Thursday 28th April 2005 Late News

Late news from Wednesday 20th April Garden in Canterbury

Whilst doing some fairly major tidying in the garden of the house in Canterbury where I have taken up temporary residence, came across 1 newt sp. (probably Palmate), 1 Slow worm, 1 very rapid vole sp. and 2 Violet Ground Beetles. (Dan Chaney)

Friday 15th April 2005 Garden Dumpton Thanet

Despite the rain today the garden stayed busy, as usual. Two new birds, for this year, were Chaffinch (both female), and one Avocet flew across the fields, between the house and Newland’s Farm, in the direction of Pegwell Bay this afternoon. A most unexpected garden tick! (Gadget)

Tuesday 12th April 2005 Garden in Cambridge

The Photograph of the Grass Snake has been sent to the website from our friend Kevin Webb, who used to work at the SBBOT but has moved on to better opportunities up in Cambridge. (Kevin Webb)

Friday 8th April 2005 Garden Dumpton Thanet

A Song Thrush was feeding around the patio tubs and a Green Woodpecker flew directly overhead as I was replenishing the feeders. This afternoon, a pair of Magpies were sheltering in the hedge and provided another opportunity for a kitchen window picture! (Dylan)

Wednesday 6th April 2005 Garden Dumpton Thanet

A few snippets from the last couple of days. A Green-veined White butterfly was seen on Tuesday and a female Greenfinch visited the seed feeders later the same morning. Conditions deteriorated considerably overnight and strong SW winds have made moth trapping pointless. I got some nice images of Merlin at North Foreland this morning so, when this female Sparrowhawk landed on the garden fence, allowing me ample opportunity to get some pics through the kitchen window and delay the washing-up in the process, I couldn't believe my good fortune! (Dylan)

Tuesday 5th April 2005 Garden News Birchington 1st-5th April

I don’t know if these snippets are of any interest: 2 of the 20 or so Collared Doves which regularly haunt our garden decided to build a nest in our walnut tree; after two days the pair of Woodpigeons which are also regular took exception and noisily evicted them, though they have of course no interest in nesting themselves at the moment. A commotion overhead on Friday proved to be a Sparrowhawk being mobbed by three Ring-necked Parakeets they are noisy enough at the best of times - this was horrendous! Our "White-cheeked" Blackbird is around again for the fourth year some poor pictures attached - I'll try to get some better ones (Bob H)

Monday 4th April 2005 Garden Dumpton Thanet

Very quiet around the feeders this week,  just the usual mix of House Sparrows, Starlings, Feral Pigeons and Collared Doves. Overhead there has been a steady trickle of Meadow Pipits and Linnets with the occasional Sparrowhawk (just to liven the gulls up!). 5 Redwings flew west on Friday and I watched a fantastic piece of Kestrel territorial display (by the Newland's Farm male)  as he flew, very Redshank-esque, on stiff, flick backed wings, over the fields behind our garden. (Dylan)

Monday 4th April 2005 Garden Dumpton Thanet

New for the garden, this year, at 10-00hrs a Blackcap dropped into the apple tree in the centre of the garden. Alas it didn’t stay long enough for me to get a photograph! I also observed 8 or 9 Grey Partridges drop into the field behind my house whilst a Green Woodpecker flew over towards the farm, all within seconds of each other. At 10-30hrs a female Sparrowhawk tried to take a Collared Dove from the top of the cherry tree fortunately, for the Collared Dove, she missed and then flew away over the fields. (Gadget)

Friday1st April 2005 Garden Dumpton Thanet

Doing the moth traps this morning at 06-30hrs 1 Chiffchaff in the hawthorn  along side my house and 1 Great-Spotted Woodpecker in the tree next to it then a Green Woodpecker flew over the field behind my garden, then 3 Blue Tits drop onto the feeders good start to the day (Gadget)
