31st August 2006 Newington Thanet
Lots of common moths overnight - normal August stuff of course. 'Bits'
included - 1 Blood Vein, 1 Large Thorn and 1 Scarce
Bordered Straw. (Phil M)

Night of Wednesday 30th August 2006 the
1st Convolvulus
Hawkmoth in the garden this year with 5 Old Lady's in the trap
which is a 1st for me normally they are on the outside of the trap, 1 Centre-barred
Sallow with plenty of the common species. (Gadget)
Thursday 31st August 2006 Westgate Thanet
Night of Wednesday 30th August 2006 Pretty ropey the last couple of nights. The
only half decent bits last night were a Dark Spinach, an Old
Lady, 3 Yellow-barred Brindles, 3 Light Emeralds, 1 Pearly
Underwing and 1 Dark Spectacle. Regrettably, numbers of Large
Yellow Underwings increased to 96. (Tim Hodge)
Thursday 31st August 2006 Dumpton garden
Night of Wednesday 30th August 2006. These
crazy conditions continue to frustrate. The 3rd garden Convolvulus
Hawk-moth was accompanied by an incredibly late, and extremely worn, Poplar
Hawk-moth. A Scarce Bordered Straw and a Straw Dot were
the best of the other migrants, but I did record my first Chinese
Character and Star-wort, of 2006, amidst the usual mix of
common species. (Dylan)
Thursday 31 August 2006 Westcliff Thanet
Night of 30/31 August. A few more moths last night
with somewhat warmer conditions. Best were two garden ticks in the forms
of a Red Underwing and a fresh Cosmopolitan.
Also, a Large Thorn and a Scarce Bordered Straw.

Wednesday 30th August 2006 Newington
Thanet
A
bit dull in the traps overnight - brightened up a bit by singles of Red
Underwing, Swallow Prominent and Agonopterix arenella.
Numbers of common stuff were still reasonable with 50 each of Vine's
Rustic and
Large Yellow Underwing. The first Feathered Ranunculus of
the year turned up as well. (Phil M)
Wednesday 30 August 2006 Westcliff Moth
Trap
Night of 29/30 August. Another cool night and little
change in the mix of regular moths in the trap. Migrants comprised just
three Silver Y, a Dark Sword-grass and a
Bordered Straw. Rosy Rustic
and Purple Bar provided some relief. (Dave B)
Tuesday 29 August 2006 Westcliff Moth Trap
& Old Hoverpad
Night of 28/29 August. Again, rather quiet with
mostly the same old stuff. However, I also recorded a Large Thorn,
as well as an Oak Nycteoline (every one seems to be in a
different plumage) and Dark Spinach. Numbers of migrants
are well down with just three Silver Y and a couple of Scarce
Bordered Straw. A trip to the hoverpad at Pegwell this morning
produced a Treble-bar and three Hummingbird
Hawk-moths. (Dave B)
Tuesday 29th August 2006 Newington Thanet
Not
much of any note in the traps overnight but I did get a Humming-bird
Hawk-moth flying around in the rain this afternoon - only the second
one I’ve ever seen in the garden. (Phil M)

The pick of the bunch last night was a very nice Large
Thorn, the first for my garden (come to think of it, most moths are
the first for my garden) (Tim Hodge)
Monday 28 August 2006 Westcliff Thanet
Night of 27/28 August. Pretty much the same stuff
last night but in smaller numbers. Different was a nice Vapourer
and three Purple Bar. Though not on Thanet I was well
pleased to finally catch up with a couple of fine Red Underwing at
the SBBOT family fun day...in the rain! (Dave B)
Monday 28th August 2006 Newington Thanet
Quite a lot of moths overnight - though numbers of
the more common species were slightly down on previous nights a few more
little 'bits' of quality showed up. (Though nothing to match Tim's Buttoned
Snout
unfortunately a reference to the moth not his hooter) Top moth was, worn Great
Brocade with back ups including 1 Yellow Belle, 2 Large
Thorn, 1 Pearly Underwing, 1 Old Lady and a Water
Veneer. (Phil M)
Monday 28th August 2006 Dumpton
garden
Night of Sunday 27th August 2006, Purely for the sanity of Francis,
migrants included my 2nd Convolvulus Hawk-moth, that sadly fell
victim to the marauding Hedgehogs, 3 Scarce & 1 Bordered Straw
and a nice male Gem. The only other record of any note was the
