Moth Nights with RSPB

Friday 30th June 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 29/6/2006 Despite the warm day, an easterly breeze and clear night meant that the temperature dropped rapidly leading to a cool night. Kingsgate was very poor both species and numbers. Pegwell faired better but still disappointing numbers. The first of the few migrants in the trap was surprisingly a Scar Bank Gem (first for Kent), the only other migrants were 2 Bordered Straw, single Dark Sword-grass and Pearly Underwing and about 10 Silver Y. (F Solly)

Tuesday 27th June 2006 Monkton Nature Reserve

as well as good numbers of Six-spot Burnet Moths (adults and caterpillars). My now very old Clearwing pheromone lures proved to still be effective with a number of male Six-belted Clearwings attracted. The most impressive thing noted however was the rather stunning Tortrix moth - Commophila aeneana. Other micros included; Aethes tesserana, Dichrorampha petiverella, Dacuminatana and the plume Platyptilia pallidactyla. (F Solly)

Sunday 25th June 2006 Garden Dumpton Thanet

Within the past week moths recording in my garden, Hawk-moths were Elephant Hawkmoth, Popular Hawkmoth, Lime Hawk Moth and Eyed Hawk Moth, with Gold Spot, Burnish Brass, Cream-Spot Tiger with a count of 5 Hummingbird Hawk moths at different time around the garden feeding on the honeysuckle. (Gadget)

Sunday 25th June 2006 Pegwell & Kingsgate Traps

Night of 24/6/2006 A lot more moths in the Pegwell Trap last night (Kingsgate didn't fare well due to the NE breeze). Probably the best night of the year in species terms but only residents. Highlights from a Thanet perspective were Beautiful Golden Y (rarely taken here) and Beautiful China-mark - the first I have taken on Thanet (F Solly)

Sunday 25th June 2006 Garden Newington Thanet

Though a disappointing night (last night) numbers wise for moths I did get a little bit of quality in the shape of Chilo Phragmitella, Lilac Beauty and
Magpie Moth. Back up things included Lime Hawk Moth, Cream Shouldered Green Pea etc. The past few nights have turned up Sharp-angled Peacock on 22nd and Elephant Hawk Moth on 23rd.(Phil M)

Sunday 25th June 2006 Elvington Garden this morning

The trap held the best numbers so far, also my fist Lime Hawk moth of the year, 3 Netted Pug, 2 Small Elephant Hawkmoth. (TRP)

Friday 23 rd June 2006 Garden Dumpton Thanet

Night of Thursday 22nd June 2006 amidst the expected array of common species I recorded my first Scarce Bordered Straw of the year and also my fist Barred Yellow (actually in the trap) - Dylan

Very little of note going on in the garden the past 2 nights - a handful of Silver Y's and a dozen plus Diamond Back's plus first's (of 2006) of Light Arches and Purple Bar. (Phil M)
