Thursday 31st July 2008 Lydden
Moths at Lydden were limited to a couple of
Straw Belles, lots of Six-spot Burnets, a single
Pyrausta nigrata, a scattering of Pyrausta aurata,
Acleris asperana, Oncocera semirubella and
the plume Merrifieldia baliodactyla. (F Solly)
Thursday 31st July
2008 Newington Thanet
A pretty disappointing
catch numbers wise in the garden overnight - especially so considering
the high temperature, which held up all night. The pick of the bunch
were 2 nice Garden Tigers a once common thing which has nigh on
disappeared from my garden in recent years. Other thing of note included
singles of Pammene aurata, Wax Moth, Engrailed,
V Pug, Currant Pug, Langmaid's Yellow Underwing
and Rosy Minor. (Phil M)
Wednesday 30th July 2008 Beltinge
Night 29/7 - fewer moths last night but a few
reasonable ones included a Chocolate-tip, Oak Hook-tip, Oak Eggar,
Haworth's Pug, Herald and Mullein Wave. (Barry H)
Tuesday 29th July
2008 Beltinge
Night 28/7 - hopes
were raised when I picked up the first tray to find a Scarce
Chocolate-tip, which is a new site record, migrant or wanderer, who
knows. The rest of the contents were pretty bland a Dark Sword-grass,
a Lesser-spotted Pinion, a Reed Dagger, a Currant Pug
and a Bordered Sallow, which have been very scarce here this
year. (Barry H)
Monday 28th July 2008 Kingsgate & Pegwell
Traps
Night of 27/7, Less moffs last night for no
apparent reason, particularly at Kingsgate although Coronet and Reed
Dagger are both notable for the site, Better variety at Pegwell. As
I lifted the first tray, a colourful flash from the underside was the
long awaited Jersey Tiger, although views of it flying off were
disappointing. Other bits included; 2 Tree-lichen Beauties, 1
Brown Scallop (very rare on Thanet), 1 Canary-shouldered Thorn,
1 Round-winged Muslin, 3 Garden Tigers, 1 Star-wort, 4
Crescents, 1 Rosy Rustic and 1 Gold Spot. (F Solly)
Monday 28th July 2008 Beltinge
Night 27/7 - still no signs of real migration here,
a few bits included a Reed Dagger, 2 Nut-tree Tussock, 2
Mouse Moths and a Copper Underwing. (Barry H)
Saturday 26th July 2008 Westgate Thanet
I had an invasion of the little people last night,
with 65 Cameraria ohridella (Horse-chestnut Leaf Miner),
10 Apple Leaf Miner, 8 Phyllocnistis unipunctella,
2 Ectoedemia decentella and 1 Bucculatrix thoracella.
I thought I saw Gadget hiding behind one of them but I couldn’t be sure.
Other than that a Small Ranunculus a Pale Prominent, 6
Water Veneers, Magpie, Small Waved Umber and 4
Campion. (Tim H)

Night 24/7 - as is the usual story lately, lots of
moths but nothing great, best was a Cresent (Barry H)
Friday 25th July 2008 East Blean
Late News
Night of 22/7. Three hours trapping at East Blean,
deeper into the wood than normal, in an area of dense Hornbeam/Oak
canopy and no understorey. As far as this year goes, a reasonable
variety although very poor numbers, particularly Rosy Footman -
only 1, typically hundreds at this time of year. A goodie - one from my
desperate to see list (that is if I keep lists) and if you view the
photo a rather sad list. I was very pleased with the Triangle,
interestingly weird, although any future captures will doubtless be dull
and boring! Any way, to keep that giant amongst dwarves happy and to
stop him moaning for a few minutes I have done a complete list - as
boring to write and it is for you to read - so no winners there.

Thursday 24th July 2008 Westgate Thanet
I've been away for a few days but put my traps on
last night, and was rewarded with a Toadflax Brocade and a very
small micro called Bucculatrix thoracella, both of which
were new for the garden. A Plain Pug, Shaded Pug, 2 Cypress Pugs, 3
Ruby Tigers and a Mother of Pearl were new for the year,
whilst numbers of some of the commoner garden species were reasonable.
