Thursday 29th August 2005 Kingsgate, Pegwell & Cliff-top

A mild but clear night. Lots of Moths in the Kingsgate trap all of which were the usual suspects – Yellow Underwings, Setaceous Hebrew Characters, Square-spot Rustics, Vine’s Rustics etc – absolutely nothing of any note and no migrants. The Pegwell trap was also well stocked with perhaps a slightly better selection and some migrants – the highlight of which was a Dark Crimson Underwing. Also present was a Convolvulus Hawk, a Pearly Underwing and 2 Delicates. A wander along the Pegwell Cliff-top at lunchtime produced 2 Hummingbird Hawks and a single Lizard.

Tuesday 23rd August 2005 Late Report

Hummingbird Hawks have been slightly more frequent in the last few days with 4 on 22nd August 2005 and 2 on 23rd August 2005. Having found Cameraria ohridella (Horse Chestnut Leaf-miner) at Kingsgate as new for Thanet at Kingsgate last summer, it is now spreading to other locations. It was only at the original site in the spring of 2005 but I have found the mines at a number of locations on Thanet in the last few days. I moth trapped on the Reserve at Pegwell on 18th August 2005. A mostly clear but warm night, rather unremarkable night with just 63 species of Macro Moth, most of which were the usual suspects. The only moths of note were a Maidens Blush - fairly scarce on Thanet and a Chocolate-tip, this perhaps only being the 2nd Thanet record - however I caught one here last August which may suggest a nearby colony. The Pegwell and Kingsgate Moth traps have been extremely poor, the only moths of any note being a Pinion-streaked Snout at Kingsgate on 16th August 2005 with Restharrow at Pegwell on 17th August 2005 and a Vestal there on 22nd August 2005. (F Solly)

Monday15th August 2005 Garden Ramsgate Thanet

Night of 14th August 2005 garden Ramsgate to light 125MV another good moth overnight a Green Arches, only the second one I’ve ever seen. A real rarity for Thanet anyway. Nothing else of any quality. (Phil M)

Sunday 14th August 2005 Late News

Rather boring in the Moth Traps during the last week - as is usual on Thanet during August. The only thing of any note being a Tree-lichen Beauty at Kingsgate on 10th August 2005 the 4th from this site so far this year. Having declined significantly in the last few years 4 Garden Tigers there on 13th August 2005 is also notable together with a site record of 7 Swallow Prominent on the same night.( F Solly)

Saturday 13th August 2005 Garden Ramsgate Thanet

Night of August 12th 2005 A high quality moth overnight in the garden - a Scarce Chocolate-Tip ... probably the second Thanet record after Franny's specimen from the Pegwell Trap a few weeks back. They have been generally considered to be a scarce migrant away from Dungeness where they have bred - but this is the 4th one to turn up locally in the past few years after Pete Forests one from Ham Fen and the Deal moth - so perhaps there is something going on with them locally? Like Francis' moth - this
one was in very good condition. Other better quality stuff this past week or so has included: Sallow Kitten and Ash Pug on the 4th,Clouded Border on the 7th,Chinese Character on the 8th,Small Scallop and a 'Gammina' Silver Y on the 9th,Twin-spot Carpet and Sharp-Angled Peacock on the10th, Reed Dagger, Dusky Sallow, Maiden's Blush and Twin-Spotted Wainscot on the11th plus a Garden Tiger Moth on the 6th which is worryingly the first one I’ve caught in my garden since 2003.Micro's have been ‘pants’. Best of a bad bunch have been - 2 Microdactyla's, a couple of Ypsolopha
Scabrella's, Agriphila Selasella
and a second Ethmia Bipunctella of 2005 on the 3rd of this month. (Phil M)

Saturday 13th August 2005 Garden Elvington

Friday 5th August 2005 late News

Night of Wednesday 3rd August 2005.  Most notable moth in the Kingsgate trap was a Convolvulus Hawk - the first of the year. There was also the peak count of Magpie Moth - 14. Had a call from a friend (S Mount) during the evening on Thursday 4th August 2005 to say that the largest moth he had ever seen was sitting on the wall of his house. A brief description was sufficient to confirm that it was a Convolvulus Hawk. (F Solly)

Friday 5th August 2005 Garden Ramsgate Thanet

Slightly better overnight with 52 species of macro moth in the garden which included: 1 Wormwood Pug, 1 Ash Pug, 1 Latticed Heath, 1 Dingy Footman, 1 Sallow Kitten, 1 Poplar Hawk-moth, 1 Swallow Prominent, 1 Dusky Sallow, 1 White Point, 1 Broad Barred White, 1 Cream Bordered
Cream Pea
and 3 Straw Dot. (Phil M)

Thursday 4th August 2005 Garden Ramsgate Thanet

Night of August 3rd 2005 A few decent moths in the garden overnight included a real scarcity in the shape of a female Ground Lackey. They do reside down the road at Pegwell so presumably this is where it came from? I wasn’t aware they wandered very far? Other bits included- Cypress Pug, White-spotted Pug, Bordered Pug, Dark-barred Twin-spotted Carpet, Orange Swift, Poplar Hawk-moth, 2 Swallow Prominent, 1 Gold Spot and another Ethmia Bipunctella. (Phil M)
