Moth Nights 2008

Friday 29th February 2008 Leaf Mines

I checked my 'over wintering' leaf mines this morning and despite having kept them outside a number had already emerged (a few for some time as they had unfortunately passed away) - an indicator of the mild winter presumably. Those that had emerged were Phyllonorycter lautella and quercifoliella (Oak leaves from East Blean), Phyllonorycter ragella (Alder leaves from Seaton) and Phyllonorycter quinquegutella (Creeping Willow from Sandwich Bay). As usual, all very exciting. (F Solly)

Friday 22nd February 2008 Pegwell Trap

Night of 21/2. Moffing misery and moaning (of which there will be lots) resumed at Pegwell. Off to a flyer with a Small Brindled Beauty - a Thanet 'tick'. Other bits were an Early Moth, Pale Brindled Beauty and Hebrew Character. Who said Thanet was rubbish? Oh yes, that was me and it is.    (F Solly)

Friday 22nd February 2008 Beltinge

Night of 21/2 - a milder night the minimum temperature a balmy +9 resulted in four moths in the trap. A March Moth was new for the year, 1 Hebrew Character, 1 Common Quaker and 1 Amblyptilia acanthadactyla(Barry H)

It certainly felt like the milder conditions had begun to assert themselves as I cycled to the trap site this morning. A single Dotted Border was the only moth taken. The night before a single Hebrew Character was trapped.  (Barry H)

Tuesday 19th February 2008 Beltinge

Night of 18/2 - a much warmer night, only got down to zero! Still there were two moths in the trap, a new species for the year in the form of an Angle Shades and a single Hebrew Character.  (Barry H)

Monday 18th February 2008 Beltinge

Night of 17/2 - a very cold night here, when I looked at the thermometer at dawn it was -3. So I was somewhat surprised to find 3 moths in the trap, a Chestnut and 2 Hebrew Characters. Looks like some milder conditions are on their way and that should start to see a few more moths in general as we approach March.  (Barry H)

Thursday 14th February 2008 Beltinge

Night of 13/2 - The Easterly drift finally arrived, not quite what the mother ordered but, the trap held 4 Hebrew Characters which was four more moths than I expected! (Barry H)

Monday 4th February 2008 Beltinge

Night of 3/2 - after two blank nights a single Early Moth was taken. The forecast of milder conditions for the coming week, lead me to install the Robinson trap in the garden, it is hoped that the better catch and hold ratio for this type of trap will up the records for the site. Already I have visions of 500+ counts of Large Yellow Underwings!   (Barry H)

Friday 1st February 2008 Beltinge

Night 31/1/01, only one moth at the trap last night but it was a very early, Early Grey, can't recall taking one in January before!  (Barry H)