presence of 4 Old Lady's and a smart Yellow-barred Brindle on
the egg boxes as I surveyed the masses of regular culprits! (Dylan)
Monday 28th August 2006 Westgate Thanet
A
Buttoned Snout was the highlight last night, a few other bits
included 1 Diamond-backed, 1 Pearly Underwing, 1 Rush
Veneer, 1 Yellow Shell, 1 Dark Spinach, 2 Light
Emerald, 1 Dark Sword Grass, 82 Large Yellow Underwing,
1 Silver-Y and 2 Dark Spectacle. (Tim Hodge)
Sunday 27thAugust 2006 Kingsgate &
Pegwell Traps
Night of 26/8. Apart from a Convolvulus Hawk at Kingsgate and a Cosmopolitan
at Pegwell (my first since 1992!), the moth traps featured the usual
suspects in terms of resident and migrant species. (F Solly)
Sunday 27th August 2006 Westcliff Moth Trap
Night of 26/27 August. Another reasonably good night
though mostly just the regular species involved. Numbers of Large
Yellow Underwing are, regretably, increasing. Few migrants
involved a couple Scarce Bordered Straw, a Bordered
Straw, Dark Sword-grass and a few Rush
Veneer and Rusty-dot Pearls. A Hummingbird
Hawk-moth and a pair of Old Lady in the trap was
a nice bonus. A trip to the old hoverpad at Cliffsend produced more Hummingbird
Hawk-moths than of late with at least 12 present. (Dave B)
Sunday 27th August 2006 Newington Thanet
A few better than average moths overnight included - 2 Light Emerald,
1 Scarce Bordered Straw, 1 Bordered Straw, 1 Six-striped
Rustic, 1 Red Underwing and 1 Amblyptilia acanthadactyla.
Numbers were generally good but migrants were scarce - only 6 Rush
Veneer, 4 Rusty Dot and 4 Diamond Back's other than
those already mentioned. (Phil M)
Sunday 27th August 2006 Westgate Thanet
A few bits last night included 1 Old Lady, 1 Maple Prominent,
1 Bordered Straw, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw, 1 Dark
Spectacle, 1 Garden Pebble, 2 Rush Veneer, 1 Small
Dusty Wave, 2 Yellow-barred Brindle, 2 Latticed Heath, 3
Light Emerald, 1 The Lychnis, 1 Copper Underwing, 5 Pale
Mottled Willow, 1 Silver-Y. Numbers were provided by 74 Large
Yellow Underwing and 31 Vine’s Rustic. (Tim Hodge)
Saturday 26th
August 2006 Newington Thanet
A
half reasonable catch overnight topped by a rare migrant - a Cydia
amplana. My first garden record and a scarce moth in Thanet or
anywhere in Britain come to that. Unfortunately the darn thing flew before
I could
get any photos but no mistaking its identity - a very obvious little
Tortrix moth. Perhaps it will turn up tonight - it seemed to go into the
Cherry Tree at the end of the garden. Other goodies included 1 Satin
Wave, 1 Yellow Belle, 1 Maple Prominent, 1 Straw
Underwing, 1 Red Underwing, 1 Cream Bordered Green Pea and
1 Agdistis bonnetii. The migrants were: 3 Scarce Bordered
Straw, 3 Silver Y, 6 Rush Veneer, 3 Rusty Dot and
c6 Diamond Back's. (Phil M)
Saturday 26 August 2006 Westcliff Moth
Trap
Night of 25/26 August 2006. Calm and clear though a
bit chilly. Lots of moths though with 68 species logged, some in good
numbers. A few migrants with single Scarce Bordered Straw,
Pearly Underwing, Dark Sword-grass and Small
Mottled Willow and a few Rush Veneer and Rusty-dot
Pearl. Some nice additions to the yard list included a female Small
China-mark, Large Thorn, Purple-bar,
Dark Spinach and a surprisingly late Slender Pug.
A morning trip to the old hoverpad netted a brace of stunning Treble-bar
amongst the common Latticed Heath and Yellow
Shell. (Dave B)
Friday 25th August 2006 Newington Thanet
Nights of 23/08 and 24/08.Lots of moths in the traps mainly Vine's
Rustics, Setaceous Hebrew Characters, Yellow Underwings and Common
Wainscots. Overnight - 96 Vine's Rustics and 71 Large Yellow
Underwings (worst luck) plus 14 White-points good numbers for
the back garden. Little bits of quality have come in the shape of 2 Maiden's
Blush on 23rd, 1 Rest-harrow on 23rd, 1 Large Thorn on
23rd, Poplar Hawk-moth on 23rd, Chilo phragmitella on
23rd,Dioryctria abietella on 23rd and Agriphila
selasella on 24th.The only other noteworthy moth overnight and
that's stretching things a bit, was a Ypsolopha scabrella.
