Sunday 25th July 2010 Kingsgate and Pegwell Traps
15/7 - 24/7. A scattering of migrants turning up at Kingsgate and
Pegwell whilst my garden remains an interest free zone. Splendid Brocades
now total 8 (another trash species) and another of the plume
Cnaemidophorus rhododactyla at Pegwell puts them perilously close - they
are nic though! Other bits have included 7 Tree-lichen Beauty, single
Small Mottled Willow and a Plume Fan-foot (Pegwell). A
scattering of Dark Sword-grass and noticeable increases in Silver
Ys and Rush Veneers. Sussex Emerald finally put in a long awaited
appearance. The pick of the micros was a Conobathra tumidana
at Pegwell on 20th. Residents of local interest (at least up on the
chalk) have included: Rosy Wave, Ruddy Carpet, Brown Scallop and
Slender Pug. Aphelia viburnana (Bilberyy Tortrix!) finally
made it into the Pegwell trap presumably having wandered all the way from
saltmarsh where it is in places common. Phyliss has been off-line for some
time but had a Scar Bank Gem on 14th (F Solly)
Thursday 15th July 2010 Pegwell Trap
Night of 14/7. A very strong SW wind and showers, very few moths as a
consequence. Not a complete write off, the stunning Plume -
Cnaemidophorus rhododactyla was in the Pegwell trap. Another species
which if I had such a thing was on the desperate to see list - it was
however transferred to the hypothetical life list as I saw one last weekend
when helping out with the Obs traps. (F Solly)
Wednesday 14th July 2010 Pegwell, Kingsgate Traps & Garden
9th - 13th. Good numbers of moths at Pegwell, less at Kingsgate and hell
in the garden from hell. A Vestal at Pegwell on the 11th is sadly
the 'pick' of the migrants. Other bits of local interest at Pegwell include:
Scorched Wing, a site record 6 Privet Hawks on 10th,
Round-winged Muslin, 2 Rosy Footman, Minor Shoulder-knot,
Small Ranunculus, Tree-lichen Beauty, Lunar-spotted Pinion, Slender Brindle,
2 Clancy's Rustics and a Dotted Fan-foot. An aberrant
Swallow-tail on 13th was also of minor interest. Lots more micros but
nothing of any great shakes; Syncopacma taeniolella was new
and therefore the pick I guess. Kingsgate has just had a reasonable
selection of expected species whilst the bit you have been waiting for - the
garden from hell - a Pempelia genistella on the 9th,
momentarily lifting it's awful and deserved reputation. (F Solly)
Friday 9th July 2010 Kingsgate, Pegwell and Home Traps
Bits and pieces in the moth
traps so far this month although mostly unexciting. Numbers have generally
picked up, though Geos on the whole remain rather poor. The more interesting
bits from Kingsgate include; Bright Wave, Red-necked Footman, Sand Dart,
Striped Wainscot and up to 5 Vitula biviella. At Pegwell,
Ground Lackey, Sandy Carpet, Lilac Beauty, 2 Red-necked Footman,
Scarce Black Arches (7th), Green Arches (6th), Splendid
Brocade (6th), Plain and Beautiful Golden Ys (both on the 1st).
Several Nyctegretis lineana, Anerastia lotella and
Cochylis molliculana, single Trachycera marmorea, Vitula
biviella and Epagoge grotiana. Single Aroga
velocella on 2nd and 7th are the first I have had on Thanet. The
gargen from hell has managed Nemapogon clematella, Garden Dart, Small
Ranunculus and an early (for me) Tree-lichen Beauty (8th). (F

Sunday 4th July 2010 St Peters, Broadstairs
This Swallow-tailed Moth was found on the nets in my bedroom today.
It shall be released later. (Simon P)
Saturday 3rd July 2010 Newington Ramsgate
Lots of moths overnight - the highlights being: 1 Vapourer, 1 Lime
Hawk Moth, 2 Privet Hawk Moths, 1 Eyed Hawk Moth, 1
Pale Prominent, 1 Maple Prominent, 2 Short Cloaked Moths,
3 Cream Bordered Green Pea's and 1 Clancy's Rustic.

Friday 2nd July 2010 Newington Ramsgate
A bit disappointing overnight though there were lots of moths coming to the
traps all night long. The pick of the catch were singles of Leopard Moth,
Short Cloaked Moth, Knotgrass, 3 Varied Coronets and 4
Barred Yellow's which is a good amount for here. Probably the most
unusual thing I caught was the rather uninteresting Pyralid Platyes
cerusella which are not an annual moth to the garden. Sorry I
mentioned it! (Phil M)
Thursday 1st July 2010 Eastry
A bit cooler this morning early, but still good numbers of moths on the
wing overnight. Total 235 macros of 50 species in the garden trap,
including new for season Swallow-tailed Moth and Purple Bar.
Other notables, Double Square-spot, Triple-spotted Clay, Green
Silver-lines, and Small Fan-foot. Quads of Light Arches
this morning against 43 Dark Arches, a new Angle Shades
was the first for over a month, (Bill Martin)
Thursday 1st July 2010 Newington Ramsgate
Amongst the hoards of common moths overnight I came across 1 Brown Silver
Line, 1 Treble Brown Spot, 1 Small Emerald, 2 Barred
Yellow's, 1 Yarrow Pug, 1 Grey Pug, 1 Bright Wave,
1 Engrailed, 1 Buff Arches, 1 Round Winged Muslin, 1
Clay and a Cream Bordered Green Pea. (Phil M)
