Moth Nights 2009

Tuesday 28th April 2009 Eastry

Scarce rewards continue with a series of cold clear nights, Night of 25th. among total of seventeen moths, singles of note included Bright-line Brown-eye, The Spectacle, Muslin, Lesser Swallow Prominent and Coxcomb Prominent This morning a scary total of six included a pristine Chocolate Tip (Bill Martin)

Tuesday 28th April 2009 Sandwich Bay & Pegwell Bay

26/4/2009, Sunny clear and calm, unlikely to be anything on the Thanet wastelands in such conditions so I spent the morning at Sandwich Bay; where I also wasn't expecting anything and wasn't disappointed. As the dew dried, the odd micro moff flitted about in the morning sun. The Whitehouse area produced Grapholita jungiella, Grapholita compositella, Elachista argentella, Elachista rufocinerea, Elachista atricomella, Esperia sulphurella and Incurvaria masculella. Some Gorse beating at Mary Bax predictably produced Cydia ulicetana and of more interest a number of Grapholita internana - if my info is still up to date, only the 2nd site currently known in Kent for this attractive Tortrix. A late afternoon visit to Pegwell produced an abundance of the tiny tortrix Gynnidomorpha vectisana in the Saltmarsh along with two larval 'nests' of Ground Lackey and a couple of the plume Adaina microdactyla in Stonelees along with more Grapholita jungiella   (F Solly)

Saturday 25th April 2009 Newington Thanet

Very little in the traps overnight though I did manage a garden tick - a nice Streamer - a fairly common moth but it's taken me over ten years to get one here in concrete land. Amongst a handful of normal spring moths I did also pick up one each of Swallow Prominent and Bright-line Brown Eye which are both new moths for 2009. (Phil M)

Saturday 25th April 2009 Dumpton Thanet

Night of the 24th April 2009, Numbers still being on the low-side in the garden at present, but managed two new species for this year, 1 Toadflax Brocade and 1 Red-green Carpet. (Gadget)

Friday 24th April 2009 Eastry

Night of Weds. 22nd produced grand total of twenty moths with singles of Lesser Swallow Prominent, Flame Shoulder and The Spectacle, Night of Thurs. 23rd. singles of Shuttle-shaped Dart, Flame Shoulder and Pine Beauty, among a meagre fourteen in total. (Bill Martin)

Thursday 23rd April 2009 Newington Thanet

Another poor catch was brightened up by yet another moth that Franny won't get in his rubbishy garden this year, the moth? It wasn't a rarity - just a Chamomile Shark but I just enjoy rubbing his nose in it. Naff all else worth mentioning here. (Phil M)

Thursday 23rd April 2009 Dumpton Thanet

Three new moths for the garden this year consisting off Muslin Moth, Pepper Moth and Swallow Prominent that was the best of the rest, (Gadget)

Wednesday 22nd April 2009 Newington Thanet

Tuesday 21st April 2009 Newington Thanet

A surprising amount of moths overnight considering that only two nights prior I only caught one macro moth using two traps! Although they were all very common stuff it was quiet a shock to find 18 macros plus a few micros! I did get 2 Angle Shades which are the first one's I've taken this year plus a Pyrausta aurata and an Agonopterix arenella which might sound dull but after these past few nights it's pretty awesome! (Phil M)

Monday 20th April 2009 Eastry

Among the Hebrew Characters this morning, singles of Early Thorn, Small Waved Umber, and my first Shuttle-shaped Dart, Twenty in the trap.        (Bill Martin)

Thursday 16th April 2009 Eastry

My two grandchildren, four and eight going on teenagers, helped me with the trap this morning, three rookies together, with much expectation after the storm last night, two each of Early Thorn, Shoulder Stripe and a Streamer. Singles of Engrailed, Double-striped Pug, Small Waved Umber, Swallow Prominent, Nut-tree Tussock and Brimstone Moth 46 in total, great fun had by all! (Bill Martin)

Moths overnight included 1 Brown House Moth, 7 Double-striped Pug, 1 Early Thorn, 1 Muslin Moth, 1 Pine Beauty, 12 Common Quaker, 1 Early Grey, 3 Hebrew Character and another Blossom Underwing. The Pine Beauty was only my third ever record here - the Underwing my second record after one during the week. (Phil M)

A warm still night brought out the moths in some numbers, although nothing unexpected, with a total of 35 moths of 12 species. Friday 10th April 2009 Cliffsend Thanet

This Chocolate-tip was a lovely surprise in my trap last night. (Claire W)

Friday 10th April 2009 Pegwell Bay and Newington Thanet

There was a nice male Emperor Moth flying about on the country park this morning. My garden traps were not exactly bulging but at least I'm doing better than old hairy bonce around the corner whose garden is so bad that he 'claims' he hasn't even switched his traps on as yet? Yeah okay ... I believe you. He's already making lame excuses knowing, as do we all that he's in for another gigantic thumping! Anyway ... where was I? Oh yes - my wonderful garden traps contained 1 Early Thorn, 14 Common Quaker, 6 Hebrew Character, 1 Clouded Drab, 3 Early Grey and 1 Dark Chestnut. Watch and learn Solly - watch and learn. (Phil M) (Triumphant)

