Moth Nights 2011

Sunday 29th February 2012 Ramsgate

Night of 28/2. Back to reality following last night’s excursion. A round of my three traps on the hell that is the Concrete Isle (Thanet) produced a combined total of 3 moths – all low grade species. (F Solly)

Sunday 29th February 2012 East Blean

Night of 28/2. A 2 ¾hr session at East Blean, in what was supposed to be a cloudy evening but was cloudless throughout – fortunately the temperature held up reasonably well. Richard K announced his arrival with a bugle blast (it’s an American thing) – as usual timing his arrival after all the carrying and setting up had been done. The following delights were recorded during the session: 78 March Moths, 1 Shoulder-stripe, 38 Spring Usher, 12 Dotted Border, 26 Pale Brindled Beauty, 10 Small Brindled Beauty, 1 Engrailed, 1 Red Chestnut, 1 Satellite, 5 Chestnuts and about 60 Tortricodes alternella. (F Solly)

Saturday 25th February 2012 Pegwell Trap

Night of 24/2. A few bits in the Pegwell trap. 1 Spring Usher (my first on Thanet), 2 Pale Brindled Beauty, singles of Common Quaker, Satellite, Chestnut, Dark Chestnut, Emmelina monodactyla and 3 Tortricodes alternella. (F Solly)

Saturday 25th February 2012 Dumpton Thanet

Last night was an improvement in the quality of moth with 2 Chestnuts and just the 1 Emmelina monodactyla (Gadget)

Thursday 23rd February 2012 Pegwell Village

Very slow start to the Mothing year with my first trap set due to the mild conditions and only 1 Tortricodes alternella and 1 Light Brown Apple Moth (Richard Kinzler)

Friday 24th February 2012 Dumpton Thanet

The night of 22nd February, There were two Light Brown Apple Moths within the fist 20 minute's of the mildest night of the year so far, after that nothing not even a fly, hence It's confirmed that my garden is total rubbish and  therefore I put it forward for the new Thanet Moth Trophy (Rubbish Moth Garden on Thanet)  (Gadget)

Friday 24th  February 2012  Eastry

Last night was the mildest night of the year so far, minimum of 9 Celsius, the trap bursting with eleven moths this morning. Pick of the bunch, two Satellite of different variations, first two Hebrew Characters of the season, a couple of Chestnut and a Dark Chestnut. (Bill Martin)

Saturday 18th February 2012 Newington Ramsgate

I caught three moths last night, two of which were macro's, a March Moth and a Dark Chestnut. I have been getting a few Light Brown Apple Moths and Emmelina monodactyla for the past few nights, one of the monodactyla's I found when the snow was still laying on the ground on the night of February 12th! Its the first moth I've yet to see with laying snow even though I have in the past ran the traps (rather stupidly admittedly) in the snow and ice. (Phil M)

Saturday 18th February 2012 East Blean

Night of 17/2. A 2 1/2hr moffing session in East Blean on what was supposed to be a cloudy evening but was often cloudless! The variety was disappointing, though there were good numbers of a limited number of species. 10 March Moth, 6 Dotted Border, 95 Spring Usher, 60 Pale Brindled Beauty, 3 Satellite, 35 Chestnut and about 150 Tortricodes alternella. I also put my garden trap on and caught nothing! (F Solly)