(Tim H)
Thursday 24th July 2008 Beltinge
Night 23/7 - a damper night with an easterly breeze
which cut the number of moths, Notable here was an Olive, other
bits included Wormwood, Yarrow, Plain and Tawny Speckled Pugs.
(Barry H)
Wednesday 23rd July 2008 Beltinge
Night 22/7- another Plumed Fan-foot last
night, the only other noteworthy moths were 3 Festoons, 4
Small Scallops and a Bordered Pug. 71 species of macro-moth
was the best total of the year so far. (Barry H)
Friday 18th July 2008 Westgate Thanet
A Fen Wainscot was new for the garden, and
other bits included a July Highflyer, 2 Small Emerald, Scarce
Footman, Sycamore and what appears to be Coleophora
albitarsella. (Tim H)
Friday 18th July 2008 Kingsgate & Pegwell
Traps
It bit of better variety in the moff traps the last couple of nights,
although total numbers plummeted again last night. Nothing to get over
excited about, Ruby Tigers and Chinese Characters
reappearing, a few Prominents - Maple, Pale, Swallow and Iron, a
selection of the usual Hawks etc. Of slightly more interest for Thanet
were Ruddy Carpet, Langmaid's Yellow Underwing, Reddish Light Arches,
another Caloptilia hauderi type (at Pegwell),
Acrocercops brongniardella and Eucosma metzneriana.
The 'star' moth was the hideously boring Yellow V Moth at Pegwell
on 16/7 of which there have been very few Kent records. (F Solly)
Thursday 17th July 2008 Dumpton area
I have almost given up on mothing - it's so
depressing! A few bits have started to turn up so I thought I'd share
them. A couple of Small Ranunculus (14th & 16th) and
the Engrailed (14th) a new moth for the garden. A
Pine Hawk-moth was picked up (dead) in the Sericol
carpark (15th) and is by far the most interesting moth of 2008, thus
far! (Dylan)
Thursday 17th July 2008 Beltinge
A Plumed Fan-foot last night was a bit of
break from the relentless boredom of recent weeks, or was it months!
(Barry H)
Wednesday 16th July 2008 Pegwell Trap
Night of 15/7. Rather frustratingly, for the last
few years I and more recently Tim have been catching what appear to be
dead ringers for Caloptilia hauderi. Apparently though there is
an uncommon form of Caloptilia semifascia that is similar,
although I can find no references to this and we don't take the normal
form. Attempts to confirm the id have so far been unsuccessful. The
latest one (the first this year) was in my garden last night. (F Solly)
Wednesday 16th July 2008 Westgate Thanet
Quite a few moths last night, including
Tree-lichen Beauty, Least Yellow Underwing, Caloptilia
hauderi and Argyresthia goedartella, which is a
rather attractive moth, I Think (Tim H)
Tuesday 15th July 2008 Westgate Thanet
It's been quiet in my garden recently. A few odds
and ends over the past week have included Aspilapteryx
tringipennella, July Highflyer, Small Blood-vein,
Dark Sword Grass, Pammene fasciana, Lime &
Poplar Hawk Moths, Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing,
Nutmeg, Small Ranunculus, Campion and The Spectacle. (Tim H)
Friday 11th July 2008 Kingsgate & Pegwell
Traps
Less dull than usual at Kingsgate last night, a better variety of the
usual seasonal suspects although still in woeful numbers. A bit of spice
always makes things less dull of course and this was provided by what
appears to be a Jersey Mocha - it will probably need to be
chopped up to confirm. Pegwell was once again affected by the wind and
was rather unremarkable - 2 Yarrow Pugs is notable for the site.
