Wednesday 2nd June 2010   Pegwell Bay

Down just after 10am to a surprise NW wind and broken cloud. Common Swifts were building in numbers (140) over the wheat fields and over the Farm at Cliffsend, 2 Hobbies north towards Newington at 10.45am. Down on to Pegwell for a raptor watch but no joy and gave up just after an hour. With the tide still way out i had a walk round the bushes to kill some time, some counts were taken including; 1 Cetti's Warbler, 4 Sedge Warbler, 6 Reed Warbler, 8 Blackcap, 1 Garden Warbler, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, c20 Whitethroat, 3 Chiffchaff, 3 Willow Warbler, 14 Magpie, 10 Rooks but still no Turtle Doves! Overhead today 60 Common Swifts north, 45 Swallow north and 17 House Martin north. On the incoming tide, 107 Oystercatcher, 17 Ringed Plover, 3 Grey Plover, 5 Knot, 15 Dunlin, 3 Bar-tailed Godwit, 28 Curlew, 13 Black-headed Gull, 1 Common Gull, 116 Herring Gulls, 1 2s Yellow-legged Gull and 3 Sandwich Tern. Tuesday 1st June 2010  Cliffsend, Pegwell

A nose around the cliff-top fields, taking in behind the Shell and the hover-pad before the onset of the forecast rain band. As you would expect at this time of year but still nice to be out. Most notable thing this morning was a first summer Caspian Gull just off the hover-pad at 10.10, then flew out to the tide line, my first June record. Interesting there's been 2 1s Caspar's at Dungeness recently. Little else, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Reed Warbler (Hover-pad), Whitethroat, Blackcap etc. A male Wheatear around the reservoir, Yellow Wagtail and c15 Swallows, and 36 Common Swifts over the fields with the cloud cover, 2 Green Woodpeckers and 3 Grey Partridges in the paddocks together with a mob of noisy young Starlings. Looking forward to the sun in the coming days. (Craig Sammels)
