Saturday 30th July 2005 Photo Update Garden Dumpton Thanet

A few moth throughout the last few nights at Dumpton Thanet, on the night of the 27th July new for the garden, Dusky Hook-tip and Broad- barred White, last night the wind was devastating in my garden and the moths were very poor. (Gadget)

Saturday 30th July 2005 Late News Kingsgate, Pegwell & Ramsgate

Fairly reasonable overnight weather on the nights of 27/7/05 and 28/7/05 however my traps were somewhat disappointing in both numbers and species. The most notable moths were a Small Ranunculus and Tree-lichen Beauty at Kingsgate on 27/7/05 with a different Tree-lichen Beauty on 28/7, a Lesser Cream Wave (very uncommon on Thanet) in my garden on 27/7/05 and by far the best moth, a male Scarce Chocolate-tip at Pegwell on 28/7/05 (F Solly)

Tuesday 26th July 2005 Garden Dumpton Thanet

I had a few bits in the trap the best was a Emperor Dragonfly (Female) photos can be viewed on the Non Avian Page, I also had 1 Popular Hawk Moth,1 Elephant Hawk Moth, 7 Sliver Y's and a Bright Eyed Brown Line, plus all the stuff you would expect this time of year. (Gadget)

Tuesday 26th July 2005 Late news

Night of 24th July 2005 What a day for the car to have it’s MOT!  Went to the Kingsgate trap early on the 25th and got soaked for virtually nothing. Dried off and went to the Pegwell trap – got soaked again, also for virtually nothing. Left work in the afternoon and got soaked again! Couldn’t make up my mind as to whether I could be bothered to do my garden trap, eventually relented at 7.30pm. Much the same as the other traps, however on the penultimate tray there was another Small Ranunculus – this one in good condition. Night of 25th July 2005 Following yesterday’s heavy rain and an overnight northerly wind the Kingsgate trap was even worse – a difficult achievement, Large Yellow Underwing being close to the best moth! The Pegwell trap was a little better, a Reed Dagger is good for Thanet and the first of the 2nd generation of Yellow-barred Brindle. A hint of migration with 2 Dark Sword-grass, 3 Silver Y’s and a Dotted Footman. (F Solly)

Saturday 23rd July 2005 Elvington Garden

New one for Elvington a True Lovers Knot. (TRP)

Saturday 23rd July 2005 Late News

Pics of the Coronet and Small Ranunculus from Pegwell trap on 21/7/2005. The latter in particular is very worn, you may or may not want to use. Migrant Tortrix - Cydia amplana, Kingsgate trap also on 21/7. Night of 22/7, despite being cloudy, a rather poor selection and disappointingly small total of moths in my traps. Most notable was another new moth for Thanet, a Waved Black in the Pegwell trap. In my garden, the attractive and rather local Tortrix - Eucosma pupillana was of note. (F Solly)

Friday 22nd July 2005 Garden Dumpton Thanet

Friday 22nd July 2005 Garden Ramsgate

A few new bits and pieces have turned up this past few nights including July Highflyer and a Fen Wainscot on 19th Oak Eggar on 20th and 3 Plain Pugs, 2 Phoenix, 2 Early Thorn, 2 Latticed Heath, 1 Wormwood, 1 Kent Black Arches plus 1 Twin-spotted Wainscot on the 21st.A few odd micros for the garden have appeared including a wandering Pempelia Genistella and the Tortrix Phalonidia Affinitana. Generally moth numbers have been low these past few nights. (Phil M)

Friday 22nd July 2005 Kingsgate & Pegwell Moth Traps

Night of 21st July 2005 Unexpectedly cloudy and warm last night, caught me out so didn’t get anywhere off Thanet. More moths in the Kingsgate trap than the last few nights, although what is normally my best site continues to have a very disappointing year. The only thing of any note was the migrant Tortrix - Cydia amplana, a species that was first recorded in Kent between Thanet and Dungeness in 2004. The remainder of the haul was very predictable. The Pegwell trap had good variety although the total of moths was less than I was expecting. Highlights from this site were the first Thanet records of Small Ranunculus and Coronet. (F Solly)

