Belting
Night 28/4 - a clear and
cooler night here last night was not ideal but still 41 moths made it to the
trap. New for the year were 2 Muslin Moth. The best of the rest were
1 Shoulder Stripe, 1 Cabbage and 3 Powdered Quaker. The
numbers made up by Early Grey, Angle Shades, Clouded Drab, Common Quaker,
Shuttle-shaped Dart and Hebrew Character. (Barry H)
Monday 28th
April 2008 East Blean Wood
Night of 27/4. A very disappointing
2 1/4 hours of moffing at East Blean in what appeared to be reasonable
conditions. The less than inspiring catch was - 1 Maiden's Blush, 15
Brindled Pug, 1 Double-striped Pug, 1 Early Tooth-striped,
1 Purple Thorn, 8-10 Lunar Marbled Brown, 1 Marbled Brown,
2 Least Black Arches, 2 Common Quaker, 1 Chestnut and 5
Nut-tree Tussock. The only micros were Eriocrania subpurpurella
(lots) and a few Incurvaria masculella. (Frances, Barry, Tim
and Gadget also endured the misery)
Monday 28th April 2008 Pegwell Trap
Night of 27/4/08 slightly better variety amongst the Pegwell dross, with
Chinese Character, Red-green Carpet and Spruce Carpet putting
in an appearance.

Beltinge
Night 27/4 - stunned into
amazement as 2 Diamond-back Moth were in the trap. As for the
resident macros 15 species occurred of which five were new for the year and
they were 1 Chamomile Shark, 1 Twin-spotted Quaker, 1
White-spotted Pug, 1 Flame Shoulder and 1 Red Twin-spot Carpet.
The rest made up of 1 Streamer, 1 Powdered Quaker, 1
Cabbage, 3 Shuttle-shaped Dart and the usual Quakers and
Early Grey, a few micros but again nothing new just the run of the
mill species. (Barry H)
Sunday 27th April 2008 Westgate Thanet
The best thing last night was a rather attractive
tortrix, Acleris hastiana, which was new for me although it
escaped before I could photograph it, a total of 10 species, not good but
heading in the right direction, including a Cabbage, Lime Speck Pug
and Brimstone, whilst Light Brown Apple Moths made it into
double figures. (Tim H)
Sunday 27th April 2008 Beltinge
Night 26/4 - again a slight improvement overnight with
15 species of macros adding up to 83 moths in total. New for the year were 2
Streamer, Cabbage and a Herald, the rest of the total made up
of the regular moths. Micro highlights were 3 Eudonia angustea,
new for the year and a handful of the same species from the previous nights.

Saturday 16th April
2008 Westgate Thanet
Moths galore here in
downtown Westgate, Highlight was my first micro of the year (if you don't
count the other two) and a new one for the garden - Tinea trinotella.
I also caught a couple of Caloptilias which I'm pretty sure
are rufipenellas. Macros were Bright-line Brown Eye, 4
Common Quakers and something else common, but I've forgotten it
already. (Tim H)
Saturday 16th April

Pegwell Bay
2 sightings of male

garden traps - even worse that Slim!! (Phil M)
Friday 25th April 2008 Dumpton garden
14 moths in the trap, just 4 species! 1 each of
Hebrew Character, Common Quaker and Flame Shoulder plus 11
Early Grey - well worth the electric bill - NOT! (Dylan)
Thursday 24th April 2006 Westgate Thanet
Moths in Westgate - impossible I hear you say. But no,
I was overwhelmed with 4 Common Quakers, 1 Hebrew Character, 1
Double-striped Pug, 2 Endrosis sarcitrella and 1
Emmelina monodactyla. Is that good, or what?(Tim H)
Thursday 24th April
2008 Pegwell trap
Night of 23/4. Couldn't be bothered to do the Pegwell trap until
lunchtime, once there however I was almost overwhelmed - no less than eight
species - it was a shame that I didn't get a video grab of the spectacle.
Least Black Arches and Chamomile Shark were the first of the
year, other than that the usual suspects - Shuttle-shaped Dart, Common
Quaker, Hebrew Character, Clouded Drab, Early Grey and Esperia
sulphurella. (F Solly)
Thursday 24th April
2008 Beltinge
Night of 23/4 - a slight
improvement overnight with 20 moths in the trap, they were 1 Powdered
Quaker, 1 Double- striped Pug, 1 Agonopterix alstromeriana,
4 Hebrew Character and 12 Early Grey, also an
Agonopterix species that was to worn for an accurate identification.

