2008 Leaf Mines
I checked my 'over wintering' leaf mines this morning and despite having
kept them outside a number had already emerged (a few for some time as they
had unfortunately passed away) - an indicator of the mild winter presumably.
Those that had emerged were Phyllonorycter lautella and
quercifoliella (Oak leaves from East Blean), Phyllonorycter
ragella (Alder leaves from Seaton) and Phyllonorycter
quinquegutella (Creeping Willow from Sandwich Bay). As usual, all

Night of 28/2 - a few
moths last night, 1 Double-striped Pug, 1 March Moth, 1
Pale Brindled Beauty, 5 Common Quaker, 3 Hebrew Character,
2 Amblyptilia acanthadactyla and 1 Emmelina monodactyla.

Night of 27//2 - numbers
wise comfortably the best night of the year so far with 22 moths in the
trap, although the species taken were just common ones. Small Quaker
was new for the year, the rest made up by, 9 Common Quaker, 5
Hebrew Character, 2 Early Grey, 2 Pale Brindled Beauty, 1
Chestnut, 1 March Moth and a single Emmelina monodactyla. (Barry

Wednesday 26th February 2008 Beltinge
Night of 26/2 - calmer but cooler last night and five
moths ventured into the trap, 1 March Moth, 1 Pale Brindled Beauty,
2 Common Quaker and 1 Hebrew Character. (Barry H)

Night of 25/2 - mild but windy and with rain after
midnight produced only two moths 1 March Moth and 1 Chestnut. (Barry

Monday 25th February 2008 Beltinge
Night of 24/2 - mild at first with light rain, saw a
few moths in the trap, a Double-striped Pug was the first of the
year. Other bits were 2 March Moths, 4 Common Quaker, 1
Hebrew Character, 1 Pale Brindled Beauty, 1 Chestnut, 1
Emmelina monodactyla, 1 Epiphyas postvittana and 1
Agonopterix alstromeriana. (Barry H)
Sunday 24th February 2008 East Blean Wood
Night of 23/2. I found out late afternoon that 'we'
were baby-sitting that evening. I therefore decided that 'we' would be
baby-sitting at East Blean and did a two hour session. Not unpleasant but
just the usual suspects. 3 Yellow Horned, 48 March Moth, 2
Brindled Pug, 1 Dotted Border, 3 Spring Usher, 3 Pale
Brindled Beauty, 12 Small Brindled Beauty, 1 Red Chestnut,
5 Small Quaker, 4 Common Quaker, 1 Hebrew Character, 1
Grey Shoulder-knot, 1 Satellite, 7 Chestnut, c.200
Tortricodes alternella, 1 Acleris notana/ferrugana,
1 Ypsolopha ustella and 1 Diurnea fagella. (F

Night of 23/2 - a very mild night here and a few moths
in the trap, best was a Pale Pinion, also 1 Pale Brindled Beauty,
2 Common Quaker, 5 Hebrew Character and 2 Amblyptilia

Night of 22/2 - yet another new species for the year,
this time a pointy winged Dark Chestnut, other bits included 1
Common Quaker, 2 Hebrew Character and 1 Pale Brindled Beauty.

Friday 22nd
February 2008 Pegwell Trap
Night of 21/2. Moffing misery and
moaning (of which there will be lots) resumed at Pegwell. Off to a flyer
with a Small Brindled Beauty - a Thanet 'tick'. Other bits were an
Early Moth, Pale Brindled Beauty and Hebrew Character. Who
said Thanet was rubbish? Oh yes, that was me and it is. (F

Night of 21/2 - a milder
night the minimum temperature a balmy +9 resulted in four moths in the trap.
A March Moth was new for the year, 1 Hebrew Character, 1
Common Quaker and 1 Amblyptilia acanthadactyla(Barry H)

It certainly felt like the
milder conditions had begun to assert themselves as I cycled to the trap
site this morning. A single Dotted Border was the only moth taken.
The night before a single Hebrew Character was trapped. (Barry H)

Night of 18/2 - a much
warmer night, only got down to zero! Still there were two moths in the trap,
a new species for the year in the form of an Angle Shades and a
single Hebrew Character. (Barry H)

Night of 17/2 - a very cold night here, when I looked
at the thermometer at dawn it was -3. So I was somewhat surprised to find 3
moths in the trap, a Chestnut and 2 Hebrew Characters. Looks
like some milder conditions are on their way and that should start to see a
few more moths in general as we approach March. (Barry H)

Easterly drift finally arrived, not quite what the mother ordered but, the
trap held 4 Hebrew Characters which was four more moths than I

Night of 3/2 - after two
blank nights a single Early Moth was taken. The forecast of milder
conditions for the coming week, lead me to install the Robinson trap in the
garden, it is hoped that the better catch and hold ratio for this type of
trap will up the records for the site. Already I have visions of 500+ counts
of Large Yellow Underwings! (Barry H)