(F Solly)
Thursday 10th July 2008 Pegwell Trap
Night of 9/7. A Dark Umber at Pegwell was a real treat on the
Concrete Isle, other than that a small influx of Silver Ys and a
couple of Dark Sword-grass were the only things amongst a very
poor selection of the usual junk, (F Solly)
Wednesday 9th July 2008 Beltinge
Night 8/7 - best was a Lead-coloured Pug, a
new site species. Appearing here for the first time this year were
Drinker, Brown Line Bright-eye, Rosy Minor, Shaded Broad-bar and
Least Yellow Underwing. (Barry H)
Tuesday 8th July 2008 Pegwell Trap
The last two nights have perhaps been my worst July moff nights
particularly at Pegwell, although there was a bit of local interest
there last night (7/7) in the form of a Miller (a very infrequent
visitor to these parts) and a Blue-bordered Carpet - a much
declined species. Other than that a Dark Sword-grass - something
of a rarity this year and a nice Catoptria falsella were
the pick of the very few moffs in the trap. Elsewhere it was just dull,
(F Solly)
Tuesday 8th July 2008 Beltinge
Night 7/7 - at last a migrant, a Rush Veneer
in the trap last night, the only other thing of note being a
Lunar-spotted Pinion, (Barry H)
Sunday 6th July 2008 Beltinge
Night 5/7 - still no
real signs of migration in the trap apart from a few Silver Y and
Diamond-back Moth, A couple of reasonables included Dotted
Fan-foot and Southern Wainscot. (Berry H)
Saturday 5th July
2008 Westgate Thanet
A Dark Sword Grass
was my first of the year, whilst a few other bits included Small
Ranunculus, Dusky Sallow, Clancy's Rustic, Cinnabar, Brown-tail, 2
Diamond-backs, Silver-Y, Eyed Hawk-moth, 3 Light Arches
and a nice fresh Sycamore. (Tim H)
Friday 4th July 2008 Red-belted Clearwing

Red-belted Clearwing in flight, (Gadget)
Friday 4th July 2008
Sandwich Bay
The Moth called Bright Wave was seen on the
wing today over at Sandwich Bay. (Jason M)
Wednesday 2nd July 2008 Stone Bay Thanet
A lunchtime visit to Stone Bay, Broadstairs, sun,
sand and sea - horrible. Anyway the purpose of the visit was to look for
the local tortrix Selania leplastriana, which was quickly
found flying amongst its foodplant - Wild Cabbage at the cliff base.
That done I quickly left the 'delights' of the golden sands. (F Solly)
Lots of moths last night, with 77 species, a very good
total for my garden. Nothing unexpected, but Short-cloaked Moth and
Ancylis achatana were new for the garden, and other bits
included Ectoedemia decentella, 5 Caloptilia
rufipennella, 2 Diamond-backs, Coleophora
mayrella, 3 Batia lunaris, Plum Fruit Moth,
Udea prunalis, Meal Moth, Clouded Silver, Eyed Hawk Moth,
2 Dun-bars and quite a few of all the usual suspects. (Tim H)
Night 1/7 - not contributed for a while now, so here
goes, I suppose it’s the same old story quite a few moths but only the
regular stuff. Last night was better here and 69 species of macro was the
best total this year, again regular moths the best bits were as follows:-
Small Fan-foot, Double Square-spot, Yarrow Pug, Orange Moth, Clancy's Rustic
and Clouded Border. With Scarce Footman, Small Fan-footed Wave, Buff
Arches, Brown-tail, Common Rustic and Swallowtail all appearing
for the first time this year, Pyralids were well represented with the pick
of the bunch being Schoenobius gigantella, Donacaula
forficella, 3 European Corn Borer, Phycita roborella
and 2 Trachycera marmorea. A large Plume type moth was taken
home for ID as it seemed and was very worn but close scrutiny allowed me to
identify it as Platyptilia ochrodactyla a new site record. The
previous night 30/6 produced the first site record of the Four-dotted
Footman. The only other species worth a mention was the first site
record of Striped Wainscot on the 25/6. (Barry H)
Night of 30/6. Still no great shakes in the moff traps,
Lots of the dross Noctuids - mostly Heart and Darts, Heart and Clubs
and Large Yellow Underwings at Kingsgate but little variety, Better
variety at Pegwell including Eyed, Poplar, Privet and Elephant Hawks,
Short Cloaked Moths, Southern Wainscot, Small Clouded Brindle, Dog's
Tooth and Rosy Wave. At long last a Dark Sword-grass - a
very worn specimen. A notable pyralid for Thanet was a Trachycera
marmorea - only the 2nd or 3rd record I believe. (F Solly)
