Monday
31st July 2006 Garden Newington Thanet
Very poor overnight. The only noteworthy bits were singles of the Pyralids
Pempelia genistella, Euzophera pinguis, the
Tortrix Phtheochroa inopiana and a Ypsolopha nemorella.
Macro numbers were very low with
only 3 species in double figures. Migrant moths were only 8 Silver Y's,
c15 Diamond Backs and a Rush Veneer. (Phil M)

Sunday 30th July 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Trap
Scattering of the usual migrants in the traps the last few nights Bordered
Straw, Scarce Bordered Straw, Small Mottled Willows along with single Vestal
and Ni-Moth. A slight increase in Dark Sword-grass and the odd
presumably of local origin White-point. Resident species have
been rather bland. Odd Langmaid's Yellow Underwing and Small
Ranunculus being the most notable. A male Oak Eggar in the
Kingsgate trap on night of 29/7 is of note. Most
of the Silver Y's being seen by day have now left the Golf Course,
although they can still be seen feeding on Knapweed and Dwarf Thistle
flowers with the occasional Dusky Sallow. (F Solly)
Saturday

Night of 22nd July 2006. A lot fewer moths last night and

selection. Of note at Kingsgate was a Striped Hawk and Scarce

Bordered Straw, 3 Small Mottled Willow and the pyralids
Dioryctria sylvestrella and Psammotis pulveralis.

Sunday 23rd July 2006 Garden Newington
Thanet
A few 'bits' of interest in the traps overnight. A nice example of the
local Pyralid Platyes alpinella was probably pick of the
bunch plus singles of Dog's Tooth, Southern Wainscot - a
moth I haven’t caught in the back garden for 2-3 years and my 3rd garden
example of Double-lobed made one of the traps a bit more noteworthy
as the first trap I emptied, which had
very little in it of any quality. Other things included Dusky Sallow,
Ringed China Mark and Evergestis extimalis. (Phil M)
Saturday 22nd July 2006 Garden

Friday 21st July 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps
Night of 20th July 2006. Back to dross as far as moths were
concerned last night. Kingsgate had lots of Yellow Underwings, 211 Lesser
and 194 Large which always has an adverse effect on the moth trap
contents. The only things of note were 2 Small Mottled Willow, 1 Tree-lichen
Beauty, 2 Reed Dagger and 3 Pempelia genistella
(a pyralid). Also in the trap and of note locally were 2 Eyed
Ladybirds. A lot fewer moths at Pegwell and nothing really of note - 1
Small Mottled Willow and 1 Pempelia genistella being
about it. (F Solly)
Friday 21st July 2006 Garden Elvington

prior to checking the trap, 1
Pine Hawk Moth, 2 Privet Hawk Moth, 1 Elephant
Hawk Moth, 2 Cedar Prominent, 1 Iron
Prominent, 1 Leopard Moth were the best of the
bunch

Thursday

Gigantella and Phycita Roborella. Lots of other
micro's c20 species of Tortrix plus 50+ Diamond Back's and 2 Marasmarcha
Lunaedactyla. I stayed up virtually all night as I thought it might be
good with the wind going round and the cloud cover. (Phil M)
Thursday 20th
July 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps
Night of 19th July 2006. The wind finally shifted a little and the
Kingsgate trap was actually full of moths - 283 of which were Silver
Y's. Wanderers to the area included a Gem, Bordered Straw, Reed
Dagger, Ear and 2 Mere Wainscots being the pick of the bunch.
Off to the Pegwell trap, expecting, as has been the recent norm, for it to
be full - as indeed it was. Wow! There were a remarkable number of quality
moths in the trap. Sitting on the top tray was a fine Dark Crimson
Underwing followed by Clouded Magpie, Dotted Footman, 5 Tree-Lichen
Beauty, Marbled Grey (a tick), Convolvulus Hawk, Ni and the
pyralid Conobathra tumidana. Of lesser quality but of note for the
site were Plain Golden Y, Webb's Wainscot and Small Angle Shades.
(F Solly)
Wednesday
19th July 2006 Garden Newington Thanet
Lots of moths overnight though little to shout about on the quality front.
There must have been a little bit of migration as there were 26 Silver
Y's, 1 Bordered Straw and about 25 Diamond Back's.
Resident species included: 36 Least Carpet, 2 Small Fan-footed
Wave, 2 Ruby Tiger, 46 Lesser Yellow Underwing (yuk!),

Tuesday18th July 2006 Pegwell
trap
Nights of 16/7 and 17/7. Lots of moths in the Pegwell trap the
last two nights although mostly just the usual Thanet mix with no migrants
and little in the way of out of area wanderers. The most notable moths
being Satin Lutestring, Sandy Carpet, Red-necked Footman, Tawny Shears,
True Lover's Knot and Olive. (F Solly)
Tuesday18th July 2006 Garden Westgate
Thanet
Francis has kindly lent me a moth trap, so I had my first ever mothing
session in my back garden in Westgate this morning. I immediately tried to
string a Lunar Yellow Underwing, but after consulting with him-self
realised I had made my first moth misidentification, no doubt to be
followed by many others. I was at a considerable disadvantage in that I
didn’t have a clue what anything was. However, there were a couple of
goodies, one a huge and very active Privet Hawk Moth, the other an Eyed
Hawk Moth. A couple of Swallow-tailed moths were rather
attractive, as were quite a lot of Buff Ermines. Large Yellow
Underwings were the commonest (and most variable?) moth. I let a few
of the drabber things go as I didn’t have time to see what they were.

Monday

Pegwell. The only things of note were a Pine Hawk at Pegwell (a
Thanet rarity) and an Ethmia dodecea in my garden. The Robins
continue to be a nuisance at Pegwell feasting on numerous moths. (F Solly)
Saturday
8th July 2006 Garden Newington Thanet

Wednesday July 5th 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps
Night of 4th July 2006 Another hot and humid night. The
Kingsgate trap continues to disappoint with very poor numbers and species
- nothing of note taken. By contrast the Pegwell Trap was full of moths. A
good selection of the usual suspects plus a Concolorous and Splendid
Brocade, although surprisingly little else in the way of migrants. The
most interesting from a Thanet perspective of the resident species was
probably Lunar and Lesser Spotted Pinion and the micro Nyctegretis
lineana (F Solly)

Monday 3rd July 2006 Garden Newington

Another disappointing night moth-wise overnight with amongst the 40 species of macro moth very little of
any quality. New for 2006 included Wood Carpet, Poplar Grey, Short Cloaked Moth, Bird Cherry Ermine, Cnephasia Longana, Aethes
Beatricella and Zeiraphera Isertana. I also have an
as yet unidentified Geometrid Moth which is hiding somewhere in my front
room - it escaped when I tried to take a photo of it) plus a tiny gold and
white moth which 'monsier Hairy' will have to sort out for me. Other than
a scale perfect male Elephant Hawkmoth and a Meal Moth
nothing worthy of any mention. There was a 'presumed' Harlequin
Ladybird in the trap also. (Phil M)

Saturday July 1st 2006 Garden Newington

Another very disappointing night moth-wise with the best the garden traps
could turn up being singles of Spinach and Varied Coronet.
Otherwise only half reasonable amounts of common moths for the time of
year. (Phil M)
