Saturday 30th June 2007 Westgate Thanet
A cracking Sallow Kitten was the pick of the
moths last night, the only other bit of interest being my second Small
Clouded Brindle of the week. Like everyone else, I'm suffering from a
distinct lack of moths, although last night I did get 102 moths of 36
species compared to my recent low of only 76 moths of 25 species last
Tuesday night. (Tim H)
Saturday 30th June 2007 Beltings Herne Bay
Night of 29 June. Another poor night with not a
lot happening. Only things worthy of a mention were singles of Dark
Sword-grass, Lackey, Pebble Prominent, Figure of Eighty, Buff-tip, and a
White-point. Silver Y again 9. (Barry H)
Thursday 28th June 2007 Beltings Herne Bay
A
reasonable night given the wind and late rain. Highlights were 3 Delicates
and 9 Silver Y on the presumed migrant front. Other bits included a
Ruddy Carpet, Bordered Sallow, Barred Yellow, Eyed-hawk, Varied Coronet
and a Shaded Pug. (Barry Hunt)
Thursday 28th June 2007 Newington Thanet
Well the weathers still awful but I have still managed to entice a few
moths this past couple of nights. The highlights have been singles of Barred
Straw, Common Wave, Privet Hawkmoth, Pale Prominent and Dog's
Tooth plus an early Square-spot Rustic. (Phil M)
Wednesday 27th June 2007 Monkton NR Thanet
27/6/2007. I popped into Monkton Nature Reserve briefly as I was leaving
the concrete isle. I had only been there a few minutes, looking at
Phyllonorycter mines on Alder, when sitting on a leaf right in front of me
was one of my most sought after micros - the rather superb looking Stathmopoda
pedella, in it's distinctive resting position - the hind legs at
90 degrees. In nearby grassland, I also disturbed the attractive
pyralid Oncocera semirubella (F Solly)
Tuesday 26th June 2007 Newington Thanet
Recent
moths (nights of 24th/25th) have included a Clouded Border, Lackey,
Delicate, Cream-bordered Green Pea, Elephant and Poplar Hawk-moth etc.
(Phil M)
Sunday
24th June 2007 Newington Thanet
The past two catches have included on night of 22nd Endotricha
flammealis, Common White Wave, 1 Elephant Hawk-moth
and 2 Delicate then on the night of 23rd: Dwarf Cream Wave,
1 Clancy's Rustic etc. The best moth was the tortrix Spatalistis
bifasciana that I would assume is a good moth for Thanet? I've
never taken one in the garden before anyway. (Phil M)
Sunday 24th June 2007 Moth night at Pegwell Bay
Thanks to everyone that
attended the moth night at Pegwell Bay on the 23rd June 2007, it was a
good attendance and on our part a good night, we look forward to seeing
you all at the next moth night on the 14th July 2007. I would like to
thank Francis, Dylan and Tony for all there time and help. (Gadget)
Friday 22nd June 2007 Newington Thanet
All's still quiet on the moth front. This past couple
of nights have shown up Single-dotted Wave, Spinach, Swallow-tailed
Moth and a Small fan-foot. Migrants have been scarce with a big
fall in the numbers of Diamond Back's and only the occasional Silver
Y plus singles of Dark-sword Grass and a Delicate
overnight. Micros have included Epilblema foenella, Batia lunaris,
Parsnip Moth, Large Tabby, Meal Moth and Homoeosoma
sinuella. (Phil M)
Friday 22nd June 2007 Westgate Thanet
A further increase in variety, with 71 species recorded last night. Bits
included an Elephant Hawk Moth, a Varied Coronet, a Burnished
Brass, my first Dot Moth of the year, a Poplar Grey, 3 White-point,
3 Heart & Club, 1 Clouded Silver, 1 Figure of Eighty
and 3 Common Emerald, whilst new micros included Caloptilia
syringella and Coleophora mayrella. Of interest was
my second Argyresthia cupressella of the spring. Franny also
had one recently, so these might represent the 1st-3rd
Kent records, although it’s possible that others have had some recently
that we don’t yet know about. (Tim Hodge)
Thursday 21st June 2007 Westgate Thanet
Rather more moths last night, the pick of the macros
being a Rosy Footman. Other bits included 1 Figure of Eighty,
1 Clouded Silver, 1 Poplar Hawk Moth, 1 Grey Dagger,
8 Silver Y, 3 Uncertains, 10 Dark Arches, 1 Heart
& Club and 4 Flame. Micros included Eucosma
metzneriana, Tinea pellionella, Batia unitella, Aethes
beatricella, 2 Pammene regiana and 1 Eudonia
mercurella. (Tim Hodge)
Tuesday
19th June 2007 Newington Thanet
The weather has still been poor this past couple of nights with very few
Geo's or Micro's on the wing plus the variety of Macro's has been dull
too. That said I have still taken a few good moths for the garden. On the
night of the 17th I took a second Tinea fulvella, another Cinnabar,
a Spruce Carpet and the grass moth Platyes cerussella.
