Some good catches over the last weekend to match the mini heat wave, So far the season seems about a week earlier than average, with highlights of Puss Moth, Chocolate-tip, Dark/Grey Dagger and Scorched Carpet in the trap on 23rd. and Silver Y, Knot Grass, Pebble Prominent and a Cinnabar on 24th. Also a surprise up here in the foothills, a migrant Reed Dagger dropped in on Easter Sunday morning! Back to normal now though  with these cold northerlies, (Bill Martin)

Tuesday 26th April 2011  Saltwood

Another very disappointing night, 6 moths of 4 species, with Pebble Prominent new (Paul Howe)

Monday 25th April 2011  Saltwood

A very quiet night, but a Flame Carpet was new for the year. (Paul Howe)

Monday 25th April 2011 Newington  Ramsgate

The moth trapping hasn't exactly been setting the world alight in my garden this past week except for the exceptional amount of Brindled Pugs that have been showing - I took another 6 on the night of the 22nd and 1 - 3 on a few other nights as well. Overnight is was semi-cack but I did at least get a nice Toadflax Brocade  little else mind you. Other 'bits' recently have included Esperia sulpherella, Amblyptilia acanthadactyla, Eudonia angustea and a new moth for the garden (I think?) in the shape of the Tortrix Grapholita funebra on the night of the 23rd. The only other news was that also on the 23rd I caught 2 Diamond-backed Moths and a Silver Y. (Phil M)

Sunday April 24th Saltwood

6 new macros overnight. Dark/Grey Dagger, Common Carpet, Garden Carpet, Maiden's Blush, May Highflyer and Fern. (Paul Howe)

Friday April 22nd Saltwood

Three new overnight, Callisto denticulella, Agonopterix purperea, two Least Black Arches, and a single Turnip Moth,(Paul Howe)

Friday 22nd April, 2011 Adjacent to King George VI Park Broadstairs

Thursday 22nd April 2011 Saltwood

Only 1 new overnight, Poplar Grey, (Paul Howe)

Wednesday 20th April 2011 Newington  Ramsgate

On checking the traps at silly o'clock this morning I was surprised to find two Brindled Pugs sitting outside the traps ... then three, then four ... then five! Believe me five Brindled Pugs is a shocking amount for here ... silly, really silly. Anyway - this afternoon when I emptied the traps I came across: 1 Mompha (can't remember surname ... hee hee), 1 Caloptilia syringella, 1 Amblyptilia acanthadactyla, 1 Eudonia angustea, 1 V Pug, 1 Double-striped Pug, 1 Brimstone, 3 Muslin Moths, 1 Ruby Tiger, 1 Herald and a handful of the other nightly noctuid stuff. I even have a Pug which I'm not sure what it is as yet - it may well be the melanic form of Brindled Pug? I will investigate later as I can't be bothered as I write and if all else fails I will get onto Herr Hairy so as to pick the moth brain of Britain. Over n' out. (Phil M)

Wednesday 20th April 2011 Kingsgate & Pegwell Traps

Night of 19/4. An unprecedented (for Thanet) influx of Brindled Pugs last night with 7 at Kingsgate and 10 at Pegwell. Other bits and pieces between the traps included; Grey Pine Carpet, 3 Oak-tree Pugs, Seraphim, Brimstone, Waved Umber, Engrailed, Muslin, 8 Least Black Arches, 2 Dark Sword-grass, Lead-coloured Drab, Chamomile Shark and Herald. A little variation at last this morning, with first singles of the year of Small Waved Umber, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Brimstone Moth and Least Black Arches. Another Nut-tree Tussock and 2 Streamer were also nice to see, with 2 Double-striped Pug and the usual Orthosia, total of 24 moths of 11 species, (Bill Martin)

Tuesday 19th April 2011 Saltwood

20 species overnight of 18/4. 6 new, singles of Brimstone, Mullein, Bee Moth, Brown House Moth, Eriocrania subpurpurella, two Lesser Swallow Prominent, and in the front garden Pyrausta aurata. (Paul Howe)

Monday 18th April 2011 Saltwood

A quiet night, just the one new, a solitary Swallow Prominent. (Paul Howe)