Thursday 21st July 2005 Garden Dumpton Thanet

The wind is very strong in my garden at present and the moths have decided to go some were else to play the only new moths were Latticed Heath, Small Fan-foot, Bordered Pug and Ruby Tiger. (Gadget)

National Moth Night 9th July Species List Only

Tuesday 19th July 2005 Late News

Night 15th July 2005 Moth trip at Pegwell List Report

Monday 18th July 2005 Garden Ramsgate Thanet

Night of 17th July 2005  Moth numbers slightly down overnight though I did get yet another Round-winged Muslin. Other bits included - 3 Phoenix, 1 Plain Pug, 1 Leopard Moth, 1 Middle-barred Minor, 1 Poplar Grey and a single Herald. (Phil M)

Monday 18th July 2005 Garden Dumpton Thanet

The past Week, has been a much welcomed improvement, with the number of moths that have arrived in the gardens here in Dumpton, I have recorded, good numbers of the more common species, which included:  3 Buff-Tip, 7 Marbled Green, 2 Oak Eggar, 3 Campion, 2 Sycamore, 5 Lime, 5 Popular, 3 Eyed, 3 Elephant, and 2 small Elephant Hawk Moths, but only recorded 7 Silver Y, By placing a moth trap over in Hawthorn Close, just across the way from me, which much more enclosed and has good number of fir trees around that area  this should be very interesting as to see what different specie I will encounter. (Gadget)

Monday 18th July 2005 Late News

Night of 16th July 2005 Ramsgate garden 56 species of macro moth overnight the pick of which were: 1 Shaded Pug, 1 Bordered Pug, 1 Haworth's Pug, 1 Yarrow Pug, 3 Plain Pug, 1 Common Wave (a new specie for the garden) 1 Eyed Hawk-moth, 1 Poplar Hawk-moth, 1 Shark, 1 Broad-barred White, 1 Cream-bordered Green Pea and 1 Varied Coronet. Nothing too exciting on the micro front. (Phil M)

Sunday 17th July 2005 Late News Kingsgate & Pegwell

Night of 15th July 2005. A very mild night, lots of moths in both the Kingsgate and Pegwell Village traps, although as usual my garden was rubbish! Unfortunately the combined catch was almost wholly comprised of the usual species common to Thanet. The only macro of note was a Tree-lichen Beauty at Kingsgate. 4 Vitula biviella from the same site are also of note but appear this year to be established here. In addition to the above traps, I also trapped on the Reserve at Pegwell Bay and had 120 species of macro moths and around 100 species of micro moths - again nothing of any particular note. (F Solly)

Sunday 17th July 2005 Late News

Night of 15th July 2005 Lots of moths overnight - all of them common species unfortunately. Amongst the 51 species of macro I had: 1 Haworth's Pug, 1 Phoenix, 2 Shaded Broad Bar, 1 Vapour, 65 Lesser Yellow Underwing, 31 Dot Moths, 1 Marbled Green, 1 Mouse and rather amazingly 4 Heralds! Have a couple of Tortrix’s, which may or may not be interesting - I haven’t identified them yet. (Phil M)

Friday 15th July 2005 Garden Ramsgate Thanet

Night of 14th July Lots of moth’s overnight which included 2 new species of macro moth for the garden - namely Foxglove Pug and Round-winged Muslin. The Pug is a good Thanet record but the Muslin is common around habitat in Stonelees. All told I had 58 species of macro and lots of micro species the pick of were: 2 V Pug, Dingy Footman, Eyed Hawk Moth, Epilblema Foenella, 2 Large Tabby, 1 Water Veneer, Udea Prunalis and Euzophera Pinguis. The past couple of nights have turned up nothing much better than Leopard Moth, Toadflax Pug etc and the numbers of moths have certainly been well down on last night. (Phil M)