(Phil M)
Friday 25th August 2006 Westgate Thanet
Nights of 24/08 Nothing too striking here last night, a few bits
included 1 Scarce Bordered Straw, 2 Rush Veneer, 1 Blood-vein,
6 Latticed Heath, 79 Large Yellow Underwing, 5 White-point,
3 Angle Shades, 35 Vine’s Rustic, 1 Small Mottled
Willow and 2 Silver-Y. (Tim Hodge)
Friday 25th August 2006 Westcliff Moth
Trap
After such a grim and wet day it was with some relief
that the rain eased off by late evening. Another good catch of
common moths with climbing numbers of Vine's Rustic (60)
and large Yellow Underwing (21). Best
was a Barred Rivulet, which was new for the old back
yard. A few migrants included 4 Scarce Bordered Straw and
11 Rush Veneer. (Dave B)
Thursday 24 August 2006 Dumpton Thanet Trap
Night of 23rd August. Moths to note: 1 Vestal,
1 Bordered Straw, 2 Dark Sward Grass, 2 Copper Underwing,
1 Tree-lichen Beauty, 2 Silver Y, 5 Rush Veneers,1 Angel
Shades, 1 Old Lady and lots of common species. (Gadget)
Thursday 24 August 2006 Westcliff Moth
Trap
Night of 23rd August. Rather wet last night but
warmish, and, as usual, a good selection of common species. Few migrants
included a couple of Scarce Bordered Straw and singles of
Dark Swordgrass and Pearly
Underwing. New for my yard were single Toadflax Brocade
(possibly a migrant or a wanderer from Kingsdown) and Hedge Rustic.
Still getting the odd Hummingbird Hawk-moth whizzing
around. (Dave B)
Thursday 24 August 2006 Westgate Moth Trap
Night of 23/24 August. Quite a few moths in my trap in the rain this morning. New ones
for me were Orange Swift and Maple Prominent, whilst other
bits included 2 Dark Spectacle, 1 Diamond-backed, 2 Yellow-barred
Brindle, 1 Light Emerald, 66 Large Yellow Underwing, 31 Setaceous
Hebrew Character, 1 White-point, 2 Cypress Pug, 2 Copper
Underwing, 1 Mouse Moth, 4 Straw Underwing, 4 Angle
Shades, 26 Vine’s Rustic and 1 Silver-Y. I caught my
first Red Underwing yesterday, although it escaped before I could
photograph it. PS. forgot to mention that I caught on Old Lady
yesterday (Tim Hodge)
Wednesday 23 August 2006 Westcliff Moth
Trap
Night
of 22/23 August. Good numbers of the regular species with few migrants.
Best moths were an Old Lady, which fluttered up to the
light before beating a hasty retreat and a slightly worn Annulet.
The latter species had eluded us on several visits to the cliffs at dusk
and so was most welcome. Otherwise two Snouts were the
first for the garden. (Dave B)
Wednesday 23rd August 2006 Dumpton garden
Night of Tuesday 22nd August 2006 A few nice bits
amongst the regular garden species. A newly emerged Light Emerald
was my first of the 2nd generation this year. My second Gold Spot was
as immaculate as the first one - superb moths. Migrants were represented
by 13 Rush Veneer, 1 Bordered Straw and a rather tatty Convolvulus
Hawk-moth. They have been caught in my garden every year since Bev
& I moved here and I am sure that my deliberate planting of Nicotiana
has a positive attraction for this, and other migrant, species. (Dylan)
Wednesday 23rd August
2006 Newington Thanet
A
very disappointing catch overnight. Singles of Maiden's Blush and Scarce
Bordered Straw the only noteworthy things. Migrants included 7 Rush
Veneer, 2 Rusty Dot and c10 Diamond Back's. (Phil M)
Tuesday 22nd August 2006 Newington Thanet
Quite
a decent number of moths overnight. The more interesting stuff included 11
Latticed Heath, 1 Large Thorn, 2 Swallow Prominent, 1
Copper Underwing, 1 Straw Underwing and 1 Brown
China-mark. Numbers of a few species were half decent, with 21 Setaceous
Hebrew Character, 21 Large Yellow Underwing, 32 Lesser
Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, 71 Vine's Rustic and 25
Common Wainscot. Migrant numbers were 2 Diamond Back's, 2 Rusty
Dot, 3 Rush Veneer, 1 Silver Y, 1 Dark Sword-grass
and 2 Scarce Bordered Straw. (Phil M)
Tuesday 22nd August 2006 Broadstairs Thanet
Evening of 21/8. Walked along
the cliff-base south of Broadstairs at dusk. Lots of moths mostly junk
species such as Evergestis extimalis, Small Dusty and
Mullein Waves. Good numbers of the plume Agdistis bennetii
amongst the Rock Sea Lavender and of most note locally were 2 Annulets.
