Thursday 27th March
2008 Newington Thanet
Shock horror!! There were
3 moths in the traps overnight!! Or was it just some sort of surrealistic
dream?? Anyway if I haven't gone completely bonkers - there were singles of
Double-striped Pug, Hebrew Character and a Satellite.
The Satellite was quite good for my gaff - only about my third or fourth one
ever. That's 'if' I didn't dream the whole thing up? (Phil M)

you will be pleased to know, on this occasion, Phyllonorycter

come, parasites seem to have done very well (F Solly)
Sunday 16th March 2008 Leaf-Miner
Another one of does darn leaf-miners put in a
appearance at the weekend. Slightly more interesting than usual in that it
was a tick. The very small (wing span of 5.5-6.5mm) but rather nice
Phyllonorycter anderidae emerged from Birch leaf mines, collected
from Denstroude Wood last autumn. (F Solly)

Night of 9/3 - decided to
run the trap as the strong southerly wind that was forecast had me thinking
of woodland wanderers, as East Blean is about 3 miles to the south of the
trap site I was hopeful, so it proved with 3 Oak Beauty, scarce here
only one previous record. Other moths included 1 Early Grey, 4
Common Quaker, 4 Hebrew Character, 1 Small Quaker and 1
Epiphyas postvittana. (Barry H)

Friday 7th March 2008 East Blean
Under orders to be positive - no freedom of expression apparently
allowed. Night of 6/3 an unexpectedly calm, mild and cloudy night. Having
been nagged by Tim for what seems like an eternity, I decided to be sociable
(not something that comes easy) and let him and Gadget know that I was
available for a couple of hours of quality moffing at East Blean. I arrived
just before 8pm; the others conveniently arrived after I had set up. There
then followed 2 1/2 hours of really 'enjoyable' moffing in excellent company
in some fine ancient woodland, The varied and mostly friendly banter being
interrupted on occasions by some boring nonsense about cameras/lenses/F
stops etc and the odd moth. For me, a predictable selection but not
unpleasant; for Tim, a number of tarts ticks. The evening produced; 12
Yellow Horned, 60 March Moth, 1 Shoulder Stripe, 3
Brindled Pug, 1 Early Thorn, 4 Small Brindled Beauty, 12
Oak Beauty, 1 Engrailed, 4 Red Chestnut, 70 Small
Quaker, 5 Common Quaker, 4 Clouded Drab, 1 Twin-spotted
Quaker, 1 Grey Shoulder-knot, 2 Satellite, 12 Chestnut,
70 Tortricodes alternella, 1 Acleris notana/ferrugana
and 1 Ypolopha ustella. (F Solly)

Night of 2/3 - the colder air mass had arrived
overnight and it certainly felt a bit chilly this morning on my visit to the
trap site. Four moths were in the trap, 2 Hebrew Character and 2
Common Quaker. Looks like that might be my lot for the next couple of
nights, northerly wind, cold nights, roll on summer! (Barry H)
Sunday 2nd March 2008
Leaf Miners
2/3/2008. Another leaf
miner emerged - ready for it this time, Phyllonorycter nicellii - a
common miner of Hazel leaves, collected from East Blean. I also took a
rather poor photo of the unfortunate Phyllonorycter ragella
which emerged rather early and subsequently died in the pot. (F Solly)