Thursday 9th April 2009 Cliffsend Thanet

As well as a few of the usual moths I had 8 Early Greys, 1 Double- striped Pug & a Shoulder Stripe. (Claire W)

Thursday 9th April 2009 Pegwell Trap

Night of 8/4. A Blossom Underwing (a far nicer specimen than the grotty Newington moth) and Caloptilia semifascia were the only things of note amongst the slight increase in numbers at the Pegwell trap. (F Solly)

Thursday 9th April 2009 Eastry

Only eighteen in the box last night under a full moon, Hebrew Character, Early Grey, Common Quaker, Clouded Drab, and singles of Emmelina Monodactyla, Early Thorn, and Pale Pinion. (Bill Martin)

Thursday 9th April 2009 Newington Thanet

Quite a few more moths in the traps overnight - only common stuff but at least there were more than the usual 3 - 6 moths that I've been getting of late. A handful of boring micros were flitting about as well as 3 Early Thorn, 1 Double-striped Pug, 13 Common Quaker, 1 Clouded Drab, 6 Hebrew Character and 3 Early Grey. (Phil M)

Thursday 9th April 2009 Westgate Thanet

Wednesday 8th April 2009 Newington Thanet

A handful of moths in the traps overnight included 1 Amblyptilia acanthadactyla, Agonopterix subpropinquella, 2 Early Thorn, 2 Hebrew Character, 1 Early Grey, 4 Common Quaker, 1 Clouded Drab and a Blossom Underwing. The Underwing is a scarce moth on Thanet, so if anyone wants to tick it off then give me a ring - I will keep it until tomorrow if anyone's interested? (Phil M)

Tuesday 7th April 2009 Eastry

Encouraging numbers last night, with more Early Grey, less Hebrew Character and Clouded Drab, the best of the rest were several Small Quaker with one Twin Spot Quaker, a couple of Early Thorn, a Pine Beauty and a stunning Streamer, (Bill Martin) Photos will be posted

Tuesday 7th April 2009 Newington Thanet

Still quiet in the garden though a few woodland type species showed up overnight with singles of Diurnea fagella, Engrailed and Small Quaker causing a stir in this dullest of spring moth areas, otherwise 2 species of Agonopterix (1 is an alstromeriana) and 2 each of Hebrew Character and Common Quaker. (Phil M)

Tuesday 7th April 2009 Westgate Thanet

A few moths at last night with singles of Caloptilia rufipennella, Agonopterix subpropinquella and 1 Clouded Drab, 2 Small Quakers (ahem, new for the garden) 2 Double-striped Pugs, 2 Early Greys and 3 Hebrew Characters. (Tim H)

Tuesday 7th April 2009 East Blean wood

Night of 6/4. Mild but mostly clear with a big moon. An extremely poor 2 hours in East Blean with Gadget and Tim. Excellent company, subjects many and varied discussed blah, blah, blah, whilst waiting for something interesting to appear - it was a long and unrewarding wait. The meagre showing was; 1 Water Carpet, 4 Brindled Pugs, 2 Early Tooth-striped, 6 Early Thorn, 1 Oak Beauty, 8 Engrailed, 1 Common Quaker, 1 Small Quaker, 4 Chestnut, 40 Diurnea fagella, 1 Acleris notana/ferrugana and 1 Eriocrania subpurpurella (F Solly)

Sunday 5th April 2009 Beltinge

Night 4/4 - a touch better last night with 1 Oak Beauty and 1 Clouded Drab amongst the usual suspects. The last few nights have just seen the regulars and in pretty low numbers too. Some more variety is needed please!    (Barry Hunt)

Saturday 4th April 2009 Newington Thanet

A slightly better night for moths overnight though still quite slow as you'd expect given the weather of late, There were 4 Common Quakers,3 Hebrew Characters and a Clouded Drab which is about as good as it's been here this spring numbers wise. (Phil M)

Saturday 4th April 2009 Eastry

The usual mix of Hebrew Characters and Common Quakers at Eastry, including one Small Quaker with a couple of Early Greys, to complement the Oak Beauty found outside the trap on 29th, March, today a pristine Purple Thorn near the trap, spectacular! (Bill Martin)

Wednesday 1st April 2009 Dumpton Thanet

A mega night in the garden last night (seven) moth in total 4 Common Quakers, 2 Hebrew Characters, and 1 Early Grey lookout Barry I'm catching up slowly, (Gadget)

Tuesday 31st March 2009 Beltinge

Night 30/3 - a 50 plus moth night, but apart from a Double-striped Pug and a couple of Clouded Drab it was all the usual moths, (Barry Hunt)
