Moth Nights 2012

Wednesday August 24th 2011 Saltwood

Night of the 23rdA single Bloxworth Snout to MV (Paul Howe)

Monday 22nd August 2011 Newington Ramsgate

There were lots of moths around the garden traps last night - well lots of micros anyway but as is usual in 2011 there wasn't too much of any note when I checked the contents this afternoon. Numbers were well up - 31 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwings being the most numerous but Orange Swift, Willow Beauty, Setaceous Hebrew Character, Square-spot Rustic, Common Wainscot and Vine's Rustics were all taken in double figures too. Of note were 1 Diamond Back, Cochylis atricapitana, 1 Pyrausta aurata, 4 Pyrausta despicata, 1 Bordered Pug, 1 Mathew's Wainscot and 2 Tree Lichen Beauties. (Phil M)

Sunday 21st August 2011 Saltwood night of 20th August

A much better night. Singles of Vestal, Dark Sword-grass and Convolvulus Hawkmoth. And a Lesser Spotted Pinion  (Paul Howe)

Sunday 14th August 2011 Pegwell Trap

Night of 13/8. A Dusky Hook-tip in the Pegwell trap otherwise absolutely awful - fewer moths than the previous night in seemingly better conditions. The best of the 'rest' were Restharrow, Epinotia ramella and Caloptilia semifascia. (F Solly)

Saturday 13th August 2011 Dumpton Thanet

It's been very poor in garden trap for some time, so this morning to find the Rest-Harrow in the trap was a surprise, (Gadget)

Saturday 13th August 2011 Newington Ramsgate

A few bits and pieces arrived overnight - singles of Cochylis mollilcilana, Ringed China Mark, Brown China Mark, Pale Prominent and Straw Underwing. (Phil M)

Saturday13th August 2011 Kingsgate Trap

Night of 12/8. With the exception of a Jersey Tiger at Kingsgate (new for the site) another very disappointing night in seemingly promising conditions - if nothing else just for general mothing. Numbers and variety were dreadful. (F Solly)

Friday 12th August 2011 Newington

A few moths arrived overnight - singles of Ethmia bipunctella, Aethes smeathmanniana, Small Fan-footed Wave, Maiden's Blush, Iron Prominent, Mathew's Wainscot, Straw Dot, Straw Underwing and Tree Lichen Beauty the best haul of reasonable quality stuff in ages. The entire summer has been absolutely awful around my garden - easily the worst since I started trapping here. I also caught a Greater Diving Beetle which was nice. I've taken hardly anything worth mentioning at all since the start of this month - one other Tree Lichen Beauty on the 5th, Rosy Minor on the 2nd, Langmaid's Yellow Underwing on the 1st and a Chocolate Tip on the 7th about it. (Phil M)

Thursday 11th August 2011 Pegwell & Kingsgate Traps

Eee by gum its grim! A totally uninspiring week for the scaled sprites. Night of 10/8. Marginally better than it has been although that is not saying much. Pick of the bunch were singles (of course) of Pebble Hook-tip, Maiden’s Blush, Pigmy Footman and Garden Tiger (now rather scarce on the grey concreted Isle)  (F Solly)

Thursday 4th August 2011 Pegwell Trap

Night of 3/8. Seemingly very good conditions but very poor. Much reduced numbers and variety from the previous night. Ethmia quadrillella at Pegwell was probably the ‘best’ of the catch – the remainder of minor local interest included: Eucosma metzneriana, Ancylosis oblitella, Annulet, Rosy Footman, Garden Dart and scraping the bottom of the barrel 21 Crescent Striped at Pegwell

Wednesday 3rd August 2011 Kingsdown & Thanet

It’s been hell! Not the absence of Planetthanet; moffing of late. Night of 2/8/11. Finally some decent weather. Considerably more moths than of late, better variety but given the conditions not particularly big numbers. With the chance of a migrant fest, I spent the night on Kingsdown beach along with running the usual Thanet traps. Hopes for migrants were quickly dashed though there were some interesting bits and pieces. The pick at Kingsdown was – Sussex Emerald, Hoary Footman, Jersey Tiger, Confused and Ethmia quadrillella. The pick on Thanet – Brussels Lace, Lunar Thorn, 10 Tree-lichen Beauty and Plumed Fan-foot. (F Solly)

Monday 1st August 2011 Dumpton Thanet

Not a great amount of moth around my garden of late, a Copper Underwing last night was the fist for this year and a Dark Sword-grass was the only migrant for sometime, (Gadget)
