rather poor photo of the unfortunate Phyllonorycter ragella which emerged rather early and subsequently died in the pot. (F Solly)

Sunday 2nd March 2008 Beltinge

Night of 1/3 - a breezy night produced three moths in the trap, 2 Hebrew Character and 1 Common Quaker. The previous night of 29/2 was a real howler, very, very windy but a single Common Quaker somehow got in the trap! (Barry H)
