Monday 30th July 2007 Beltinge
Another cool and clear night but a Blair's Mocha
was a nice surprise also 4 Rusty Dot Pearls. A good range of
residents but in low numbers. Pick of the bunch a Sallow Kitten and
a Southern Wainscot. (Barry H)
Sunday 29th July 2007 Beltinge
A cool night but still 43 species of macros, best
bits were a fresh White-point, probably the first of the second
generation, 1 O. semirubella and a late
Lime Hawk Moth. (Barry H)
Sunday 29th July 2007 Newington Thanet
Another
wet night with not too much going on. I did manage a Dusky Sallow, Oak
Nycteoline and a Chilo phragmitella. Otherwise all the
normal stuff in less than the normal amounts. (Phil M)
Saturday 29th July 2007 Newington Thanet
Slightly better overnight even though it did rain right through until
first light. Not a massive catch but a nicer variation of stuff, which
included a new moth for my back, garden a Chocolate-tip. Other
'bits' included singles of Maiden's Blush, Red Twin-spot Carpet,
Grey Pug, Vapourer, and Meal Moth etc. Little to
shout about in between my last report and the overnight catch - a Small
Ranunculus on the 26th perhaps worthy of mention?? Perhaps
not - you choose? (Phil M)
Saturday 29th July 2007 Beltinge
In
the trap last night 2 Rusty Dot Pearl, and of note: 1 Evergestis
extimalis and the first site record of Buff Footman. Five
species of Prominent with singles of Maple, Swallow, Pale,
Iron and Pebble. (Barry H)
Saturday
28th July 2007 Dumpton Thanet
Moths worth
noting within the past ten days, Campion, Green Silver lines, Rusty Dot Pearl,
Straw Dot, Dark Sword-grass, Rush Veneer, Pale Prominent, Silver Y's, Buff-tip, Small Ranunculus,
Small China Mark,
Clay, Ear Moth, Diamond-backed Moths, Caloptilia elongella.

Saturday
28th July 2007 Beltinge
Last
night produced a few migrant types in the trap with 9 Rusty Dot Pearls,
2 Rush Veneer, 13 Silver Y and 1 Dark Sword-grass. As
for the last few nights, each night has seen the odd Rusty Dot Pearl
and Rush Veneer with singles of Delicate and Reed Dagger.
Pyralids are starting to interest me again and I took one that I had not
seen before, it looked the same shape as S. palealis, which
is common here, pale yellowish with a heavily marked underwing which lead
me to identify it as S.verticalis a new site species.
Residents have been ticking over. New for the year were Copper
Underwing, Red Twin-spot Carpet, Rosy Rustic and Mouse.

Friday
27th July 2007 Westgate Thanet
Macros have been completely awful in my garden over the past week, the
only moths of note being a Webb’s Wainscot and two Dusky
Sallows on the 19th, three Latticed Heaths on the 22nd
and a Shark on the 24th. Micros have been slightly
better, with totals over the past seven days including 1 Sciota
adelphella, 1 Cameraria ohridella (Horse-chestnut
Leaf Miner), 1 Mompha epilobiella, 1 Rush Veneer, 1 Pempelia
formosa, 2 Oncocera semirubella, 2 Conobathra
repandana, 1 Rusty Dot Pearl, 1 Ringed China Mark, 4
Cydia splendana, 1 Grapholita funebrana, 3 Spilonota
ocellana, 1 Cochylis atricapitana and another Caloptilia
hauderi. (Tim H)
Wednesday
25th July 2007 Newington Thanet
Over
a week since I joined in so here goes... Slightly better overnight with a
few garden scarcities turning up with singles of Yarrow Pug, Small
Scallop, Lang maid’s Yellow Underwing and a Wormwood making
it to the MV's. The week prior had been dire (I should have been a
poet?) with the highlights being Wormwood Pug, V Pug, a male Oak
Eggar, Elephant Hawk-moth and not very much else. Micros have
included: Ypsolopha scabrella, Nephoterix angustella, Plytes
alpinella, Epilblema foenella etc. Surely the worst summer of all
time for moths? (Phil M)
Monday 23rd
July 2007 Canterbury Late
news
Convolvulus
Hawk Moth (Agrius) a glamorous visitor to our Canterbury garden.
18th July 2007. (Adrian Lewis)
Saturday 22nd July 2007 Beltinge
The last few nights have seen a total of 12 noctuella
and 5 Udea ferrugalis but not much else of note in the trap.