Friday 15th July 2005 Kingsdown Beach

spent the night 14th July 2005 Mothing on Kingsdown Beach with one 125 MV trap. Surprisingly cool to start with the daytime humidity condensing making it quite damp. Rather poor at this stage, although a slight change in wind direction around 1am increased the temperature and evaporated the dew. Around 96 species of macro moth, nothing of any particular note and for this site rather poor total number of moths – the local Bats did however appreciate my presence. (F Solly)

Thursday 14th July 2005 Garden Dumpton Thanet

Moth numbers continue to improve at the garden trap, yet no real signs of migration - hardly surprising given the wind direction! All the usual species present with a nice Peppered Moth being the highlight. (Dylan)

Wednesday 13th July 2005 Garden Ramsgate Thanet

Recent moths out in the back garden have included: Small Emerald, Toadflax Pug, Grey Pug, Wormwood Pug, Scarce Footman, a few Poplar Hawk-moths, Lime Hawk-moth, Scarce Footman, Middle-barred Minor, Lesser Common Rustic, Square-spot Rustic, Dioryctria Abietella, Epilblema Foenella, Enarmonia Formosana etc. Also last night I caught 3 Broad-barred White's, which is quite good for my garden. (Phil M)

Wednesday 13th July 2005 Garden Dumpton Thanet

Good numbers of common species again last night, amongst which I had this nice fresh specimen of Small Emerald and my first record, for 2005, of Evergistis extimalis. (Dylan)

Tuesday 12th July 2005 Garden Dumpton Thanet

Overnight trapping 11th July 2005 resulted in a garden 1st in the shape of a superb Privet Hawk-moth. Plenty of other common species to accompany it included Scalloped Oak, Least Carpet and Elephant Hawk-moth. If it carries on like this I could get the enthusiasm to turn on the 250w and trap seriously again! (Dylan)

Monday 11th July 2005 Pegwell Bay

Sunday 10th July 2005 National Moth Night 9th July list to follow

The jointly staged event saw the Kent Wildlife Trust and Planetthanet.org enjoy a very successful evening. 34 people attend ended, many children, to witness the emptying of a trap (from Gadget's garden!) and enjoy a guided walk around the Country Park (expertly lead, as usual by Pete Forrest - the reserve warden) On returning to the carpark there was a BBQ (courtesy of Planetthanet.org) and some moth trapping. Everyone seemed to have a good time and, for a change, the moths responded in good numbers. The highlight, for most, was the arrival of a large female Privet Hawk-moth, which finally went into the "Robinson" trap by the warden's office. A full list of moths caught will follow, however, we would like to thank all of those who made the effort to support the event and hope you gained a little  knowledge about these fascinating insects. Please tell your friends and keep an eye on our website, or the Country Park notice board, for details of future moth nights. (Gadget, Dylan & Pete)

Thursday 7th July 2005 Garden Yorkshire

Barnsley South Yorkshire.  My cat caught a moth, which I managed to rescue.  I put it into my hanging basket with the petunias.  Safe I believe.  I think it is an Elephant Hawk Moth.  I am not a lover of any insects but do not like them hurt.  Thought it may be of interest to you. ?

Wednesday 6th July 2005 Pegwell Trap Ramsgate Thanet

Night of 5/7/2005 A showery and generally unremarkable night , a few surprises (as far as Thanet is concerned ) in the Pegwell Moth Trap. A Miller, is I believe new for Thanet, Small Angle Shades is scarce whilst Round-winged Muslin, Pigmy Footman and Cream-bordered Green Pea are all notable. (F Solly)

Wednesday 6th July 2005 Garden Scottish Borders

Hello there, last night we had a very large Elephant Hawk Moth in the conservatory! We live in Peeblesshire in the Scottish Borders, and have never seen anything like it before, Had to get onto the net straight away to see what kind of moth it was. (Judith Linton)

Monday 4th July 2005 Garden Ramsgate Thanet
