Thursday 29th September 2005 Pegwell

A brief wander along the cliff-top at Pegwell at lunchtime, no birds to speak of so got distracted by leaf mines. With no effort I noticed the mines of the micro moths - Phyllonorycter tristrigella and Phyllonorycter schreberella on Elms, Phyllonorycter messaniella on Holm Oak, Phyllonorycter leucographella on Hawthorn and Parornix anglicella also on Hawthorn. The Phyllonorycters are stunning looking, though small moths and easy to rear from collecting mined leaves - I would recommend doing so even if you don't want to identify them it is worth seeing them. (F Solly)

Monday 26th September 2005 undisclosed

A brief visit after dark to what I assumed would be the Kentish location (actual location undisclosed) for Fisher's Estuarine Moth revealed about 12 specimens resting on Hog's Fennel in about 1/2 hour. (F Solly)

Wednesday 21st September 2005 Kingsgate & Pegwell

20/9 Walked around Pegwell / Stonelees at dusk for any crepuscular moths, although mild very little flying and all in Stonelees – Common Carpet, Snout, Cochylis hybridella, Mompha epilobiella and the plume Stenoptilia zophodactylus. Night of 20/9. The moth traps since last week’s northerly gale have been very poor both in numbers and species, a hint of migration last night with a Delicate at Kingsgate and the pyralid Palpita vitrealis at Pegwell (F Solly)

Friday 16th September 2005 Deal Kent

Found this Convolvulus Hawk Moth at my front door in Deal this afternoon. Thought you might like a picture. (Martyn W)

Tuesday 13th September 2005 Kingsgate

Evergestis limbata in the Pegwell trap with a couple of Pearly Underwings and Dark Sword-grass and a single Delicate. A Red Underwing provided a splash of colour. Good numbers of L-Albums – 19 and White-points – 14, everything else very predictable. An Orange Sallow was in my bathroom. (F Solly)

Tuesday 13th September 2005 Elvington Garden

A couple of new moths for the Elvington garden, Webb’s Wainscot, Cypress Pug. Also last night I had a Convolvulus Hawk Moth I will get the pic to you soon. (TRP)

Monday 5th September 2005 Kingsgate and Pegwell bay

Night of 4/9/2005 Kingsgate trap was badly affected by the onshore wind and had relatively small numbers of moths and nothing of interest. Pegwell was fairly sheltered and had lots of moths, the ‘best’ of which was a wing off a Dewick’s Plusia – presumably a victim of the local Robin!  Other than that just a few late species – Pretty Chalk Carpet, V Pug, Scarce and Dingy Footman and Catoptria falsella. (F Solly)

Sunday 4th September 2005 Kingsgate Thanet

Night of 2/9/2005.

Slightly less mild than recent nights and a heavy dew. Less moths than of late but still good numbers of the usual common species. The only thing of note was a very pink Vestal. (F Solly)

Thursday 1st September 20005 Kingsgate & Pegwell Bay

Night of 31/8/2005

One of the hottest nights of the year although occasional periods of a gusty breeze. As has been the norm for the last few nights lots of moths in the traps, once again mostly the usual suspects expected on Thanet at this time of year. Little in the way of migrants, a single Small Mottled Willow (the first of the year), 2 Dark Sword-grass and a small increase in Silver Y's.  Of note for Thanet, a Lace Border at Pegwell  - the 3rd Thanet record. Other species of some note from that site were a Hedge Rustic - now uncommon on Thanet, a late or 2nd brood Varied Coronet and 14 White-points the peak of the 2nd brood. (F Solly)