On the whole rather poor. (Barry H)
Thursday 19th July 2007 SBBOT
The SBBOT moth trap yesterday - for night of 18/7/07 - as dismal as the
Thanet traps with a very poor haul in terms of numbers and species. A Scarce
Chocolate-tip was a surprise but other than that, 'notables' plummeted
to the likes of Archer's and White-line Darts, Garden
Tigers and Oak Eggar. Very few micros with Monochroa palustrella
being the only thing of note. (F Solly)
Thursday 19th July 2007 Dumpton Thanet
Moths to note: 2 Oak Eggar, (male &
female) 1 Garden Tiger very tatty a very nice Small China Mark and
a Marble Green. (Gadget)
Thursday 19th July 2007 Westgate Thanet
Still
rather quiet on the macro front over the last few days, the best bits
being singles of Star-wort, Treble-bar, Dusky Sallow, The Herald,
Cloaked Minor, Dwarf Cream Wave and Yellow Shell. Much more
interesting on the micro front, but if you don't like a long list of Latin
names stop reading now! Bits of interest during the last five days
included Tineola bassiliella, Caloptilia hauderi, Plutella
porrectella, Orthotaelia sparganella, Batia unitella, Carpatolechia
fugitivella, 3 Pexicopia malvella (Hollyhock Seed
Moth), 4 Lozotaeniodes formosanus, 4 Cnephasia longana,
5 Acleris forsskaleana, 2 Pammene aurita, 8 Pammene
regiana, Pammene fasciana, Dichrorampha alpinana, 2 Acentria
ephemerella (Water Veneer), Pyralis farinalis (Meal
Moth), Aglossa pinguinalis (Large Tabby), 3 Conobathra
rependana and 3 Oncocera semirubella. (Tim H)
Wednesday 18th July 2007 Beltinge
A reasonable night produced 61 species of macro-moth
in the trap. Highlights were 2 noctuella, 1 Rusty Dot Pearl
and 1 Festoon. (Barry H)
Tuesday 17th July 2007 Newington Thanet
Well it has picked up a wee bit over the past few days though luckily I'm
not getting anywhere near the Large Yellow Underwings old Slim's
getting on the other side of the island. Since I last 'reported in' on the
11th
I've have procured the following beasties: 1 Phycitodes binaviella
and 1 Mathew's Wainscot on 12th, 1 Rhyacionia pinicolana,
1 Oncocera semirubella, 1 Orthopygia gluacinalis
and 1 Clancy's Rustic on 13th, 1 Cochylis atricapitana,
2 Elephant Hawk-moths and 1 Gymnancyla canella on
14th, 1 Pammene fasciana, 1 Grapholita janthinana,
1 Oncocera semirubella and 1 Bright Wave on 15th plus
2 Kent Black Arches and a Vestal on 16th. Very few migrants
showing - other than the Vestal I’ve only taken 1 Rusty Dot and a
handful of Silver Y/Diamond-back's this past few days. (Phil M)
Tuesday 17th July 2007 Beltinge
Still
a nice selection of moths in the trap and perhaps a hint of migration with
3 noctuella, 12 Diamond-backs, Dark Sword Grass and some tatty Silver
Y. Of the residents a Pine Hawk was a new site record and a Rosy
Footman is pretty unusual here. (Barry H)
Monday 16th July 2007 Beltinge
Night
of the 15 July. A much better night despite a torrential
thunderstorm at dusk, in total 68 species of macro-moth adding up to 542
moths. Highlights were few but included a Lunar-spotted Pinion a
new site species, also a Lesser-spotted Pinion, Oak Nycteoline, Clouded
Border, Plain Pug, Shark and Star-wort. Also 157 Large Yellow
Underwings- nice! (Barry H)
Sunday 15th July 2007 Leaf-Miners
Oh no! Just as you thought it was safe to log on, there’s more of those
darned leaf-miners to bore you rigid. Another batch, it like having a
birthday everyday but without the people so better. These three critters
were all from mines along Pegwell Cliff-top, Phyllonorycter
tristrigella and Phyllonorycter schreberella from Elm leaves and Phyllonorycter
spinicolella from Blackthorn. Don't worry, I've almost exhausted
my current batch of mines - relief is on its way. (F Solly)
Sunday 15th July 2007 Beltinge
Male Plumed Fan-foot taken overnight the first
site record. Not much else of note in the trap tho a male Oak Eggar
was a surprise. (Barry H)
Saturday 14th July 2007 Westgate Thanet
A
bit better last night, with nearly 300 moths of 60 species. Bits of
interest over the last few days include The Engrailed, Buff-tip,
Clouded Border, Buff Arches, Privet Hawk-moth, Poplar Hawk-moth, Eyed
Hawk-moth, Pearly Underwing and Straw Dot, whilst Large
Yellow Underwing zoomed up to 105 overnight. A few new micros included
Caloptilia hauderi (a rare moth in Kent, I believe), 4 Borkhausenia
fuscescens, 3 Pammene fasciana, Grapholita
funebrana, Schoenobius gigantella, 3 Conobathra rependana,
Oncocera semirubella, 2 Pempelia formosa and Euzophera
pinguis. (Tim H)
Friday 13th July 2007 Phyllonorycter
leaf mines
Pick of the bunch (at least I think so) of the recent leaf mining
blighters is the rather splendid Phyllonorycter cydoniella
which emerged on 11/7 from a mine on Crab Apple at East Blean. The rather
dowdy Phyllonorycter quercifoliella from Oak at East Blean
also emerged on the 11th. (F Solly)
Wednesday 11th July 2007 Newington Thanet
The
poor run of weather continues. Moth numbers are very low with very little
of any note. Overnight I took a female Small China Mark, Conobathra
repandana, White-spotted Pug, Kent Black Arches, Leopard
Moth etc amongst the dregs of an otherwise dull catch. Other recent
stuff has included an Engrailed, Ruddy Carpet, Double Square-spot,
Cream Bordered Green Pea, 3 Platyptilia pallidactyla, Vine
Moth and a Eupocilia angustana. I did catch 3 Poplar
Hawk's one night, which is unusual to get so many - normally just get
singles over here. It's gotta improve surely?? (Phil M)
Monday 9th July 2007 Dumpton Thanet
Much better the last couple of nights' and the fist Privet
Hawk-moth for the garden, Broad-barred White
(Gadget)
Sunday 8th July 2007 Westgate Thanet
Much better the last couple of nights. A Buff Footman was the best
moth, rare on Thanet, I’m told. Other bits of interest included Dingy
Shears, Small China-mark, Pyrausta despicata, Light Arches, Smoky
Wainscot, 2 Dun-bars, 2 Scalloped Oaks, Varied Coronet, Lychnis, Campion,
Broad-barred White, Square-spot Rustic, Brown-tail, Clouded Silver,
Peppered Moth, Small Fan-footed Wave and Swallow-tailed Moth.