Last nights 'bits' included Spinach, a Bright Wave and a new
macro for the yard - a Bird's Wing. New in common stuff this past
two nights has been: Common Emerald, Common
Footman, Uncertain and Dot Moth.
(Phil M)
Monday 18th June 2007 Westgate Thanet
Rather
quiet in the last couple of days. A few new bits for the year included Small
Elephant Hawk Moth, Burnished Brass, Heart & Club, 2 Aethes
beatricella, Lozotaeniodes formosanus, Zeiraphera isertana, Scoparia
ambigualis and Common Emerald. (Tim Hodge)
Sunday 17th
June 2007 Newington Thanet
Another
poor catch overnight (I'm getting used to it) but it did include 3 little
bits of quality in the shape of a Fern, a Cinnabar and a
Four-dotted Footman. Cinnabars are surprisingly uncommon in my garden
and the Footman was a new moth for the garden. Otherwise it was dreadful
for the time of year. The night prior was dull in the extreme – a single
Short-cloaked Moth the only thing worthy of mention. (Phil M)
Friday 15th June 2007 Dumpton Thanet
Night of the 14th June 2007 to 125MV light 3 Delicate,
(Very Fresh) 1 Small Blood-vein, ,
1 Dioryctria abietella, 49 Diamond-back Moths,
96 Heart & Darts the best night this year for numbers. (Gadget)
Thursday 14th June 2007 Westgate Thanet
The last couple of nights have seen a big increase in numbers and species
in my garden, with about 350 moths of 73 species the day before yesterday
and 470 moths of 69 species last night. I know this is normal for this
time of year, but as a new boy it is quite impressive although it is
taking much longer to deal with them all. Thanks to Francis for his help
in identifying some of the species. Anyway, the interesting bits for the
two days include 1 Lyonetia clerkella, 17 Diamond-back
Moths, 1 Oegoconia quadripuncta, 1 Aleimma
loeflingiana, 1 Lobesia littoralis, 1 Pammene
regiana, 1 Crambus pascuella, 4 Dioryctria
abietella, 1 Small Blood-vein, 2 Magpie Moths, 1 Mottled
Beauty, 1 Orange Footman, 226 Heart & Darts (last
night), 1 Varied Coronet, 1 Poplar Grey, 1 Light Arches,
1 Clouded Brindle, 2 Dusky Brocades, 11 Mottled Rustics
(last night), 8 Silver Ys (last night) and another Buttoned
Snout. (Tim
Hodge)
Thursday 14th June 2007 Newington Thanet
Decent moths have been at a premium this month as the
weathers been flipping awful until last night. Still
good numbers of Dioryctria abietella with 1 - 4 moths
most nights. The highlights of the last week or so have
been singles of Dwarf Pug and Clouded Brindle - both
new moths to the garden. Other noteworthy stuff for the
confines of a housing estate back garden have been
Spinach, Small Elephant Hawk-moth, Maple Prominent and Small
Ranunculus. Decent micros have included Lesser Wax Moth, Monopis
crocicapitella and Eupocilia
angustana. Vast numbers of Diamond Back's and Heart and
Darts this season too. (Phil M)
Wednesday 13th June 2007 Westgate Thanet
Nearly 300 moths of 60 species
last night. New for the year were Clouded Brindle (a good garden
moth in Thanet, I believe), Maple Prominent, Common Footman,
Gypsonoma sociana and Nemapogon cloacella,
whilst other bits included a Dioryctria abietella, 6 Green
Oak Tortrix, 1 Peppered Moth, 1 Orange Footman and 135 Heart
& Darts. (Tim Hodge)
Wednesday 13th June 2007 Kingsgate
& Pegwell Traps
Night of
12/6. The wind finally shifted from the north but the sky cleared. A
better selection and larger numbers at Kingsgate than of late although the
only notables were singles of Orange and Red-necked Footman.
Pegwell was surprising poor with nothing worthy of even a cursory mention.
(F Solly)
Tuesday 12th June 2007 Westgate Thanet
A
steady increase in numbers and variety over the past three days. New
macros for the year include Least Carpet, Satin Wave and Riband
Wave, whilst other bits included another Buttoned Snout and Clancy's
Rustic, with numbers provided by peaks of 159 Heart & Dart,
6 Dark Spectacles, 8 Mottled Rustic, 6 Dark Arches, 5
Silver Y and 8 Buff Ermine. Quite a few new micros included
1 Ringed China Mark, 1 Batia lunaris, 2 Agonopterix
yeatiana, 1 Barred Fruit-tree Tortrix, 2 Dark Fruit-tree
Tortrix, 1 Large Fruit-tree Tortrix, 1 Green Oak Tortrix,
2 Celypha striana and 1 Marbled Orchard Tortrix.
(Tim Hodge)
Monday 11th June 2007 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps
The seemingly endless northerly wind continues to
adversely affect the Kingsgate trap with numbers and variety well down.