Sunday 18th April 2011 Saltwood

39 moths of 17 species overnight. With the winter moths dwindling it looks like new players are taking the stage. 5 new last night, singles of Small Phoenix, Oak-tree Pug, V-Pug, Purple Thorn and Waved Umber. Also of note were Brindled Beauty and Engrailed. (Paul Howe)

Friday 15th April 2011 Saltwood

Two new, singles of Dark Sword-grass and Muslin Moth (Paul Howe)

Friday 15th April 2011 Newington  Ramsgate

Amongst the usual common stuff overnight I found 1 Chinese Character, 1 Least Black Arches and another Brindled Pug ... which is odd for here. There was also a Shuttle-shaped Dart  too - the first of 2011 but not the last. Tatty bye to one and all,  (Phil M)

Wednesday 13th April  2011 Adjacent to King George VI Park Ramsgate

Friday 8th April 2011 Adjacent to King George VI Park

A reasonable number of moths, but only 4 species Hebrew Character, Common Quaker, Clouded Drab and Early Grey. (Sue Smith)

Friday 8th April 2011 East Blean Wood

Night of 7/4. A 2½ hr session in East Blean to break the monotony of early spring moffing on Thanet. Thursday 7th April 2011 Newington  Ramsgate

Not vast numbers overnight as you'd expect but the catch did include 3 Small Quakers which is very good for here and a garden scarcity in the shape of a Brindled Pug. I swap them all for a nice Twin-spotted Quaker in fact I'd swap every moth I've caught all year for a Twin-spotted Quaker ... it's becoming an obsession with me. Anyway ... rant over. The rest of the catch included singles of Agonopterix alstromeriana plus another Agonopterix species that I haven't as yet looked at properly (I assume it'll be herecliana?) also 3 Double-striped Pugs, 1 Early Thorn, 9 Common Quakers, 5 Hebrew Characters, 3 Clouded Drabs and 1 Early Grey. (Phil M)

Thursday 7th April 2011 Saltwood

84 moths of 14 species included another Blossom Underwing and two new, 4 Twenty Plume Moths and two Brindled Pug. (Paul Howe)

Wednesday 6th April 2011 Saltwood

Wednesday 6th April 2011 Saltwood

32 moths of 7 species, of interest, Pine Beauty, and a new one, Early Thorn.   (Paul Howe)

Tuesday 5th April 2011 Newington  Ramsgate

A slightly larger catch overnight but apart from 2 Small Quakers nothing out of the ordinary for here. The catch was 3 Agonopterix alstromeriana, 12 Common Quakers, 5 Hebrew Characters, 4 Early Grey and 1 Pale Mottled Willow. (Phil M)

Monday 4th April 2011 Saltwood

41 moths of 12 species. Pick of the bunch were another Peppered Moth, Brindled Beauty and the first Shuttle-shaped Dart of the year, (Paul Howe)

Monday 4th April 2011 Newington  Ramsgate

Another small catch overnight, 1 Diurnea fagella, 3 Double-striped Pugs, 1 Small Quaker, 7 Common Quakers, 4 Hebrew Characters, 3 Early Greys and a Pale Mottled Willow. (Phil M)

Sunday 3rd April 2011 Newington  Ramsgate

Amongst the common wear and tear in the traps today was a rarity ... a Blossom Underwing, which was to say the least, most unexpected. I also took 2 more Diurnea fagella which is most odd for here? The common stuff were singles of Early Thorn, Double-striped Pug, Early Grey, 3 Hebrew Characters and 6 Common Quakers. (Phil M)

Sunday April 3rd 2011 Saltwood

Amongst the 53 moths of 13 species overnight were 3 new. Singles of Zelleria heperiella, Blossom Underwing, and a Peppered moth of the typical form. My earliest record ever. (Paul Howe)

Saturday April 2nd 2011 Saltwood

Just 31 moths of 9 species overnight included one new, a single Caloptilia stigmatella. (Paul Howe)

Sunday 3rd April 2011 Eastry

Much better flight conditions for this mornings long haul, after the Friday night blow-out. Mostly Hebrew Character, Common Quaker, and Small Quaker in the total of 45 moths, but the first Herald of the season, another March Moth, 3 Twin-spotted Quaker, 3 Clouded Drab, an Early Grey, and another Diurnea fagella. We're cruising now. (Bill Martin)