(F Solly)
Tuesday 22nd August 2006 Kingsgate &
Pegwell Traps
Night of 21/8. The usual dross resident moths in the
Pegwell and Kingsgate traps and small numbers of the usual migrants. The
only thing of any note was a worn Tree-lichen Beauty in the
Kingsgate trap. (F Solly)
Monday 21 August 2006 Westcliff Moth Trap
A rather quiet night for moth’s though reasonable
numbers of some of the more common species. Migrants appeared in the forms
of Pearly Underwing, Dark Swordgrass and
a couple of Bordered Straws. Nice was a fine Canary-shouldered
Thorn. Later in the afternoon a stroll along the seafront north
of Deal (not Thanet I know) netted a rather worn Oblique Striped and
a Rest Harrow amongst others. (Dave B)
Monday 21st August 2006 Westgate Thanet
Not that much in the trap last night, although I did
catch a Webb's Wainscot (photo attached), which Phil tells me is a
good garden moth. Also my first Yellow-barred Brindle, which is
rather attractive, plus 3 Rush Veneers and 3 White points.
(Tim Hodge)
Monday 21st August 2006 Newington Thanet
A
slightly smaller catch than the previous night – the highlights being: 1
Maiden's Blush, 2 Yellow-barred Brindle, 2 Water Veneer
and a Pyrausta despicata. (Phil M)

Sunday 20th August 2006 Kingsgate &
Pegwell Traps
Night of 19/8. Lots of moths once again at Kingsgate but just the
expected species, 6 Scarce Bordered Straws being the only thing of
any note. Broadly
similar at Pegwell, although a few slightly more interesting species - Green
Carpet, Dark Spinach, Southern Wainscot, Hedge Rustic and a very smart
Acleris cristana. (F Solly)
Sunday 20th August 2006 Newington Thanet
Good numbers of moth’s overnight but little of any
quality. Common stuff included 41 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 61 Lesser
Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing and 46 Vine's Rustic. Slightly
less common stuff included 2 Straw Dot, 2 Copper Underwing
and a Broad-barred White. Migrant wise 6 Silver Y, 2 Bordered
Straw, 3 Rusty Dot and 4 Diamond Back's. (Phil M)
Saturday 19th August 2006 Kingsgate &
Pegwell Traps
Night of 18/8. Kingsgate. Lots of moths in the trap although mostly the
usual suspects and dross such as Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow
Underwing, Setaceous Hebrew Characters and Vine's Rustics. The
highlight was a rather tatty Mocha - a new moth for Thanet and
presumably a migrant. Other migrants included 3 Small Mottled Willows,
3 Bordered Straws and 12 Scarce Bordered Straws. The
Pegwell trap had a similar mix, including 4 Small Mottled Willows,
3 Bordered and 8 Scarce Bordered Straws. (There was a Clay
Triple-lines at Pegwell on 17/8 - a notable moth for Thanet) (F Solly)
Saturday 19th August 2006 Newington Thanet
A very average sort of catch overnight though I did
get another Scarce Bordered Straw - though that's nothing to shout
about at the minute as there are loads of them about it would seem. Other
'bits' included 2 Tawny Speckled Pug, 1 Bordered Pug, 1 Currant
Pug, 5 Cypress Pug, 1 Purple Bar, 1 Swallow Prominent,
2 Straw Dot, 1 Evergestis Extimalis and a single Ringed
China-mark. (Phil M)
Friday 18 August 2006 Westcliff Moth Trap
Night of 17/18 Aug. A near perfect start to the night
soon gave way to heavy rain showers and lightning. Lots of moths last
night. Good numbers of common species: 61 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow
Underwings, 45 Vine's Rustic, and 10 White
Point etc. A scattering of migrants included 5 Scarce Bordered
Straw, 2 Bordered Straw and the odd Rush
veneer and Diamond-back Moth. (Dave B)
Friday 18th August 2006 Newington Thanet
Night of 17/08. Not exactly scintillating overnight
but I did get singles of Scarce Bordered Straw, Chinese Character, Small Mottled Willow, Lychnis, Wax Moth and
Pyrausta despicata. (Phil M)

My
first Scarce Bordered Straw, at last! (Tim Hodge)