Sunday 8th July 2007 Beltinge
As
my previous spell at mothing ended in 1997 the Clancy's Rustic was not
around but nowadays it was a question of time before this species got onto
the site list and today was the day, the first of many I assume. A better
night with numbers up but still woeful for early July. Other moths
included a Maple Prominent, a Swallowtail and a Rosy
Minor. (Barry H)
Saturday 7th July 2007 Phyllonorycter
leaf mines
Due to the poor weather over the last week or so, I took to collecting a
few Phyllonorycter leaf mines (as you are probably aware) for a bit of
fun. Great excitement each morning as I checked the pots for new
emergences (for those that know me, don't worry, the excitement was not
perceptible and passed within a nano second). This morning saw a further
three of the attractive critters emerge (one as yet has refused to be
photographed). Phyllonorycter kleemannella from Alder leaves
at Monkton Nature Reserve, Phyllonorycter lautella from Oak
leaves at East Blean and Phyllonorycter viminiella from
Salix at Stodmarsh. (F Solly)
Saturday 7th July 2007 Beltinge
The
last few days have been, let's face it has been rubbish, as my trap site
is in an exposed coastal area any moderate wind between west and northeast
produces very few moths. Last night was a touch better with singles of Privet
& Elephant Hawk Moth both not common at all here. Other moths
included a Herald, a Broad-barred White and an Iron
Prominent. Oh for a hot Southerly wind! (Barry H)
Thursday 5th July 2007 Monkton NR Thanet
Another nice micro - Phyllonorycter cerasicolella, bred
from a mine on Cherry, collected from Monkton Nature Reserve on 28th June.
(F Solly)
Wednesday 4th July 2007 Westgate Thanet
Blimey,
is it useless, or what? A very few macro bits over the last few days
included Dog's Tooth, Delicate, Varied Coronet and Smoky
Wainscot on the 30th, a Swallow-tailed Moth on the 1st and a Clancy's
Rustic, a Delicate and a Varied Coronet on the 2nd. A
few new micros for the year include Phtheochroa inopiana,
Argyresthia pruniella, Teleiodes vulgella, Eucosma cana and Yponomeuta
evonymella, whilst 1-2 Caloptilia rufipenella have
been in the traps on most nights and there was another Zeiraphera
isertana last night. (Tim H)
Tuesday 3rd July 2007 Monkton
NR Thanet
I collected some leaf mines from Monkton Nature Reserve last week; Phyllonorycter
lantanella emerged on 3 July from a mine on Wayfaring Tree. (F

Monday 2nd July 2007 Newington Thanet
The awful weather continues to ruin an otherwise harmless pursuit!! It's
bad out there - real bad! Anyway...the past couple of nights have produced
the following: Not very much!! Of note were Barred Straw, Common White
Wave, Early Thorn, Cinnabar, Lime and Poplar Hawk-moth, Purple Bar, Treble
Lines, Lobesia absciana, Chequered Fruit-tree Tortrix,
Lozotaeniodes formosanus, Water Veneer, Crambus
pascuella etc. Top quality has come in the shape of Toadflax
Brocade last night and a Slender Pug on the night previous. The
Brocade was my third garden record, the Pug a new moth for the garden.
(Phil M)
Monday 2nd July 2007 Beltinge
Another 50+-macro species night. Migrant types
included 2 Dark Sword grass and 8 Silver Y. On the resident
front a Peach Blossom was only the second site record, other
species of note were singles of Coxcomb Prominent, Drinker, Eyed Hawk
Moth and the first Marbled Beauty of the year. (Barry H)
Sunday 1st July 2007 Beltinge
My best night so far with 55 species of macro totaling
223 moths. No real migrants tho 15 Silver Y and a Diamond-backed
Moth were trapped. Other bits included an Orange Moth, Dun-bar,
Heart & Club, Maple Prominent, Short-cloaked Moth, Grey Dagger, Least
Yellow Underwing and Burnished Brass. Also of note 8 Kent
Black Arches was a site record. (Barry H)