Thursday 24th April 2008 Pegwell Area
22/4. The north-easterly wind finally dropped, so I decided to do some
netting/beating during the evening sunshine in the Pegwell area. Most of the
moths were micros (oh no!) so you will be really bored. Stonelees produced
Common and Red twin-spot Carpets, a few Grapholita jungiella,
Agonopterix alstroemeriana and an Elachista canapennella.
Across the road produced a number of Cydia succedana amongst
the Gorse, Elachista rufocinerea, Parornix anglicella and
Phyllocnistis unipunctella (F Solly)
Wednesday 23rd April
2008 Beltinge
Night of 22/4 - lost the
easterly only to be replaced by a clear, cool and damp night. Not a lot in
the trap 2 Early Thorn, 2 Hebrew Character and 7 Early Grey.

Monday 21st April 2008
Newington Thanet
It's still awful for moths
of course but I did catch a Powdered Quaker in the garden last night
- they are quite a rarity in the area, it being only my second ever record.
Very little else - a few Hebrew Characters, Common Quakers and the
first Brimstone Moth of the New Year, That's it folks! (Phil M)
Monday 21st April 2008
Beltinge
Night of 20/4 - the lovely easterly wind continues and
as is usual here, destroys the fact that it was a mild night. Only three
moths made the trap and they were 1 Angle Shades, 1 Early Grey
and 1 Double-striped Pug, (Barry H)
Monday 21st April 2008
Dumpton Thanet
Night of 20th April 2008 this being the
first night for over two weeks that there were more than two moths in the
trap, with 2 Early Grey, 1 Angle Shade, 1 Hebrew Character
and 2 Emmelina monodactyla a total of six moths this being
only the second time this year and how exciting is that. (Gadget)

moths made it into the trap last night and they were 1 Hebrew Character,
2 Clouded Drab, 3 Early Grey and 2 Emmelina monodactyla.
This tedium surely cannot last much longer. (Barry H)
Friday 18th April 2008 Beltinge
Night of 17/4 - just an Early Grey last night
and the night before was again stunning with five moths, Clouded Drab,
Early Grey and 3 Hebrew Character, I don't want to raise false
hopes but from the middle of next week my weather website is forecasting the
arrival of Spring! (Barry H)
Wednesday 16th April 2008 Beltinge
Night of 15/4 - a handful of moths in the trap last
night which were 1 Powdered Quaker, 1 Emmelina monodactyla, 1

migrant Silver Y last night in the trap, the excitement lasted for
barely a second but at least its a start. Other moths included singles of
the following Small Quaker, Satellite, Angle Shades and
Double-striped Pug with 5 Early Grey and 6 Hebrew Character
making up the rest. (Barry H)
Friday 11th April 2008 Pegwell & Stonelees
A brief wander around the Pegwell area in evening sunshine to see if
anything was flying around. A couple of male Emperor Moths flying
over the tip (sorry, I mean Country Park of course) and a couple of
Elachista rufocinerea. In Stonelees, a single of the Tortrix
Grapholita jungiella - you will just have to imagine just how nice
that was as I failed to catch it. (F Solly)
Thursday 10th April 2008 Beltinge
Night of 9/4 - a few bits last night, which were 1
Clouded Drab, 2 Small Quaker, 2 Early Grey and 4 Hebrew

night which were 2 Early Grey, 2 Hebrew Character and single
March Moth. (Barry H)
Monday 7th April 2008 Kingsgate
As an April treat (for you not me), I collected a couple of
Phyllonorycter messaniella mines from Holm Oaks at Kingsgate at the
weekend - both emerged this morning. (F Solly)
Sunday 6th April 2008 Beltinge
Night of 5/4 - my visit to the trap this morning was
more to do with seeing if the trap had survived the moderate northerly
breeze and indeed it had. There were no moths in the trap but I located a
Tawny Pinion on the stones nearby. (Barry H)
Sunday 6th April 2008 Late News
4/4/2008. Not much going on at Pegwell, so on the spur
of the moment - without a net, I decided to look for a Tortrix associated
with Gorse at Weatherlees (Thanet's only native Gorse). I
had looked there before later in the season and at other locations but had
failed to find it but was sure that it should be there. After some
considerable time of manic Gorse beating, I disturbed a moth and from its
white underwings was sure that it would be the target species. Fortunately
the blighter was obliging and landed to confirm it as Grapholita
internana. Back home, my optimism at finding it was probably
misplaced. The Kent Checklist (dated 2003) shows it to be the first record
since 1954 and a new vice county record. (F Solly)
Saturday 5th April 2008 Beltinge
Night of 4/4 - again a few bits in the trap which were
5 Early Grey, 4 Common Quaker, 4 Early Thorn, 3
Double-striped Pug, 2 Powdered Quaker, 1 Clouded Drab, 1

so worn it could not be identified. (Barry H)

Wednesday 2nd April 2008 Beltinge
Night of 1/4 - nice to see the start of a new month but
I fear the mothing will remain pretty depressing at least for a couple of
weeks. Not to much in the trap last night just singles of Early Grey,
Common Quaker, Small Quaker, Satellite and 3 Hebrew Character.
(Barry H)