Thursday 17th August 2006 Newington Thanet
Night of 16/08: A quietist night moth-wise with nothing much to get the
pulse racing as is normal I suppose.' Bits' included - 1 Tawny Speckled
Pug, 5 Cypress Pug, 1 Blood Vein, 1 Common White Wave,
54 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, 1 Least Yellow
Underwing, 1 Broad-barred White, 1 Cream-bordered Green Pea,
1 Ypsolopha scabrella and 1 Pyrausta despicata.
I did also get Phycitodes specie but I don't think they are
'do-able'...or are they?? (Phil M)
Wednesday 16th August 2006 Newington
Thanet
Night of 15/06.A cool damp night initially - though a
bit more cloud had rolled in by the time I got up at 05.30 - with a better
than expected catch though no great shakes. Singles of Red Underwing
and Sharp-angled
Peacock the only noteworthy 'bits' with migrants continuing to be
scanty with 1 Silver Y, 2 Rusty Dot, c6 Diamond Back
and a possible migrant White Point (a scabby looking thing) the
only things of that nature. (Phil M)
Wednesday 16th August 2006 Westcliff Moth
Trap Thanet
Night of 15/16 Aug. Rather quiet with mostly regular
species involved. A handful of migrants included a couple of Bordered
Straws, a Scarce Bordered Straw and two Dark
Swordgrass. There was some excitement over the identity of a
small Chortodes wainscot. It was very worn but I was sure it was going to
be a Small Wainscot. However, upon showing the moth to FS
he was unsure and thought it more likely to be a Mere Wainscot.
I remain unconvinced! Otherwise I trapped my first Evergestis
forficalis of the season. Late news from yesterdays catch was
an Oak Nyctioline.
(Dave B)
Tuesday 15th
August 2006 Westcliff
Moth Trap Thanet
A bit quieter than last night but still more than 50 species logged.
Few migrants but I did catch yet another Great Brocade.
Otherwise single Dark Swordgrass and Rusty-dot.
Amongst the resident species I trapped my first Small Square Spot,
Yellow-barred Brindle and Orange Swift
of the season. (Dave B)
Tuesday 15th August 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell
Traps
Night of 14/8. Another good haul of migrants at Kingsgate but only the
usual suspects. 3 Dark Sword-grass, 1 Pearly Underwing, 1
Great Brocade, 2 Small
Mottled Willows, 4 Scarce Bordered Straws, 2 Bordered Straws,
3 Ni and a few Rusty Dots and Rush Veneers. Most of
the 15 White-points were rather worn and may have involved at least
some migrants. More in the way of resident species than of late but
nothing better than another Crescent Striped. Pegwell again did not
live up to expectations with just 1 Scarce Bordered Straw. (F
Solly)
Tuesday 15th August 2006 Newington Thanet
Night of 14/08/06.Quite a bit better overnight with 2
rarities in the traps - a Great Brocade and a Langmaid's Yellow
Underwing. Other bits included: 3 Tawny Speckled Pug, 1 Currant
Pug, 7 Cypress Pug, 1
Yellow Belle, 1 Swallow Prominent, 2 White Point, 1 Bordered
Straw, 1 Euzophera pinguis etc. Numbers of commoner
stuff was up too with 29 Lesser Broad Bordered Yellow Underwing, 21
Common Rustic, 18
Setaceous Hebrew Character, 16 Vine's Rustic and so on and
so forth. Best of all only 1 Large Yellow Underwing. (Phil M)
Tuesday 15th August 2006 Dumpton garden
Night of Monday 14th August 2006 Another Great Brocade, this time
in superb condition, was again the pick of the migrants. 7 Pearly
Underwing, 5 Dark Swordgrass, 1 Bordered Straw, 4 Silver
Y and 16 Diamond Backs providing the back up interest. Of the
resident species, 2 Garden Tigers and a smart Campion
were nice to see, as was my first Rosy Rustic of the autumn.