The only thing of note being an Obscure Wainscot on 9/6 - a good
moth on Thanet. Lots of moths in the more sheltered Pegwell trap, although
with the poor wind direction little in the way of wanderers and largely
comprising the usual suspects - up to 138 Heart and Darts, 20+ L-album
Wainscots, Setaceous Hebrews, Vines Rustics etc. 5 Small Elephants
Hawks is a site record and the first Privet Hawk of the season
occurred last night. Pinion-spotted Pug and Small Seraphim
are the only notables although Clouded Brindle is moderately scarce
in these parts. Exceptional for Thanet is the unusual numbers of Dioryctria
abietella being recorded, max of 4 on 8th. Thousands of Diamond
Backs across Thanet - easily disturbed by day; with a peak at light of
244. (F Solly)
Monday 11th June 2007 Dumpton Thanet
Good numbers of moths last night 72 Hart & Dart
being the largest number in the trap Diamond-back Moths down to 24 Waved Umber, The
Snout, Small
Square Spot recorded and the 1st Clancy’s Rustic of this year.
(Gadget)
Saturday 9th June 2007 Westgate Thanet & Shuart/Netherhale area
Quite a few moths last night (50 species), including a Buttoned Snout,
a Snout, a Clancy’s Rustic, 4 Dioryctria abietella,
1 Wormwood Pug, 1 Lime Hawk Moth, 1 Light Arches, 1 Pyrausta
aurata, 1 Green Pug, 1 Waved Umber, 1 Small
Square Spot and 3 L-album Wainscot, but only 52 Heart &
Darts. I walked around the Shuart/Netherhale area on Friday evening
and there were hundreds of Diamond-back Moths and about 30 Painted
Ladies. (Tim Hodge)
Friday 8th June 2007 Westgate Thanet
My traps are turning into a two trick pony. The first
trick is to attract Heart & Darts, with another 73 last night.
The second is to attract Pearly Underwings. My spies tell me that
there has been muttering in the ranks about the number of Pearly
Underwings I've been catching this spring, and that they are really Turnip
Moths. Well, I attach photos of both of these species caught last
night. An apology and a donation to my favourite charity will suffice.
Other than that, my second Dioryctria abietella of the
spring, 15 Diamond-back Moths and singles of Treble Lines, L-album
Wainscot and Dark Arches, not a great deal else. (Tim Hodge)
Thursday 7th June 2007 Dumpton Thanet
A reasonable
number of moths about on the night 6th June the most noteworthy was 152 Diamond-back Moths,
28 species was made up by the usual suspects for this time of
year. (Gadget)
Tuesday 5th June 2007 Westgate Thanet
Rather windy and cool last night, although there were still a reasonable
number of moths about, including 1 Figure of Eighty, 1 Dusky
Brocade, 8 Diamond-back Moths, 1 Mottled Pug, 1 Freyer’s
Pug, 39 Heart & Dart, 1 Sycamore and 1 Grey
Dagger. I’ve also attached a photo of yesterday’s Clancy’s
Rustic.
(Tim
Hodge)
Monday 4th
June 2007 Westgate Thanet
Migrant’s overnight included 2 Pearly Underwings, 5 Silver Ys
and 5 Diamond-back Moths, whilst an early Clancy’s Rustic
might have been locally bred? A count of 6 Mottled Rustic is high
for my garden, whilst the total of 38 species was made up by the usual
suspects.
(Tim
Hodge)
Monday 4th
June 2007 Westgate Thanet
Numbers and variety are gradually increasing, including 81 Heart &
Darts last night, when I recorded 190 moths of 45 species including Sycamore,
the Flame and Treble Brown Spot. (Tim Hodge)
Saturday 2nd June 2007 Newington Thanet
A
poorish catch overnight spiced up with the capture of 2 Dioryctria
abietella - I'm lucky to catch two in a year so a pair of the
little blighters in one night aint too bad for my back garden. The only
other thing
'new in' was a Thistle Ermine... yawn!
(Phil M)
Friday 1st June 2007 Newington Thanet
Night
of the 31st May 2007 Good numbers of moths considering I didn’t empty
the traps until late afternoon and both had been left out in the sunlight.
New things included Bee Moth, 2 Yellow-barred Brindle, Green Pug
and Straw Dot. Other 'bits' included 2 Treble Lines, 1 Shears
and a Pearly Underwing. Quite a few species were into double
figures 56 Heart and Darts the most common thing. (Phil M)