(Dylan)
Monday
14th August 2006 Newington Thanet
Things picked up a little bit overnight at long last. The highlights were
1 Red Twin-spot Carpet, 5 Tawny Speckled Pugs, 1 Latticed
Heath, 1 Common Wave, 1 Clouded Border, 1 Bordered
Straw, 1 Straw Underwing, 1 Rusty Dot, 1 Lozotaeniodes
formosanus and a single Amblyptilia acanthadactyla.

Monday 14th August 2006 Westcliff Ramsgate
Thanet
Night of 13/14 August. Still a bit on the chilly side
but clear and sheltered where I am situated on the first floor balcony of
Westcliff Terrace Mansions. Some nice moths last night included a fine Peach
Blossom, which I didn't really expect. Migrants included a fresh Ni
Moth and my second Great Brocade of the season,
which was also in spanking condition. Otherwise a scattering of Diamond-back
Moths and Rusty-dots. Also nice was my first Light
Emerald of the season. Late
news from yesterday concerned a Pale Prominent and a
couple of Scarce Bordered Straws. (Dave

Monday 14th August 2006 Dumpton garden Thanet
Night of Sunday 13th August2006, A
couple of decent bits amongst the predictable species gathered on the egg
boxes this morning. A very worn Great Brocade being the pick of the
bunch, but I also had 1 Scarce Bordered Straw, 16 Silver Y,
2 Pearly Underwing and a few "xylostella"
(Diamond Backs). Strangely, I also had another 2 examples of the plume
moth Amblyptilia acanthadactyla - is this the start of a
range expansion or is it just that I haven't been looking? (Dylan)
Friday
11th August 2006 Newington Thanet
Night of 10th. Very little once again on the common moth front but there
was another Southern Wainscot my second one of the year and a
scarce moth in Thanet. Other bits included the Pyralid Ancylosis
oblitella and a single Rusty Dot. (Phil M)
Thursday 10th
August 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps
Night of 9/8. Strong NW wind overnight and cool meant that there was
very little in the Kingsgate trap. A Crescent Striped was the best
of the resident species and the few migrants being 4 Scarce Bordered
Straw, 1 Bordered Straw, 1 Dark Sword-grass, 3 Rusty
Dot and 1 Rush Veneer. The only thing of note at Pegwell was
the first Six-striped Rustic of the year. (F Solly)
Thursday
10th August 2006 Newington Thanet
It's been cack! Officially awful for the time of year.25 Species of macro
and a few micros made it into the traps but as with the rest of this week
numbers have been low and the general overall quality has been poor
especially as I'm well away from most of the migrant action. Overnight the
best moths were a Nephopterix Angustea (a Pyralid) and a Pebble
Prominent. Otherwise just everyday sorts of stuff. This past few
nights have turned up: Ypsolopha scabrella and 2 Euzophera
pinguis on 6th, 1 Pyrausta despicata, 2 Maiden's
Blush and a Summer Fruit Tortrix on 7th plus singles of Brown
China Mark, Pale Prominent and Straw Underwing on the
8th.Migrants have been mainly 1- 3's of Silver Y's, Rush Veneer's
and Diamond Back's. (Phil M)
Wednesday 9th August 2006 Dumpton garden Thanet
Night of Tuesday 8th August 2006 A few migrants appeared in the trap
overnight. 2 Scarce & 7 Bordered Straw, 11 Evergestis
extimalis, 3 Dark Swordgrass, 1 Small Mottled Willow
and whilst a single White Point may have been of local origin, my
1st Garden Tiger of 2006 was the best looking moth in the trap. As
Francis stated, they are becoming increasingly scarce locally. The
most unusual moth was an example of the plume moth Amblyptilia
acanthadactyla; obviously quite striking because I bothered to pot
it up instead of ignoring it! (Dylan)
Wednesday 9th August 2006 Kingsgate
& Pegwell Traps
Night of 8/8. Very poor for resident species but lots of migrants in
the Kingsgate trap. 1 Gem, 1 Striped Hawk, 4 Dark
Sword-grass, 1 Pearly Underwing, 1 Great Brocade, 3 Small
Mottled Willow, 9 Scarce Bordered Straw (a site record), 3 Bordered
Straw, 2 Ni, 5 Rusty Dot and 3 Rush Veneer. Off
to the Pegwell trap with high expectations only to be disappointed with
just 1 Scarce Bordered Straw (Dave tells me that side was rather
blown out last night). (F Solly)

Night of Saturday 5th August 2006 Halleluiah, I'm a believer brother! At long last some moths to get
excited over. The 125w Milton Mk VII is in need of a little TLC, so the
250w Robinson-type has been dusted down a pressed into service. I'm sure
that the presence of 5 mature Buddleia bushes and extensive tubs of
Nicotiana have also played a part. Last night I recorded 1 Scarce
Silver Y (a garden tick and a lifer!), 2 Great Brocade (my
first since the influx year of 1996), 2 Bordered Straw and a nice
mix of Diamond Backs, Rush Veneers, 1 Small Mottled Willow and
a few Dark Sword-grass. A couple of other nice garden records
involved my first Gold Spot and Olive of 2006. I'm almost interested again!

Saturday 5th August 2006 Kingsgate, Pegwell
& W/C Terrace
Night of 4/8. The northerly breeze continues to affect Kingsgate -
very few moths and nothing of interest. A few more moths in the Pegwell
trap but nothing better than 4 Dark Sword grass and a Maiden's
Blush. (Dave B), in his trap about 1/4 mile east of
my Pegwell site had a Great Brocade and 3 immaculate Scarce
Silver Y's. (I managed to lose one during a photo session Dave
wouldn't let me 'lose' the remaining 2 until Phil had seen them
unfortunately) (F Solly & Dave B)
Friday 4th August 2006 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps
Night
of 3/8. Windy N-NW, Kingsgate Trap blown out and very few moths in the
Pegwell Trap - the only thing of note being a nice Hummingbird
Hawk-moth. (F Solly)
Thursday 3rd August 2006 Kingsgate &
Pegwell Traps
Night
of 2/8/2006. North-westerly and showery overnight, poor conditions for
Thanet and in particular the Kingsgate trap. Very little in any of the
traps although a Great Brocade at Pegwell was a surprise. One Dark
Swordgrass, 12 Silver Y and 8 Diamond Backs were the
only other migrants - 4 White-points probably being of local
origin.
The
first Yellow Belle of the 2nd generation and a Garden Tiger
(now rather scarce over much of Thanet) were the only other things of
note. (F Solly)
Wednesday
2nd August 2006 Garden Newington Thanet
A very poor catch overnight given the conditions just about as bad as it
can get at the time of year? Only 23 species of macro moth made it into
the 2
garden traps with only 2 species in double figures Shuttle-shaped Dart
and Common Rustic (22 and 23 moths respectively), which is
incredibly bad. A few half reasonable moths were taken, best of the bunch
a Rosy Minor (less than half a dozen garden records) though they
are quite common down the road at Pegwell. My good run of Pyralids
continued with singles of Donacaula Forficella and Chilo
Phragmitella - moths normally scarce in my back yard. Other bits
included Small Waved Umber, Dog's Tooth and Cream-bordered
Green Pea. (Phil M)
Wednesday 2nd August 2006 Garden Westgate
Thanet
Not many moths in my trap last night, but they did include two Bordered
Straws, a White-point, an Oak Hook-tip (yesterday’s
moth reappearing, I think), a Pyrausta purpuralis and a Scalloped
Oak. (Tim Hodge)
Tuesday
1st August 2006 Garden Newington Thanet
Another extremely poor catch numbers wise though there were the odd half
reasonable moth for the garden. My second Phtheochroa inopiana
in 2 days (a different moth as the other one is still in the fridge - not
unless its a Houdini inopiana?) plus a recapture no doubt of
yesterday nights Pempelia genistella which escaped when I
tried to photograph it while it was still on the egg box. It 'did me for
pace' in the stiff s/westerly as I chased it down the garden with my net
looking like a right walley! Otherwise 3 Bordered
Pugs, a Small Fan-footed Wave, 3 Lesser Common Rustic, 1
Twin-spotted Wainscot and a Straw Dot. The migrants were: 1 Small
Mottled Willow, 1 Dark Sword Grass, 8 Silver Y's, 1 Rush
Veneer and about 10 Diamond Backs. (Phil M)
Tuesday 1st August 2006 Garden Westgate Thanet
Some bits this morning included Oak Hook-tip
(photo attached), Bordered Straw and Cypress Pug.
Unfortunately I'm building up quite a few photographs of moths I haven't
yet identified! (Tim Hodge)
